the 30 mpg euro rating seems pretty high for this S400. but plesae consider LS600HL, a car that was out for few years already, achieves 24.75 mpg on euro COMBINED cycle.

not to mension the electric motor in LS600HL out puts 165kw compared to a merely 15kw that S400 BH generates, LS600HL combined output is 327 KW compared to 220 KW S400 BH has. and despite S400BH is much ligher, it takes 7.2 sec to reach 0 to 100 km/h, one full second slower than the lexus.

I am not kind of guy who hugs the tree. and i am not a fanboy of any car brand. and i never bought a lexus becuaes i perfer more of a drivers car. but you got to admit Toyota/lexus' hybrid system is the best as of today, in fact, it was the best 5 years ago. the combined torque for a prius, if configured properly, can out out 330 lb, much more than any diesel in that class. now that's a number many of your toyota haters didn't know, and perhapes never want to know. just like your german fanboys keep denying the benefit of hybrid in 2004 untile BMW, AUDI, and Merc jumped into it.

I did not bring the diesel into the argument, or did u think the S400 is a diesel engine + electric motor just becuase it is named 'blue'? at any rate, feel free to deboost me, but u cannot deny 15kw electric motor sounds more like a marking gimmick than something that's acutally useful.

let me tell you something you may be interested in. the 15kw/160 NM electric motor (if you actually read the article not just the title), is very much similar, if not identical to the one used in current civic hybrid. now answre this question: giving the mass of S class, do you really think that 20 hw electric motor would be anywhere near useful?

the electric motor in prius is capable to output 258 ft.lbf. and its 1.5L add another 82 ft.lbf of torque.

Prius uses 'E-CVT', it has some CVT character, but it is actually a differnt design. i won't go into the detail of how prius manages to drive using only one gear ratio, but if toyota want a high torque output instead of fuel efficieny, they can just change the sun gear and ring gear so the max torque of the ICE and electric motor can combine, that will give you 82+258=340 lb ft of torque. (the gen of prius, which is due later this year, has 85+295=380 lb ft of torque).

lol...i would expect this kind of response from German fanboys, but if you look much closer and acutally read the specs, Lexus pulled this level of egineering in a V8, with a configured 6 speed tranny and nickel batteries. Where MB pulled this off in a V6, 7speed tranny, and litium ion batteries and that is all the milage you can get?!?!?. It would be interesting to see the U.S. EPA ratings if this is quoted on Euro EPA ratings, then OUCH!!! And as for the premium hybrid price tag, don want to bother knowing that. I'm sure Lexus can do the exact same deal with a full 8 speed configured tranny and lithium ion batteries, and actually get much better milage than what MB can barely pull off in their V6, great marketing tatics for MB but when comparing apples, they are in a league of their own. Lexus still pulled off their technology in a much large engine/scale which is more complex to make a hybrid work compared to a V6. Remember kids Lexus is not the guinea pig here, MB just made themselves one by trying to prove in a much smaller form of egnineering, disappointing especially coming from an innovative company such as MB...

the LS uses a dual CVT transmission that can imitate 8 speeds. it does not use a 6 speed

Guy, the LS and S-Class are both full size sedans. The S400 is not a competitor to the GS450h -- it is far bigger and will (presumably) be far more expensive.

cars are generally classed by size. the S-class is an enormous sedan while the GS is cramped "luxury" sedan that nobody over 6'1" can even sit in comfortably. so what's your point?

will be very interesting to see the real world comparisons. and since this will likely cost LESS than the wildly price-inflated LS600, i'm curious if the LS600 will survive.

At first I did not think that 30 mpg (presumably highway driving) was that impressive. But then I looked at the EPA ratings for the Mercedes S550, Audi A8L, BMW 750iL, & Lexus LS460l. None of these cars did any better than 24 mpg (EPA). I had forgotten how pathetic the mileage for these big machines was.

I have presumed that the NEDC tests are roughly similar to the EPA tests. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

However, I suspect that an S-class diesel would still get better mileage and performance than this S400 BlueHYBRID.

The current S320 CDI is rated at 28.4 MPG EU-combined and 0-62 in 7.5 seconds. Though this is a pretty old engine. This compared to the 23.8 MPG of the S350.
The S420 CDI is rated at 25 MPG EU-combined and 0-62 in 6.0 seconds, though also not the most recent engine.

I am 6" and when i sat in the back seats of Jaguar XF i felt very tight/little cramped. So what, i loved the interior. as if luxury means only space. Even if XF is little short on interior room i would still buy it over 5 series or E class.
So stop putting down GS just because it offers an inch less space.

btw my point was what u'll get in a S400 BlueHybrid, u can already get that in a GS450h minus a bit of space. I am sure the buyer of such cars number one priority isn't space.

i can't fit in the DRIVER seat of the GS with my head bumping the roof if i hit a pothole. read the consumer reports review, they said the same thing.
