Sarah Palin Opens A Can Of Alaskan Whoop-Ass On Obama And Democrats-But What Does She Drive?
You'd have be deaf or dead to have not heard the shots fired last night by Vice-Presidential candidate and Governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin, during her speech at the Republican National Convention.

No matter WHAT your political beliefs are, NOBODY can argue she did an
unbelievable job last night under the kind of pressure, that very few people on this planet will EVER be under.

The Spies say we are proud to be part of a country with tremendously gifted people like Sarah Palin and Barack Obama.

Awesomely proud.

But the question WE want answered is what kind of car or cars does Sarah drive?

Kyle Busch, author of the book "Drive the Best for the Price” and National Automotive Examiner for the San Francisco Examiner online edition told the autochannel that shedrives a Suburban and a VW Jetta Diesel.

One more thing to like about her, she's a diesel girl!

I'm ashamed to say I participate in this board when all of you are equating things like keeping a child from getting pregnant to the ability (or lack therof) to govern our country. Maybe we need a socialist president and agenda-- is that what you guys want??? As soon as that happens, try having the FREEDOM and ability (let alone the disposable income that will vanish to taxes) to OWN & DRIVE THE CARS WE ALL CARE SO MUCH ABOUT!!!!! Look at Denmark, average trade cycle there for car ownership is almost 8 years, whereas here in the US its still less than 3 years. SOCIALISM = BAD THINGS FOR THE US.

LexSucks, this election has nothing to do with a teen girl with a normal sex drive -- the only reason she became pregnant is because of silly politicians like her mother who are against sex education in schools and probably against birth control in general. I can't believe that there are so many gullible people who have been brainwashed by the religious right into believing that abstinence is realistic. I guess I should not be too surprised since these dupes also believe that the earth is only 6,000 years old.

What would you say to a person who had bad parents turning out "right"? Last time I checked, Sen. Obama was raised by his grandparents because his parents were AWOL/dysfunctional/whatever. Because his parents may have made bad decisions are we supposed to not trust him? It's the same sort of argument you're making in my opinion. And it doesn't hold water. We need to look at these people for their records- that is what shows what they are really about. Candidates can and do say all kinds of things in campains, rarely do the things they promise. I contend to you- what has Sen. Obama promised and delivered on through his career? Likewise what has Sen. McCain promised and delivered on in his career? And Gov. Palin? I look at facts and records- promises from politicians mean less than the paper they are printed on.

Lexsux... Bush has been running (or supposedly running) this country now for 8 years and his daughters were uncontrollable at one point too! You obviously do not have children, they will do what they want when they are teens, I was one once and no power or authority my Air Force father could give me would stop me from doing what I wanted...call that the rise of an American spirit. It is that independent thought that has made this country what it is. I am not all about McCain or Obama, but can either of them run it, why not? Bush was elected twice and I disliked him as governor of Texas, did a lousy job in my opinion (family lives out there and didn't like him either)but our country still moves forward. I think Palin seems alright... she has as much experience as Baby Bush...he had no foreign experience and I am sure he called Daddy constantly for aid and answers to many of his questions....

Ok MBKing, educate us on exactly what Obama is going to do besides raise taxes and bring us even more babysitting from the Federal Gov't? And the last time I checked the Dems have been controlling Congress since 2006. Since then gas prices have gone through the roof and the economy has sputtered. How is that Bush's fault? Heck, I'll even give you that it's not necessarily Congress's/Dems fault either, just an economic cycle, but all this back and forth is ridiculous and you certainly aren't going to fix an economy or the energy problem with higher taxes and more gov't regulation, the exact prescription the Dems have been proposing for every economic downturn for almost the last 75 years.

And I can sure as hell tell you I'm better off than I was 8 years ago, but I am now considered "rich" according to the Dems and they had nothing to do with my going to school, working hard, and making some good choices. In fact, Bush didn't either. I wish people would quit thinking the gov't is their "parent" to whine to at every problem and "hope" they fix it.

You know, people are constantly whining about this, but it needs to be done. If our tremendous and sufficiently terrifying debt continues to increase, we will doubtless be living a very different life in this country by the middle of the century. We may face a crappy immediate future in order to fix it, but IMO that's far better than sitting on it and letting it destroy our country's actual future.

