Audi Advertisements Claim New A4 Is The Fastest Car In Its Segment. Do YOU Believe That?
As a highly trained Agent here at AutoSpies.com, part of my extensive training includes being able to sort out fact from fiction when it comes to manufacturers claims regarding their offerings in the marketplace.

Call it a truth detector, my training has taught me to be able to sniff out a rat, and this week I think I caught a big one.

Or did I?

To be honest with you, I am not sure.  I think I have, but the facts used in making my determination are a little skewed, and as such I will present the facts to you, and perhaps together we can come together to determine the truth.

On trial, the 2009 Audi A4 3.2 Quattro.  In an effort to call attention upon itself, it seems to have ruffled the feathers of their cross town German rival BMW by claiming that they are now the fastest car in the segment, a role currently occupied by the BMW 3-Series.

BMW takes the sports sedan market pretty serious.  It is a market they created, and one that with each new generation of the 3-Series makes major advances that keeps competitors chasing.  And chase they have, most have simply fallen by the wayside during the years however some strong efforts have been brought to market.

The Lexus IS 250/350 Mercedes-Benz C300 / C350 Sport Sedan, and of course the Audi A4.  I know what you are thinking.  So what, the Audi A4 has challenged the establishment and for the most part I would agree with you, however it is the method Audi used in challenging the market segment.

Boldly.

Brazenly.

Brashly.

Ballsy.

Don't believe me, watch the commercial in question.

This is an in your face attempt to not only get your attention, but hopefully sway you to come test drive the new 2009 Audi A4.

Audi claims that the new A4 3.2 Quattro is the fastest car in the segment.

But I don’t think it is.

Fast is a quantitative value, be it 0-60 times or ¼-mile times, perhaps even top speed, fast is something that can be tested across a range of vehicles using methods that can be repeated consistently to insure accuracy and fairness.

So is the Audi A4 the fastest car in the segment?

Let’s look at the facts by looking at a benchmark.  In this case lets use the 0-60 times as reported by C&D magazine for reference.

The 2009 Audi A4 3.2 Quattro has a reported 0-60 time of 5.7 seconds.  No testing has yet to be completed on the 2.0 A4, so the time for the 3.2 is the only number we will use.

The 2008 BMW 328i has a 0-60 time of 6.1 seconds, however the 335i gets to 60 in a very quick 4.8 seconds.  In the commercial a 328i is used, but I am not sure that using the 328i is fair, but I will address that a little bit later.

The Lexus IS is also featured in the commercial but has two different engine options, a 2.5 and a 3.5 six-cylinder.  It is impossible to tell which Lexus is used in the commercial, however C&D reports a 0-60 time of 5.1 seconds for the IS350, so I think it would be safe to assume the IS250 is the car in the commercial, and based on C&D testing, the IS250 makes it to 60 in 7.1 seconds.

Mercedes-Benz is also featured in the commercial, however the C300 Luxury is the model used which again is the smaller of the two engines available.  With a 0-60 time of 7.3 seconds, the A4 is certainly faster than the MB.

And herein lies the biggest problem with the commercial.  If you compare the BIGGER engine A4 3.2 Quattro against the SMALLER engine BMW 328i, Lexus IS250 and Mercedes-Benz C300, yes, the Audi certainly is the fastest car in the segment.

But that is not a fair test.

The Audi A4 3.2 Quattro starts at a base price of $39,000.  The BMW 328i starts at $33,525 and the Mercedes-Benz C300 and Lexus IS250 all start in the low $30k’s.  The forthcoming Audi A4 2.0 will certainly be cheaper, but the A4 3.2 is aimed directly at the BMW 335i, Mercedes-Benz C350 and Lexus IS350.

And based on that competition, the A4 is the third SLOWEST car.  The BMW 335i gets to 60 in 4.8 seconds, the Lexus IS350 gets it done in 5.1 seconds, the Audi A4 3.2 clocks a 5.7 and the Mercedes-Benz finishes out the race at 6.0 seconds.

I’d say we caught ourselves a rat with this commercial and subsequent claim by Audi.  The A4 3.2 Quattro IS NOT the fastest car in the segment, and testing proves it.  I’d say Audi is out of line for testing their larger engines against the competitor’s smaller engines, wouldn’t you?

I have laid out the evidence, now I ask you…

Do you believe Audi’s claim to have the fastest car in the segment?

according to the edmunds test of the A4 it is actually slower than the C350 is, and based on the times it would also make it slower than the 328i is also making not even a match for the 335i or its over 300hp competition either in the speed department.......sad that Audi has to lie to attempt to sell cars, because it isnt the fastest nor the largest car in its class........and most fuel efficient remains to be seen

aalza3eem - The flaw to your statement is simply this, the 2.0 IS NOT AVAILABLE YET, only the 3.2.

