Porsche 911 Turbo V Nissan GT-R - Fifth Gear By Senna

If I had to choose between the two, I would go with the 911 Turbo. The GT-R is a beast and an amazing value, but I just love the Porsche because it is a timeless car.

Say we're biased all you want but the fact of the matter is, people who seek the pure driving experience will go with a 911 not a GT-R. In this regard, those numbers don't mean squat. The GT-R is too much like a game whereas the Porsche requires better skills to drive.

I like the GT-R though and certainly respect it. But some cheap typical Nissan plastic bits and an almost artificial experience is what detaches me from the expensive Nissan.

I don't think the Porsche is timeless, its' only timeless for people who believe it is timeless.

I actually believe this design is running OUT OF TIME it will have to change sooner or later especially when the old people who buy this car start to die off.

Many are just getting tired of the same old design. Its like having sex with your wife at first its all great but then you kinda get tired of looking and tasting the same old thing all the time and you want something new & fresh.

The most famous auto journalist jeremy clarkson placed this legend air-cooled 911 placed on 98th best car in their video - top 100 cars with is not good , but placed newer , water cooled porsche 911 on 2nd place . Rear air-cooled engine porsche concept was in fact derived from vw beatle and vw beatle concept was derived from Tatra cars e.g. tatra T97 .

But anyway, I have to agree with those that would buy the GT-R over the Turbo. If you're a lame fanboy and just want a Porsche for the name, don't waste the cash and buy a plain Carrera S. You'll have to spend the difference to keep your girlfriend happy.

If I couldn't have the Porsche, I'd rather have the Corvette than the GTR.

I'm not really partial to the 911T, but I don't know how you could say its running out of time. It should have run out of time 30 years ago but its still going. Its a great car and it'll most probably be around for another 30 years. But for the money, either a Z06, Aston Martin, or Maserati over either of these.

I used to be a huuuuge 911 fan but let's face it, the concept of the 911 is dated. The 911 is really an advanced version of the original VW bug. Porsche has a done a great job evolving this beast but it still doesn't have a 50-50 balance. Sure, having a heavy tail is great for breaking but it's still likes to fish tail. The 911 Turbo simply looks and feels old next to the GT-R. This gap will only increase as time goes on. My nod goes to the GT-R.

The 911 form factor is also excellent at laying down power out of corners. Do watch any racing? The "dated" 911 concept wins races every weekend. Great braking and great acceleration makes for a compelling package, it simply takes a special skill set to drive properly.

When it comes to performance the GTR has proven itself over and over again against the 911T. Sure, maybe the Porsche has one more cow's worth of leather wrapped inside and makes it look a bit fancier, but Nissan's technology is at the time one step ahead of the German's king. I like the 911, but I don't love the looks of it because it has reached its time for change.
Since the early 90s when the R33 was introduced, Nissan and Porsche have jabbed back and forth to see who would achieve the best numbers (and yes, that includes times at the Ring), and although in the past six years or so Porsche has had the throne, the last few months have been war between the two, and finally we have a new king.
Godzilla came back, destroyed everything in its past, redefined the words 'Super Car' and made exotics look like everyday rich grandmother cruisers.

I really can't see how anyone who like the past Nissan supercars can be so in love with this version. It's a 4000 lb luxury barge with a great engine and transmission. I'd call it a middle class grandmothers cruiser

It is time for Porsche to make some changes. It's still a great vehicle, but it's just not THAT great anymore. They haven't had a reason in the past to really keep pushing the envelope, so I understand the minor changes. However, take a look at this segment now...the GT-R, R8, Aston, Maserati...etc. Don't sit back and watch everyone pass you by like GM did. I know you have the name, cache, blah blah, but the market will change and so will your customers...and they don't care. They are speed and technology driven.

the guy in the beggining didnt say half the cost, or half the price he said "half the value" and well, i kind of agree with him. in spite of the GTR being well faster in tests and comparisons i still prefer the 911 cause its just damn beautiful

TurboSpyder , keep in mind that porsche has won many races with their MID-engine racing cars not that production based REAR-engine cars .

From where you have that information that 911-based race cars have won more races than any other production-based race cars , or did you calculate this yourself ?

there's a video already posted with a GTR racing the new '09 997 C2S (non-turbo) equipped with the DFI engine and PDK. The non-turbo Porsche easily out accelerated the GTR. Can only imagine how fast the new turbo will be in '10.

Porsche dual-clutch gearbox is good example how racing cars are sometimes disconnected from production cars . Porsche did it in 80`s for racing cars but quickly abandoned . But for production sports cars ( and no sports ) dual-clutch is very good .

Senna made comment on the gearchange in the Nissan being better than the Porsche, with new dual clutch transmission you can easily see the Porsche clawing back the 1/2 second it gave up to the Nissan in this test.

I parked next to a GT-R at the supermarket last week, Black one, I have to say its not a good looking car. Whatever it road going qualities it styling looks a bit comic book.

The price on the GTR is way to expensive and the car itself is over-rated. Down here in Hawaii I heard at New City Nissan, only two people are allowed to drive that thing: One Sales and One tech. The rest of the commoners are prohibited from driving it.

GTR beats on the 911 in so many ways it's not even funny anymore.

why are there so many 911 haters out there? I think its a working formula, so porsche does not want to change it. I mean, if it didnt work, I don't think that they would become one of the most profitable auto company presently.

Either way, I respect the GT-R, but I go with the 911 Turbo.

Anyways, theres something with a Porsche that doesnt get old, and for those who owns one, they know, and for those who don't, they havent a clue about that feeling. Call it being a badgewhore, call it being bias, call it being a fanboi, but until you own a 911, you will not know the feeling...

Sit and drive both vehicles back to back and you will feel and see the difference.

Same thing occured with the G35 and 330i when the G first came out, yeah it was faster(before the N54), and cheaper, but do you honestly believe the G was a better all around car? Come on.

1/2 a second when you have a computer controlled DCT vs a manual transmission?

Lets have a fair comparison, 2 similarly configured vehicles.

The driver even said the shifts are faster then he could ever do with a manual, not to mention it's a similar tranny to what he races with.

In theory the 911 Turbo already has an advantage in that it's not lugging around enough space for 4 adults. The rear grocery ledge in the 911 does not count as seats. Plus, the GT-R has a full trunk --> The 911 has the carry on size trunk under the hood. Even with all this, the GT-R still manages to beat the the 911 Turbo. The PDK challenge would be the better comparison but I bet the lack of weight balance will still throw the 911 off. I don't hate the 911, its just just a dated idea of a sports car. Just wait till the GT-R V-Spec comes out, it will leave the PDK 911 Turbo in its wake. Love for 911 for its style, love the GT-R for its performance. Its your choice.