"Members, officers and employees of the House and the Senate have since 1995 [S.Res. 158, 104thCong. (July 28, 1995]; H.Res. 250, 104thCong. The 2007 changes implemented further restrictions on the interaction of registered lobbyists or their clients with Members and staff of Congress, particularly with reference to de minimis gifts (gifts under $50)."

Your statement about cars at least is inaccurate.

So, I looked up the latter, erm, the sponsor and list of co-sponsors:

Sen Reid, Harry [NV]
Sen Bennett, Robert F. [UT] - 1/4/2007
Sen Brown, Sherrod [OH] - 1/8/2007

Sen Schumer, Charles E. [NY] - 1/4/2007
Sen Stabenow, Debbie [MI] - 1/4/2007

Library of Congress identified two similar bills, S.192, and S.230. Co-sponsor of the latter: Sen Obama, Barack [IL] - 1/9/2007. But this is what is said for its status: Referred to Senate committee. Status: Read twice and referred to the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.

As an interesting note, S.192's major sponsor: Sen McCain, John [AZ] (introduced 1/4/2007)

I think she did a very good job of delivering a speech writers very well written speech that didn't really say anything. Her speech said nothing about why she'd be a good vice president. It was full of punch lines that go against what the party said they would do. For McCain to be running for the country and to be such a cross aisle co-operator her speech was quite dirty. None of the real campaign issues were touched. She will prove to have more skeletons in her closet and in the end will end up costing McCain the election.

The U.S. is already number one militarily but the current administration has squandered America's moral currency through bad strategies and questionable diplomacy.

You don't know really know politics if you are looking for policy direction VP or VP candidates; that's for the presidents/presidential candidates debate. VPs are always responsible for dishing out the dirty and calling the other party out. Punclines and one-liners are what being a VP candidate are all about!! Biden is no different. They sling the mud so the ticket leads can claim clean hands. Always has been; always will be. Give Palin props -- she can dish it as well as she takes it. She didn't buckle, sweat, wince, or whine last night. And that was a huge, national stage. That girl rocks. She is the future of the GOP. Even if McCain doesn't win, she's a part of the American conscious now. Just like Obama's 2004 speech. Face it, she is here to stay. It's funny... I don't recall anyone saying what a great job Obama's speech writer did during the DNC. I'll keep looking though.

Seems clear to me after seeing Obamas "performance" at Saddleback shows that he needs the speech writer. He's great at expressing others ideas.

As far as Sarah Palin, I understand that her teleprompter was not working properly, and the second half of the speech was part from memory and part ad lib. Like her politics or don't- in that envoronment, under that pressure... that was impressive.

Enough of this political tripe! This is an auto enthusiast website, not Crossfire!

Back to things automotive. I can forgive her for driving a Suburban because she lives in Alaska (lots of snow), hunts/fishes/camps (lots of off-road driving), and has a large family. People like that have very good reasons for driving huge gas-guzzling SUVs. That Suburban might also do double duty as the governor's limo.

She probably uses the fuel-efficient Jetta TDI wagon for commuting and running errands. (I could say that diesels have small carbon footprints as well, but I'm skeptical about anthropogenic global warning theories.) Sounds like a sensible lady when it comes to choosing cars.

I can’t wait for the debates (which will be the deciding factor for me), especially when they discuss their energy policies. While Obama and McCain have similar views on energy policies, they differ a lot on their methods. Hopefully, the debates will clear up both of their nebulous stances on their methods. Impressively, Palin is the only one of the four who has actually executed on alternative energy resources instead of just talking about it, and she drives a diesel! Is the Suburban a diesel, also?

I have more faith in Obamas energy plan for wind farms and electric cars. No more 18 BILLION dollar oil subsidies. Subsidies instead the 200 million dollar battery and electric car startups. Move automitive history and the nations auto industry forward. It would take 10 years to see 1% of relief from new drilling. In that time wind farms would pay for themselfves. Compared to oil wind and solar is perpetual energy (AbstractLogic).

Car people consider this. What will you be driving in 8 years and how will it be powered if one party or the other is elected. LOL I can hear the sarcasm already...

