BMW fastest in Jerez as teams test 2009 setups.

he majority of the Formula One teams were present at Jerez on Wednesday for the second day of the in-season's final group test session. Things have now begun moving into full swing as the Spanish circuit bathed in warm and sunny conditions.

Development work is being done on aerodynamic packages and set-up configurations, with some teams trying out their Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems to be used next year.

Following yesterday's "Young Driver Day" in which three teams participated, the atmosphere was much busier today with eight cars on the track. Among the test and reserve drivers at work, Italian Grand Prix winner Sebastian Vettel was also accumulating laps, but he did so for his future team Red Bull Racing rather than for Toro Rosso.

Christian Klien was the quickest driver, speeding across the 4.423-kilometre circuit aboard the BMW Sauber F1.08 and recording a best time of 1:19.537.

Meh, BMW is rarely the fastest car on the grid, usually in the middle of the pack on lap times & speed trap.

I remember when they first got back into F1 the engine made up for not the best balanced chassis, cars would come up on them in the turns but the BMW engine would pull out of the turn like a freight train.

Mid pack? they are third in the championship, they were in the lead for a while. Next year they should be fighting for the championship which is impressive considering it will only be there 4th season as a engine and chassis manufacturer.

Oh and this got on here the same way the Formula 2 news did.or the Audi lemans news does.

I'm well aware of where they stand. I've been a BMW F1 fan since they came back & have watched every race this year. When they show the fastest lap or speed trap classifications BMW are rarely in the top, so it's hard to say if BMW is one of the top engines like they were in the past. I assume that is why this thread is here.

I can livw with an F1 race result post or Lemans post, but a Formula 2 or F1 practice post really doesn't need to be here, there are F1 sites.

Also they've been an engine manufacturer since 1999 I think and Sauber was an established chassis. Can't wait to se Kubica take the next step in 2009 & sounds like Alonso might be joining him. Doesn't sound good for Quick-Nick. He's been a steady finisher for a while now & I feel bad for him.

I hear what your saying in general they don't have the fastest trap speeds, but the BMW were among the fastest on the straights at monza in the dry. I think BMW was in le mans in 99 then F1 00 onward. But about this article BMW has consistently been the fastest at tests when the teams have been testing 2009 spec equipment...it may be a little foreshadowing of things to come.

I hope you're right, this year has been great and if BMW get that last 1% to tangle with McLaren & Ferrari it will be even better.

It would take Audi years to build a competitive F1 car. And even then success isn’t guaranteed. Toyota “The company that can be successful in whatever they chose to do” have been in F1 since 2002 and during that time their average finishing position is 11th (out of the points). I don’t Audi will make an impact in F1 at all.