Deceptive at best.

Also, the all wheel drive models for Mercedes, Lexus and BMW ARE NOT THE BIG SELLING MODELS, they are more niche for certain markets.

As such I do believe there is some deception at play here.

Both engines where available immediately.

Therefore, AUDI ad is a lie, or at least not true.

the claim is clearly within the A4 2.0 segment. These models are existing and in production, just because you can't buy it at your corner dealer yet does not make it deceptive. Audi is advertising a product that will shortly be available (if this were XBOX or Apple advertising for their upcoming platforms no one here would be complaining) thus IMO the product will shortly be available and that is fair game. The fact that you and others here cling to this irrelevant technicality only serves to prove how biased you are. The facts are true and you look to discredit them because of an availability issue. Nice.

carmandan & jeffgall,

Congratualtions, guys - you hit the nail right on the head! I was about to post a comment explaining how that Audi ad was accurate, but you two beat me to the punch.

By the way, I have driven A4s with both the 4-cylinder and 6-cyllinder engines. (Both cars had automatic transmissions.) The standard 2.0 T is one sweet little engine - smooth and quiet in normal use, but it definitely knows how to party! I didn't clock both cars, but the 4-cylinder definitely feels faster. The four-cylinder engine has 54 less hp than the six, but 15 MORE lb-ft of torque. The peak power and torque of the 4-cylinder are available at a lower and wider rpm range than the V6. I really had to mash the throttle of the 3.2-liter V6 to get it to come alive, while the 2.0 T I-4 feels frisky at all throttle settings.

Btw, the 2.0T has EPA ratings of 21 city/27 highway, compared to the 3.2 V6 ratings of 17 city/26 highway.

Audi is going to have a hard time selling the 3.2 V6 when the standard 2.0 T I-4 is so wonderful.

not really, the evo is a race car, an amazing machine. The A4 also has an amazing 2.0T engine that probably gets much better fuel economy, lower emissions, and still great torque down low. It's in an every-day luxury car so it has to be driveable as well, not just appealing to 20-30yo men.

Audi could build an engine that eclipses the EVO engine if they wanted to.

Don't get me wrong, I like the EVO, but to compare them or to say the 2.0T in the A4 isn't an impressive engine is just foolish.

Hey aarononymous, don't get me wrong, i like the new A4 but the 2.0 turbo engine is nothing spectacular. Forget about the EVO, let's look at the mazdaspeed3. It has about 280 torque. That's quite a figure compared to Audi's 250. Ok the mazdaspees has a 2.3 and the audi has a 2.0. And don't try to feed me some bs that the mazdaspees3 is a race car and the audi is a familly car. Bottom line, there is nothing impressive with those figures on the audi's turbo. If you wanna see how impressive the engine is, you up the booost and see how it can take it. If the engine breaks down well goodluck audi.

Also, don't you think it is a little flawed to bring a smaller model to a fight against some pretty big hitters like BMW, Lexus and MB?

I tested all these models at the Audi Driving Experience. They were all loaded similarly, with sport packages to avoid disparity. They had a performance course which tested for acceleration, braking, sharp turning, zig-zagging and braking off the curve in addition to a high speed course. Four cars each of these very models were available. I personally rated the A4 first for great acel, braking around a tight corner, steering feel and styling, the C-Class second mainly for the smoothness of the engine and styling, the BMW 3rd mainly due to oversteer arounf tight turns, sluggish braking and plasticky interior, the Lexus had no business being in this category, seats were too soft, it had a soft ride, braking was sluggish... this car had no business being in a sport category.

I can't wait for the 300HP supercharged V6 from Audi which is said to replace the 3.2 V6 that is being talked about in this forum.

Think what ever you want of 00J. However this ad is misleading at best.
If you have to verify your ad by fine print, then there is something in it that isn't exact.
This segment includes BMW 335, MB C350, Lexus IS350, Infinity G37. But the misconception of "Audi of America, Inc" defining the segment as anything is simply misleading.
Proof: Go to and Audi dealership and ask what engine option come with an A4.
Are they gonna start asking you what segment you are referring to since Audi of America has a different definition of the segment?
NO!
It might be the case that the A4 2.0t quattro is faster than the 328xi, C300, or IS250awd. However that does not qualify it as the fastest car in the segment!

You asked for an apology, you are getting your apology.

Do I think this ad is misleading? YES.

Do I think it is misleading of Audi to bring a ringer to a fight against everyone else's lame duck offerings? YES.

Am I man enough to concede that within the context of the criteria set forth by Audi that the Audi is in fact the fastest car? YES.