Thank you,

"H.R. 5351- This bill would repeal roughly $18 billion in manufacturing tax credits for oil and gas companies while extending and increasing tax credits for a wide range of renewable energy programs."

The reason I asked for clarification is that I often see the word "subsidy" misused in application to some programs. The royalty relief program is not a subsidy for example. The royalty relief program was instituted by the MMS under Clinton (those who denigrate it seem to think Bush instituted it) in order to persuade corporations to bid for high-risk leases in the Gulf of Mexico. The GOM is not only capital intensive but inherenly high-risk, which is reflected in the ROR there. Most businesses have a ROR for around 13%, GOM projects have ROR of just 6%. The reason that it isn't a subsidy is that the government hasn't waived any income. Without the program the leases theoretically would have generated no income for the government, yet with the program the government not only gets the bid, but also, at least more recently, some income at a later date and then for the perpetuity of the well(s) if they are productive.

It would be rational to state that the no income statement is rather theoretical given that the rise in oil prices should cause some of those leases to become more attractive, however, it needs to be remembered that oil companies do not invest in short-term projects, nor do they modify their economics to reflect spot prices. They are far more careful than that, as they learned their lesson in the 80's.

Its not about securing a supply of oil, its about CONTROLLING the supply of oil. Go an read the "Project for a New American Century" documents that were published in the late 1990's. The USA wants to be able to control the supply of oil to China and India and others. (The PNAC also advocated war against Iraq for the purpose of reshaping the middle east).

If it bankrupts this country they are hell bent on it. Not for your or my benefit, its for the big oil corporations and the "Empire". Dont forget where these guys running the show came from, the Oil business. Thats where they will be going back after this next election. They will be very, very rich, thanks to......oh yes, thanks to themselves.

Cheney has just visited 3 countries that would seem to have nothing to do with the USA:- Georgia, Ukraine and Azerbaijan. They all have one thing in common, a new gas pipline.

The majority of Ukrainians do not want to join Nato, their president has about a 10% approval ratings and the government just voted NOT to condem Russia for its actions in Georgia.

Remember the USA does not get much of its oil from this region, but it wants to CONTROL this through US oil companies.

GET REAL none of this is about democracy.

That reference to creationism came up in a debate during her gubernatorial campaign.

After the debate she further elaborated with the following statement:

In an interview Thursday, Palin said she meant only to say that discussion of alternative views should be allowed to arise in Alaska classrooms:

“I don’t think there should be a prohibition against debate if it comes up in class. It doesn’t have to be part of the curriculum.”

She added that, if elected, she would not push the state Board of Education to add such creation-based alternatives to the state’s required curriculum.

Members of the state school board, which sets minimum requirements, are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Legislature.

“I won’t have religion as a litmus test, or anybody’s personal opinion on evolution or creationism,” Palin said.

Her speech was entertaining, but the truth is she bounces the needle on the right side of the spectrum to hard. Here are some reasons to question why you would want here in the #2 seat:
* Palin recently said that the war in Iraq is "God's task." She's even admitted she hasn't thought about the war much—just last year she was quoted saying, "I've been so focused on state government, I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq."
* Palin has actively sought the support of the fringe Alaska Independence Party. Six months ago, Palin told members of the group—who advocate for a vote on secession from the union—to "keep up the good work" and "wished the party luck on what she called its 'inspiring convention.'"
* Palin wants to teach creationism in public schools. She hasn't made clear whether she thinks evolution is a fact.
* Palin doesn't believe that humans contribute to global warming. Speaking about climate change, she said, "I'm not one though who would attribute it to being manmade."
* Palin has close ties to Big Oil. Her inauguration was even sponsored by BP.
* Palin is extremely anti-choice. She doesn't even support abortion in the case of rape or incest.
* Palin opposes comprehensive sex-ed in public schools. She's said she will only support abstinence-only approaches. (this could have helped in her house!!)
* As mayor, Palin tried to ban books from the library. Palin asked the library how she might go about banning books because some had inappropriate language in them—shocking the librarian, Mary Ellen Baker. According to Time, "news reports from the time show that Palin had threatened to fire Baker for not giving "full support" to the mayor."
* She DID support the Bridge to Nowhere (before she opposed it). Palin claimed that she said "thanks, but no thanks" to the infamous Bridge to Nowhere. But in 2006, Palin supported the project repeatedly, saying that Alaska should take advantage of earmarks "while our congressional delegation is in a strong position to assist."

