As for it stealing Lexus or BMW sales, highly unlikely considering they are different types of buyers. Go into a Hyundai dealership, and then step into a Lexus one and see if there is a difference.

They are infatuated with M-B and the Germans, but they will never touch those marquee brands.

Right now, their are stuck somewhere in the middle. For similar quality and lower prices Hyundai is throwing down the gauntlet. The Germans will cost you more, but you GET more class/style and more sport/performance.

I don't understand that post. Who is telling that Hyunday as the class, the quality and the standing you need in this category. I have never saw a Hyundai park into the drive way of a star. The genesis is probably a good car but never as good as lexus. So Chrysler with is 300 serie are probably affect by this car, but not Lexus, M-B or BMW.

Actually the Genesis looks much better than the Lexus LS.. I bet the quality of the Hyundai is much better than Toyo/Lexus too.

S Class? do you drive one to back what you say? Because I drive one and it's high end European luxury. My LS460 is no where close in character, touch, and luxury compared to the marquee S. I love my Lex but you can't put down the S when the LS was inspired by Mercedes in the first place. Don't forget the roots.

I don't think that it's better than a lexus...but if it's 85% as good as a lexus and costs 60% of the price, a lot of people whose money is tighter are going to go for the cheaper option.

I saw one on going out for a test drive the other day, and it was pretty hideous. It doesn't look as good as any of the luxury sedans anywhere near its price range.. ES, GS, 3 series, 5 series, C class, E class.... it's at the bottom of the barrel.

It is clear from the exterior design and interior theme of the Hyundai Genesis that it has aimed at Lexus and Toyota should be scared..... VERY SCARED..

The way I see it is you (QueerMatrix) is the only sad individual on here. You're so hell bent on bashing the Lexus brand, you're about to blow an artery. I don't give a shit about what you "say" you own, for all I know you're probably blowing smoke up my a$$. I have a 1994 Lexus LS400 with 225XXX miles on it and the only things I've replaced on it is the radiator, TPS, front left bearing. Other than that, all the routine maintenance tune up, oil changes. My wife owns a 2005 VW Jetta with no problems whatsoever. We have a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe that has been great so far, especially on road trips. I'm no mechanic, but I have enough sense to know when something is wrong with the car I'm driving. My brother in laws 2003 M3 is a remarkable car despite the recall for the power window control. Bottom line is the Hyundai Genesis will create it's own segment due to the econo-boxes in their line-up.

Quick Question: QueerMatrix, who do you think Hyundai is aiming at with the Hyundai Equus?

the Genesis is a nice looking car on its own, but i have to agree with you on that....the "cheap car" Hyundai was when it first hit the staes is what alot of people relate to it as..still...a new upscale line would have been better for sales and variety... they could have brought out like 5 cars at once that way.

I test drove the Genesis, and while I was very impressed with the styling and features for the price, I for some reason wasnt sold on the car. I think a lot of that was the brand. I then looked at the new Maxima, and although the Genesis had more features for the price, I was moreso sold on the Maxima. That being said, I feel that Hyundai has to be able to compete more so with Nissan, Toyota, and Honda buyers before it can tackle the Lexus clientele. Now I may consider it over the Avalon, but would likely purchase a CC, Maxima, (maybe even the boring ES3000) and a few others over this. I think of Hyundai as a all economy brand and have a hard time calling even their luxury cars as anything more than an economy car.

I would hardly call a Lexus "elegant"...

If the Hyundai makes a dent in the US market it's only because we're a bunch of gullible buffoons that will believe anything that marketeers come up with. The Germans need to up their game, the Japanese have the GT-R.

The GT-R is a cheap imitation of a European supercar. The Japanese also have Lexus and Infiniti with their own imitations of... luxury cars. The German model is still there, so the Japanese can copy and follow and... copy again.

Let the cheap imitation leave you in the dust. I love German cars, I own several, but I'm open minded enough to know that the GT-R is an awesome car. Remember, the GT-R is a technically a salon and it still beat the 911 Turbo. Also, chances are very good that the V-Spec GT-R will beat the PDK equipped 911. Remember, the GT-R is a technically a salon car.

That's because Lexus buyers are not car enthusiasts so it will take a while for them to hear about the new product offered by Hyundai as an alternative to a Lexus.

I agree to a point, but I have looked at the Hyundia, and at first, sure it looks nice, but the quality is not there, atleast not yet...