With all that being said, I still think as a whole Audi duped us with this commercial. The segment includes cars like the BMW 335i, the Lexus IS350 and Mercedes Benz C350. By choosing the SLOWEST cars from each of the competitors, it is easy to declare yourself the fastest, but that does not make it true either.

But when I am wrong, I am wrong. Based on the criteria Audi used in conducting its test, the A4 is the fastest car.

In a real world market segment comparison however, the Audi IS NOT the fastest car.

I don't hate Audi, however I stand by my claim that their ad is misleading.

No, you wouldn't add the S4 or AMG or M3 models as they really are separate cars within the lineup just as you wouldn't compare a convertible to a sedan even though they both me be in competing series.

The A4 2.0 and 3.2 compete in a segment of the market that also includes the BMW 328i & 335i, the Mercedes C300 / C350, the Lexus IS250 / IS350 as well as the Infiniti G37.

A4 2.0 Quattro competes with the 328xi and the IS250 AWD and the C300 4 matic. That is the segment it competes in.

when you saying 3 series, what pops up in my mind would be the current 3 series, which include 328 and 335, but not M3 because that's called M series (go to BMW website and see if u can find M3 under 3 series). same thing goes for C300/350, IS 250/350. the RS4 would compare with the IS-F M3 AMG C63, and to some extend, GTR.

at any rate. what would you think if someone say:" Canadian is much richer than American and are better educated." because the poorest Canadian is richer/better educated than the poorest American?

People act like ads like this have not been done before. "3 Series" means 328 as much as it means 335.

"Do I think it is misleading of Audi to bring a ringer to a fight against everyone else's lame duck offerings? YES."

What are you talking about? The A4 is actually the ONLY CAR in this segment to offer a four-cylinder engine but they get the most out of it compared to the others' small sixes. It's not only the quickest but it's also the most fuel efficient and the largest car in this segment... not to mention, the best-looking.

I would, without a second thought, pick a 335xi over a boring A4 3.2 but the 2.0T reigns supreme in the smaller-engine class.

S4fanatic - So if the A4 20.t is the value leader for the Audi lineup, wouldn't you agree to be fair it should be compared against the value leaders for BMW, MB and Lexus? If you agree, then the correct cars to test it against would be the 328i, C300 Sport and the IS250.

00J, fine print has been in car ads since color TV's, lol.

Audi only has the quattro automatic available right now, so they tested there base engine quattro automatic vs the same configuration as the others.

When the S4 & RS4 come out Audi will have 4 cars on that platform compared to most likely 3 for the others. This seems like a fair comparison to me & Audi has backed up their claims in the ad.

I'm sorry, maybe some clarification is in order here. First of all, the A4 was compared with it's competition with all wheel drive and automatic transmissions. That would be an IS250 AWD with Automatic, a 328xi, and a C300 4matic with an Automatic. They are pretty comparable in price for the most part therefore, the test is valid.

Never follow,

Where does this leave the A4 3.2?

I mean all the Audi lovers were saying that the "A4 3.2 competes with the BMW 328xi". Now Audi is defining the class as "A4 2.0t, mb c300, BMW328xi..." So Audi is correct when they say that the 2.0t is the fastest in the class. But that leaves the A4 3.2 to compete against the likes of the 335, G37, IS350 where the A4 3.2 gets destroyed.

What’s wrong with the Advertisement Is that Audi says that the “A4” is the fastest car in its class. When a clueless loser sees that commercial they will believe that ALL A4s are faster (including the 3.2).

It is deceptive advertising.
Shame on you Audi!!

The pricing is an issue as well, the A4 2.0 comes in at $32,700. The BMW 328xi starts at $35,300 and the MB at $36,525. That is a big difference in base prices. You can argue that pricing shows the true value of the Audi, but there is a large margin in base prices of the competitors.

The 3.2 is a waste of time and money. Until they drop a larger engine in there without giving it an "S4" badge there is no reason to get a big-engined A4. It's always been that way, but now more than ever. Everyone else has put 300+hp six-cylinders in their small sedans... everyone but Audi. S4fanatic & Neverfollow,

YES, THE TEST is valid! AND
YES, the A4 2.0 quattro maybe the fastest entry level all wheel drive in the segment.
However, the segment is NOT defined by that criteria. Which the fine print specifies what Audi means when they are stating their defenition for said segment.
That is exactly what makes THE AD misleading!!!!
Again, if fine print is needed, something is not exact! And 00J initial premise is valid.
Audi is being misleading in THE AD, not the fine print or the comparison! Which, I'm sure, if you went in to buy an A4 3.2 because you saw AN AD the stated the A4 (ad doesn't state A4 2.0 quattro, fine print does) is the fastest car in the segment, Audi would not pause to have you read the fine print and make sure you understand the 3.2 is slower and perhaps the slowest vehicle in THE SEGMENT!!!

