Does It Give You A Postive Charge? Chevrolet Offically Releases The New Volt
General Motors launched its next 100 years today by unveiling the much-anticipated production version of the Chevrolet Volt – a vehicle that delivers up to 40 miles of gasoline- and emissions-free electric driving, with the extended-range capability of hundreds of additional miles.

"Revealing the production version of the Chevy Volt is a great way to open our second century," said Rick Wagoner, GM Chairman and CEO. "The Volt is symbolic of GM's strong commitment to the future ... just the kind of technology innovation that our industry needs to respond to today's and tomorrow's energy and environmental challenges."

Form follows function

The design of the Chevrolet Volt production car has evolved from the original concept that was unveiled at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Because aerodynamics plays a key role in maximizing driving range, GM designers created an aerodynamically efficient design for the production vehicle. Many of the design cues from the concept vehicle endure in the production Volt, including the closed front grille, athletic stance, rear design graphics, outside rearview mirrors and more. The Volt's rounded and flush front fascia, tapered corners and grille are functional, enabling air to move easily around the car. In the rear, sharp edges and a carefully designed spoiler allow the air to flow off and away quickly. An aggressive rake on the windshield and back glass help reduce turbulence and drag.

Working closely with GM aerodynamicists to shape the Volt, design and engineering teams developed one of the most aerodynamic vehicles in GM's history. They spent hundreds of hours with the Volt in GM's wind tunnel, testing and re-testing parts such as the front and rear quarter panels, rear spoiler, rockers and side mirrors. Aerodynamic improvements enabled GM to reach the Volt's target of driving up to 40 miles (based on EPA city cycle) without using gasoline or producing emissions.

Inside, the Volt offers the space, comfort, convenience and safety features that customers expect in a four-passenger sedan, and it delivers them in a variety of interior color, lighting and trim options unlike any offered before on a Chevrolet sedan. Modern controls and attractive materials, two informational displays, and a touch-sensitive infotainment center with integrated shifter distinguish the Volt's interior from other vehicles in the market.

Some of Volt's interior technological features include:

    * Driver-configurable, liquid crystal instrument display
    * Standard seven-inch touch screen vehicle information display
    * Touch screen-style climate and infotainment controls
    * Optional navigation system with onboard hard drive for maps and music storage
    * Standard Bluetooth for cellular phone and USB/Bluetooth for music streaming


New era in automotive transportation

The Chevrolet Volt is leading a new era of electrification of the automobile by creating a new class of vehicle known as the Extended-Range Electric Vehicle, or E-REV.

The Volt uses electricity to move the wheels at all times and speeds. For trips up to 40 miles, the Volt is powered only by electricity stored in its 16-kWh, lithium-ion battery. When the battery's energy is depleted, a gasoline/E85-powered engine generator seamlessly provides electricity to power the Volt's electric drive unit while simultaneously sustaining the charge of the battery. This mode of operation extends the range of the Volt for several hundred additional miles, until the vehicle's battery can be charged. Unlike a conventional battery-electric vehicle, the Volt eliminates "range anxiety," giving the confidence and peace of mind that the driver will not be stranded by a depleted battery.

The Chevrolet Volt can be plugged either into a standard household 120v outlet or use 240v for charging. The vehicle's intelligent charging technology enables the Volt's battery to be charged in less than three hours on a 240v outlet or about eight hours on a 120v outlet. Charge times are reduced if the battery has not been fully depleted. At a cost of about 80 cents per day (10 cents per kWh) for a full charge that will deliver up to 40 miles of electric driving, GM estimates that the Volt will be less expensive to recharge than purchasing a cup of your favorite coffee. Charging the Volt about once daily will consume less electric energy annually than the average home's refrigerator and freezer units.

Charge out of driving

The Chevrolet Volt offers spirited driving performance in a remarkably quiet interior. More than 220 lithium-ion cells contained within the Volt's battery pack provide ample power. The Volt's electric drive unit delivers the equivalent of 150 horsepower, 273 lb-ft. (370 Nm) of instant torque, and a top speed of 100 miles per hour. The lack of engine noise, combined with special sound-deadening materials, make the Chevrolet Volt an extremely quiet vehicle to drive.

GM estimates that the Volt will cost about two cents per mile to drive while under battery power compared to 12 cents per mile using gasoline priced at $3.60 per gallon. For an average driver who drives 40 miles per day (or 15,000 miles per year), this amounts to a cost savings of $1,500 annually. Using peak electric rates, GM estimates that an electrically driven mile in a Chevy Volt will be about one-sixth of the cost of a conventional gasoline-powered vehicle. The cost savings are even greater when charging during off-peak hours, when electric rates are cheaper.

The Chevrolet Volt is expected to be built at GM's Detroit-Hamtramck manufacturing facility, subject to GM successfully negotiating satisfactory government incentives. Production is scheduled to begin late 2010 for models in the United States. Pricing has not been announced.