Being a loyal Lexus and MB owner, I knew it was just a matter of time before Hyundai starts making ripples in the water. Over the coarse of the 20 years Lexus has been in the game, Lexus definitely put a dent in the Euro Brands marketshare in North America, if all you euro fan boys say that it will put a dent on Lexus sales....for once stop being ignorant and look at the whole picture, it will put a dent on all other luxury brands that will be in the way of Hyundai...but remember it's not as easy as you may think about Hyundai being able to pull this off in today's world....compared to at least 20 years ago...there is still alot to prove why they should buy one more so the price.

Most people who like Mercedes will continue to buy them and most people who like BMW will also continue to buy them but many people who see a cheaper alternative to Lexus will probably be tempted away, there will always be a number who are conned by Toyota`s so called reliability and buy Lexus, but Toyota don`t care as long as people buy them, I wonder why they chose the name Lexus, maybe because it starts with L for loser

Originally, this came out to compete with the LS 460. If you do an Edmund's comparison between the Genesis 4.6 and the LS 460, it's almost laughable. There is a huge list of features on the LS that aren't even available on the Genesis. But comparing it to the ES 350 is more suitable. I can agree with that.

Hyundai is bringing Equus for that.

Although I can understand how BMW and M-B consumers are looking down on Hyundai and their new Genesis, but it blows my mind how Lexus fans do the same. When I hear the name Mercedes and BMW, I think "high-class luxury vehicles(M-B)," "The Ultimate Driving Machine (BMW)," "Great handling and communications between the car and driver (BMW)." When I hear the name Acura, I think over-priced Honda Accord with some luxury but little prestige. Same for Infinite although I respect Infiniti for making their cars more sporty and almost as good as BMW cars. When I hear Lexus, I think "expensive and boring-to-drive but comfortable household appliances for the majority of people who only want to go from point A to B." I seriously don't know why people think of Lexus as a high-class luxury marque. Now that Hyundai has released the Genesis, I consider Hyundai on equal footing with Toyota/Lexus.

Compared to Toyota/Lexus, Hyundai has accomplished far more in a shorter period of time than the Japanese did. Although I'm not old enough to have been alive when Toyota and Honda first released their cars in the US, but some older people I've talked to all say that back then, Japanese cars were small, crappy, and unreliable econocars that improved after ~40 years.

On another note, the reason why Hyundai cars are doing well and increasing their market share is because for the most part, American consumers are still smart and value-oriented people compared with other parts of the world. Within the US population, I believe white people are the most reasonable, practical, and value-oriented sub-race. I'm not saying white people aren't or can't be snobbish and image-oriented but compared to other races like Chinese and Koreans, they are more down-to-earth and less likely to be brand-whores.

Most Hyundai drivers I see on the road are like 98% whites (here in Orange County). It's not b/c they're poorer than their Asian counterparts--they're simply more practical in general.

Asians, on the other hand, especially the Chinese and Koreans, are absolute brand-whores. They are so self-conscious and care so much about what their friends, family, and future potential mates will think, they go out of their way to buy new brand-name cars they can't afford. If they can't buy new, they will buy used brand-name cars and pretend they actually had the money in the first place to buy it. And if that fails, they'll lease the car for 2 to 4 years and pretend they're so successful.

And the funniest thing is, I've seen so many Asians drive "nice cars" but they live in crappy apartments and small houses with low rent.

It's a nice car, but not cheap, so I don't think it will take much away from the established luxury brands. It will probably compete with the higher end family sedans like Camry, Accord, Maxima, Passat, etc. That was probably their original intent.

I saw one the other day..I thought it was a Benz. I know everyone on this site wants to compare this car to a Lexus, but if you notice in their ads, they are calling out Bmw and Mercedes more. Not a Hyundai fan, but the car actually looks pretty good (copy of MB, BMW, Infiniti IMO) The front looks like a MB, the back looks like BMW, the interior is Infiniti....Hell,I figure if you're going to copy, why not copy some of the best looking vehicles. They are even calling out Porsche

Been a BMW owner for last 10 years. Just traded in my BMW 528i for the Genesis. I am very happy with my decision. Needed a new car for my daily drive. Test drove the 550i, ls460, and the MB E550. I bought the Genesis on the spot after the test drive. Drive was very balanced; in between Lexus(soft) and BMW(handling). I have 2 other cars in my garage: a BMW 3 series and a Porsche.