You hear ALL this talk about those who wont vote for him because of his skin color, but whats rarely mentioned is that there are even more who will because of it (he has over 90% of the African American vote (reported on CNN)

Then you hear about racism in America??? That really gets to me, it seems to be the scapegoat for those who victimize themselves. Why doesnt the media say that there is something racial about him having that extravagantly high percentage of the black vote? I surely think there is. VERY SAD

McCain = same or lower taxes, strong military, less government

Think about it, you are on the board of directors of a fortune 100 company and you are hiring a CEO and you get 2 applications. The resumes do not indicate what political party or skin color the applicants are. Which person would you hire out of the 2? *Numerous lines in Gov. Sarah Palin's speech at the GOP convention Wednesday night have been exposed as lies by various media outlets. But one of her quips struck a nerve that has galvanized grassroots organizations across the country to respond en masse.

During the convention on Wednesday, the former mayor of Wasilla (population 7,000) took a jab at Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama with the line: “I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a community organizer, except that you have actual responsibilities.”

Her sentiments were reinforced in two earlier speeches on the convention floor Wednesday in St. Paul.

• Former Governor George Pataki said: “[Barack Obama] was a community organizer. What in God’s name is a community organizer? I don’t even know if that’s a job.”

• Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani said: “On the other hand, you have a resume from a gifted man with an Ivy League education. He worked as a community organizer. What? [Laughter]…I said, OK, OK, maybe this is the first problem on the resume.”

In the wee hours of the following morning, Obama's campaign sent an e-mail to supporters objecting – among other things – to the attacks against community organizers. It read:

Let's clarify something for them right now.

Community organizing is how ordinary people respond to out-of-touch politicians and their failed policies.

And it's no surprise that, after eight years of George Bush, millions of people have found that by coming together in their local communities they can change the course of history. That promise is what our campaign has been about from the beginning.

Throughout our history, ordinary people have made good on America's promise by organizing for change from the bottom up. Community organizing is the foundation of the civil rights movement, the women's suffrage movement, labor rights, and the 40-hour workweek. And it's happening today in church basements and community centers and living rooms across America.

Also on Thursday, a coalition of community organizers across the country launched the Web site OrganizersFightBack. (http://organizersfightback.wordpress.com) to demand an apology from Gov. Palin and to "defend their work organizing Americans who have been left behind by unemployment, lack of health insurance and the national housing crisis."

• “Community organizers work in neighborhoods that have been hit hardest by the failing economy,” said John Raskin, founder of Community Organizers of America and a community organizer on the West Side of Manhattan. “The last thing we need is for Republican officials to mock us on television when we’re trying to rebuild the neighborhoods they have destroyed. Maybe if everyone had more houses than they can count, we wouldn’t need community organizers. But I work with people who are getting evicted from their only home. If John McCain and the Republicans understood that, mayb

Try to dress it up as much as you want, but there is no There - There ,when it comes to B.O.s resume and any substance of accomplishment. He is running on thin air and gossamer threads of speeches and prose.

I am astonished that so many people are drinking the Koolaide of this gifted but very inexperienced politician whose entire adult life has been "designed" to run for office.

No executive experience of ANY kind, afraid to take positions while State Senator so he would not have to go ON record-so he votes "present". And claims to have the judgment necessary when he has shown continuously a lack of it (whether in his choice of personal/professional relations or in his weak responses to national security issues.)

Forget the race issue- Obama is to green to be hired for anything more than a middle management position at a Fortune 500 company.

If he loses this election it will be because of his lack of resume and experience, as it should be. He is not ready and people need to wake up and stop making him something he isn't - especially now.

I though about it for awhile (after reading some replies) and came to the conclusion that her daughter getting knocked up shouldn't effect her ability to do her job. But that just Palin. I've personally have seen a teenage pregnancy effect not only the grandmother’s performance at her job but her whole entire life.

Thank you for re-stating this and clarifying.