Audi is guilty of using facts to mislead people to buy their product. Be it 3.2 or 2.0t quattros, they want more A4 sales and have mislead those who buy a 3.2 because of THE AD.

People who want a sporty A4, don't expect one (only the S4 and RS4 model ranges). People who want conservative luxury in a very high quality fit and finish then Audi is the right brand for you. If you want a brand for known luxury, curb appeal, marque name, good quality (after there few years rut) then get a MB. If you want more bang for buck value but a very well put together interior and don't care for typically boring looks then get a Lexus. Want an alternative brand for luxury and comfort then buy a Jaguar.

When companies have a product they advertise it to try to get you to buy it, so they make money.

The Hyundai ads are rediculous because nobody cross-shops a Hyundai with a 5 or 7-series, but if it helps them sell cars what's the problem?

What's so unfair about the claim? THat's the only platform Audi has available, AWD automatic trans. The previous A$ was quicker & more fuel efficient in FWD setup, so there's a fair chance the same could be said when those versions come out.

First you all try pinning it on the fact that Audi is using the 3.2, now you are saying fine print is something new?

Seen any of those Hyundai ads where they say the Genesis or the other one have more leg room than a 760i or faster than a 550i or whatever?

Well it's probably true but a rediculous comparison. Audi just based there claims on very similar cars in their segment.

Guys,

This horse has been beaten to death several times over. This is getting way out of hand.

The Audi add compares their entry-level A4 (2.0-liter I-4 engine, AWD) to comparable models from BMW, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz. That was explained to me by my local Audi dealer. Audi clearly stated this (NOT in fine print, by the way) in their salesmem's manuals comparing the A4 with the BMW 328xi, M-B C300 4Matic, and Lexus IS 250 AWD. The A4 2.0 T Quattro was faster to 60 mph, had better gas mileage, and was roomier than the rivals mentioned above. There was no deception. It's just that Audi compared a specific A4 to its BMW, Mercedes and Lexus conterparts. End of story.

Comparing the A4 3.2 to the BMW 335i, M-B C350 Sport, etc. WOULD be an unfair comparison because the 3.2 was never meant to compete with these models. I frankly think Audi offered the 3.2 V6 because some people thought an 4-cyldiner engine was not "prestigious" enough. (The 3.2 V6 costs more than the I-4 engine, is heavier, consumes more gas, and has less torque. You do the math.)

We will have to wait until the (diesel-powered) A4 3.0 TDI and the (supercharged 3.0-liter V6) S4 become avaialble in 2009 before the A4 can be compared with cars like the BMW 335d or 335i.

The G is only 2 inches longer than the new (185in) A4.

It's slower than a 335i.

The gas mileage is terrible. It isn't turbocharged, so it could be easily surpassed if you tuned a 335i or even an A4 2.0T. Big, thirsty V6s are not the best option.

A friend of mine has an '08 G35X and it's certainly a nice car, pleasant to drive, but I wouldn't buy one. It just doesn't stand out from the pack very much any more. If the G37X is out next year I'll consider it.

First, clearly, if you were to read the print, the commerical refers to the A4 2.0T quattro and not the 3.2. Your intent to start falme wars is evident and seems to be the only way to attract traffic to this looser site.

Second, "training", "experience" and certainly not opinions are substitute for facts and results.

Engineering is a profession based on facts, tests and results. Nothing gets approved with just experience or training so please do not qualify these results based on these attributes. It really tells much about the seriousness of this so-called car fan forum.

I've actually tested these three models at an 'Audi Driving Experience' in NH last month and I have no doubt of any of those claims.

amazinBimmer, look at the demographics of the customer base, Audi surpasses BMW in education, income, and ability to use the internet for researching. Calling Audi a FWD when we all know it sells mainly AWD really tells me how frustrated you are in attempting to bring down this great brand. Someone with "true" money (you mean other than "fake" money, LOL) would not even have to make reference to the cost.

Have you ever tried arguing with facts rather than biased, uninformed, ignorant and stupid opinions. It can do wonders for your ability to convince someone.

I agree with 1evlAudi, how sad you and all other low IQ fanboys here are. After all this site is nothing but a dirty, twisted and biased copy of much better and respected sites.

I can't wait for the new 3.0 TDI diesels coming out for the Q5, it wold be nice to see the 8 cyl TDIs but I don't think they will come stateside. I'm also holding on to my A6 until an S7 comes out loaded with the new platform, engines, AWD system and other goodies.