This car is not a hybrid. It is driven by electricity only. The gas engine is only there to charge the batteries and does not connect to the drive wheels in anyway.

I think the way the Volt gets power is genius! (But I bet that I'm not the only person that had thought of something like that before.)

It's great how the engine gets to run at its most efficient speed, so extra gas won't be required to go faster.

This should make it easier for the EPA people to measure the fuel efficiency...and for the common people to retain a constant MPG without getting into accidents.

Once again you've all been fooled with all these little technicalities that GM uses in marketing their vehicles. For example, The full size 2-Mode hybrids can achieve up to 50% improvement from the gasoline model; Why don't they just come out and say that it gets 30 MPG instead of a conservative, yet chicken-shit way of using percentage to market. Now, what happens if I don't achieve the 50% improvement (which is highly likely) that is marketed? Then I simply can't complain that much because their advertisement says "UP TO" 50% improvement. So in other words, I would have to drive a certain way (Hypermiling) to achieve anything close to the UP TO 50% as advertised.

VOLT

Scenario; Two friends, John and Adam, who both go out and each buy a Volt. John lives 19 miles from work, Adam lives 52 miles from work. Johns commute to work is calculated at 38 miles round trip and Adams commute is calculated at 104 round trip. Johns commute doesn't use an ounce of gasoline because he's within the 40 mile range on the charge. Now with that said, Johns car is clearly behaving like an EV due to the fact that John doesn't use an ounce of gasoline for his commute, right? Ok. Now let's take a look at Adams situation with his car. At 3/4 of the way to work his small gasoline engine on board his Volt is kicked on to recharge the battery clearly because he's used up the 40 mile charge. Now, GM has you all fooled with the technicality that because the small gasoline is not directly connected to the drive train, it's not a Hybrid. Well, isn't Adams Volt behaving like a Hybrid because it has to use the gasoline engine on board to charge the batteries that happen to be connected to the drive train? Adams commute well surpases that 40 mile range on the charge that GM touts and markets for perfect world scenarios. More than half of Hybrid buyers are commuters by more than 40 miles round trip. Am I the only one who doesn't see the significance of spending $40K (Includes Dealer Mark-Ups) on a car for the 40 mile radius commute? I don't want to read anything from you GM badge whores about how this car is going to help end the Mid-East oil binge the country has been of for years. It still uses gasoline no matter which way you look at it.

They even use crude to produce electricity so either way it uses gasoline. Now, there's a technicality I don't see anybody talking about.

Wow, that's a lot of negativity about quibling over a technicality. The fact is the Volt, regardless of who makes it, has a very inventive drive train that is difficult to classify. If I buy an EV-1 and strap a yamaha generator to the trunk to charge the batteries, is that a hybrid? Isn't a lot of electricity made by coal, so does that make it hybrid since it's dependent on fossil fuels? If I train a monkey to hand crank a generator in the back seat, does that make it a primate hybrid?
I doesn't really matter what they call it: electric, hybrid, series, parallel. The fact is is that it's revolutionary in terms of drive train and the first truly new idea in hybrids since they started. It's going to get great gas mileage and, for some, infinite gas mileage. There's no way it could actually get bad gas mileage. The EPA just has to get their heads around it.

And as for mark ups, I've already been promised mine won't be marked up. Mark up tales come from the few dealers who are the greediest and give the other 75% a bad name.

It had "okay, but not great" reviews from a lot of places only because the concept was so radical and because it's suppose to be the vehicle that saves GM. I agree, I don't think it really looks like the concept, but I still think it's a pretty good looking vehicle, albeit more on the conservative side. Depending on the "real" number and price, I would definitely consider it.

I totally agree with you. To them, bad news is better news. It's easier to trash something than it is to provide the good...that's just news in general.

However, I can see their point. GM and American auto in general is down in the dumps...way down. GM is often seen as the brand with a fighting chance. They have a chance to come back. They have a chance to make great cars again and bring back some pride to the American auto idustry. The future was bright with the Volt concept. People became interested again and it was exactly what the people wanted and THAT was what GM said they were going to deliver. GM "DID" deliver, but it's not exactly the concept. Concepts always change and auto fans know that, but not everyone is an auto fan, and they don't know that and they want the concept...the concept that was promised to them.

It looks good. Its not the concept car shown but that wasn't a practical car design for the masses either, so I'm cool with it. Throw in the fact that you (in theory) will rarely have to stop at a gas station again and thats a recipe for much success.

My first reaction: it's not even close to the concept car--which was very future looking and could have kicked the Prius' ass, based on looks alone.

My second reaction: How could they ruin this? Probably will be a strong competitor IF the performance targets are met. This car has moved from a must-have to a we'll see.

Come on. This thing looks like the outgoing Acura TL. Yes, it does look better than the Prius but I would not buy this Malibu derivative. It doesn't looking even close to the concept car.

Still, if it can get GM out of it's mess it will be worth it.