More people sould be able to admit something when they realize what they said or thought was wrong/not correct. Look at Obama for example- he lost a lot of people's respect by refusing to admit he was wrong about voting for the surge. O'Reilly can be a blabbermouth sometimes, but it seemed pretty clear to me in his Obama interview that Sen. Obama is not capable of admitting he was wrong. He came pretty close to admitting it, but wouldn't go all the way. For the record, I agree with O'Reilly on this one- we shouldn't have gone to war in the first place in Iraq, but not voting for the surge and standing by that decision just doesn't make sense. The surge worked- Obama even admitted that.

ANYWAYS..... I think it's about time for this thread to die. 001- have you ever closed a thread to extra replies? This one has to be one of the biggest/longest ones I've seen here since I started participating over a year ago. I think most would agree with me that all sides of this thing have been aired one way or another.

Do you know how Sarah Palin takes care of her young kids while she is Vice President of the USA?

She hires a nanny just like Alice in the Brady Bunch.

Got it?

Why is the experience factor so important? If you are hiring a driver and one with a ton of experience says I will drive us off the cliff we have been heading for over the last 8 years and the other says I will stop the car turn it around and get it back on the road... who do you hire?

Huu. "turn America into a bitch" ?????

The Republicans did this without any help. Just a different sort of bitch.

Open your eyes, America is an Empire with over 700 military bases around the world (why the hell are they still in Germany and Japan?). Rome went bust because they overstretched themselves and what little democracy Rome had was swept away, guess what history repeats itelf. McPain will continue the same disastrous policies we have been following for the last 8 years.

If you are a business owner or a farmer and expect your Corporate Welfare Check or Farm subsidy check, then the republicans are your ticket,

If you loose your manufacturing Job and need unemployment, or you live in crime and poverty in the city then the Democrats are your ticket.

The Farmers and Corporate America think of the Working Middle Class, or the poverty city dwellers as a different group of Americans. People who don’t matter because they live far far away from the peaceful rural areas, or the luxury gated communities.
When the cities fall into poverty and crime, we all suffer. American cities are becoming third world nations and war-zones. Every night I keep hearing on the news of people being shot, and killed, car jacking, hold-ups and so on. These occurrences are on a step rise. This is a barometer of how our nation is really doing. Top it off with a war, historic record highs for bankruptcies, home foreclosures, high inflation, high unemployment, and an Energy crisis, and you can see how far we have come in eight years.

The difference today, is that inflation and unemployment gets swept under the rug, and people are somewhat insulated because of the availability of credit.

If we had these same factors in the 1970s, we would have surely been doomed as credit wasn’t as widely available then. Nowadays, we postpone the inevitable by barrowing against barrowed time.

The Republican National Convention seemed like a tale out of A Tale of Two Cities, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”

It was an utter pep-rally. People patting their selves on the back. I admit Sara Palin had a nice speech, but it lacked sustenance. Sure she gave a powerful and clear speech, I don’t deny that, but she was telling people what they want to hear, and that is always music to your ears.

Listen to that speech, and then drive into the City of Niagara Falls in broad daylight. Look at the thousands of homeless people wandering the streets, pushing carts. City blocks of vacant lots where houses once stood, all burned to the ground, the remaining ones condemned to crack houses, decaying streets riddle with holes. It looks worse than Beruit Lebonon. It is enough to turn your stomach and realize we are headed for tough times indeed. I guess McCain was right, Change is coming. The Winds of Change.

Last night a young lady was shot in the gut while driving her car, she didn’t make it, last week a 14 year old girl was gunned down, last month a cabby was shot in the head during a hold-up. I guess the republican’s War on Drugs that we spent billions on was yet another failed war.

Well, I will admit this, when reagan took office, my parents were lifted from just above the poverty line to building a new house and getting a motguage for it approved, while Regan was still in office. I will give the Republicans that. And Clinton was the only one to elliminate the deficit and build a surplus, which is a very sound thing to do, but even though the market soared under Clinton, and we suposedly had a great economy during the Clinton years, my wages were stagnant during the Clinton Era, and I seemed to be threatened on all fronts for being a white guy. And, I wasn't able to do the thing my parents did during Reagan. So I think Clintons economy was good for the soundness of our economy, but people just limped along.

But I really don't like how powerful the Republicans have become. Dictating wars, cheering wars on as if the people have no say in any of this anymore. If your not willing to follow the warriors into battle, your not American. Well I don't belive in going to War so Corporate America can secure thier over seas investments. I don't like the propaganga coming from the Republicans, and a president tat dictates to you how it is going to be. The president works for the people. When Jimmy Carter faced crisis, he faced the people and explained thing and de-briefed us as if we were the boss, no the tables have surely turned.

I'm a registered Republican, but I will be voting Obama, not because I now belive in the Democrats, but because we need a regime change, before the Henchmen get to be too powerful.

I don't like all the protectionist policies of the democrats, but it is better than the alternative.

The Republicans want to take away Unemployment at a time when Unemployment rate is nearly 6 percent. They want to Undo all the things that gave working people a chance. These were the changes that the New Deal brought us after the Great Depression. Now, when history is about to repeat itself, we are going to remove Social Security and Unemployment? and we don't even have healthcare yet.

We have seen the devastation that the Free-Market has brought to the Motguage Industry and Healthcare industries. These Industries need to be regulated and instep with inflation and peoples incomes. The Republicans will take this away and laugh about it.

I just want to point this out because it is an important distinction- when we talk about "reserves" we are NOT talking about the resource base.

That word has a very specific meaning. Reserves are the amount of the product availible ECONOMICALLY to the market. Meaning reserves are a function of price AND technology. Anyone who has ever taking a natural resource economics class will tell you that technology is not only not trivial it has won the race with depletion for the past 150 years.

The Green River Formation in Colorado, Utah and Whyoming contains approximatly 1.5 trillion barrels of oil- more oil than there is in all of the Middle East COMBINED. In fact this formation contains 62% of all oil shale on earth. These are not, or at least not yet, reserves because the technology does not yet exist to produce it cheaply and cleanly. Due to the fact that is is oil shale it is diffucult to extract. Presently the estimate for total recoverable is 800 billion barrels- still more equivalent oil volume than is in the Middle East.

...one more thing, that 1.5 trillion bbl estimate is the conservative estimate- some go as high as 2.6 trillion bbl.

The Mid-East has been a target for many Decades now. Because it is a strategic region. The country that controls the mid-east controls the world because Wars require Oil. Wars consume vast amounts of energy. Warships burn Diesel not by the Gallon, but by the Ton. The US and Russia have been eying the mid-east for years, caling eachother's bluff as to who would be bold enough to invade.

I admit, there were plentiful mistakes during the Clinton Administration.

I saw the Dot com collapse coming in July befor the crisi hit in the fall. I was amazed at how Alan Greenspan simply didn't see this coming, but a common person like myself knew it was coming.

My friends would ask eachother, How can a company that is only a few moths old have a Market capitalization greater than Ford Motor and Genearl Motors combined?

In some of the stocks I owned, We saw the Off the "Balance Sheet Accounting" nonsense happening and no one said anything about it. Alan Greenspan saying incoherent things like "Inconspicious Consumption" and that other phrase I ca't recall right now, probably because it was too ridiculous to be worth remembering.

I love how all thes ivy-Lege people with supposedly a ton of experience be so inept and show up for work just to collect a paycheck.

Alan Greenspan waltzed off into the sunset without a care in the world even though he left a wake of distruction behind him. He only proved utter irresponsibility to everthing.

I love how easily Americans buy into an idea.

Palin also said "God wants our me to go to War" so we should rally our support around what god wants.

I have a lot of trouble with this concept.

First, Killing is a sin. I accept going to war and killing is sometimes necessary, but we do so for the good of the people, but when we go to War, we turn away from god, because we no longer have viable resons to avoid war.

We know God's rules, we only break them when we have exhausted all means of diplomacy with the people of the earth.

Invading other countries and angrying half the world against our intents is not my idea of a worthy cause.

I'm not major religous, but I really hate when Born Agains mix religion with politics and use religion to Promote War, The Free Market, profits and Extreme Capitalism. i like Cpatilism, just not Capatilism at any price, and taking away peoples homes for the sake of market forces.
