Is BMW's X6 Just The Wrong Vehicle At The Wrong Time?

Is BMW's X6 Just The Wrong Vehicle At The Wrong Time?
Just to get the basics out of the way, I am not a fan of BMWs new X6. It's too big  too late  too gas-hungry, and too expensive. It's also ugly. In this era of downsizing to save on gasoline, it stands out like a sumo wrestler at a yoga retreat.

New for the '08 model year, the X6 is an all-wheel-drive crossover vehicle designed to combine the high-off-the-ground seating of a sport-utility vehicle with the driving characteristics of a sports car. You'd think designers would have made it smaller, nimbler, and more fuel-efficient than the BMW X5 SUV, with which it shares a platform. Instead, the X6 is an inch longer (at 192 in.) and two inches wider (at 78 in.). At around 5,000 lb., the X6 is also almost as heavy as the X5. The big difference is that its roofline is three inches lower than the X5's at its peak point, and curves down dramatically in the back.

The main problem with the X6 is that it only seats a maximum of four—two up front and two in the bucket-style backseats—vs. a maximum of seven for the X5 and Volkswagen's Audi Q7, and five for Nissan's Infiniti FX50 and Porsche's Cayenne. In keeping with one of the more inane marketing trends among German manufacturers, BMW calls the X6 a "coupe," even though it's essentially an SUV with four doors (plus a rear hatch). Traditionally, coupes are supposed to be smaller than sedans and only have two doors—but, never mind. Coupes have a sporty image, and tradition mustn't get in the way of a marketing gimmick.

Yeah really. And you need to look up the definition of coupe as it applies to automobiles. There have been 4 door coupes since at least the early 60s. The Rover P5 was the best known.

And BMW have sold all the 08s and I think all the 09s allocated. Yeah. It must be the wrong time!

Slow day? Slow author, more like it. "UGLY"? Um, WHAT? Say again? Forgive me for being more than a little incredulous, 'author #9', but I don't believe ANYBODY, including you, honestly believes the stunning form of this BMW is "ugly". No. Sorry. I think you are LYING, author. I can think of only three types of people who would have the gall to describe the X6 as "ugly" (especially to this, of all readerships).

1) some utterly tasteless and out-of-touch amateur,
2) somebody who is REALLY old, or
3) some snotty, disingenuous phony who really doesn't give a damn about this particular vehicle, but rather despises SUVs in general, and has now deployed as storm trooper against them, towards a 'Final Solution' -- the day when all SUVs are wiped clean from this Earth

Do you not like SUVs, author? I'm so sorry. Get a grip man, this isn't Vanity Fair; pack up your little SUV bashing roadshow and find some other blog to whine in hippie.

And again, just because alot of people buy something does not necessarily validate it's supremacy. It could easily validate only broad lack of taste.

havent we covered this already? Also, how is it the wrong time? 95% of all the X6's are sold. Every dealer in Chicago is on a wait list for this vehicle. But you are right, it is the wrong time. Wouldnt it also been the wrong time for the Audi S5 ( which gets 14 / 18 in gas )or the M3 , or the Cadillac CTS-V, or Lexus IS-F ... what a dumb article ..

Yes, sold from the factory, not the delear lot. There are plenty of them in the tri-state BMW delearships. Not trying to say its a bad car, just a big difference between the factory building a relatively small number of vehicles and the delears selling out instantly.

First of all, no one was talking to you, so dont begin your statement with an "i know". No one cares what you know, thus your name wasnt mentioned. Second, "Commonsense has no commonsense", even if i was wrong, your line makes no sense, knowing whether a delear has X6 in stock has nothing to do with common sense, rather going to a dlear and finding out. When i was looking for a sport SUV, Hunterdon BMW in NJ, had exactly what i wanted exactly a month ago. Before you start flappin on the internet, think what you say.

Maybe its not about timing but the vehicle itself. Although i myself enjoy sport suvs like the fx50 and Cayenne turbo, this kind of takes it to far. The fact that thos cars provide easy comfort for 5 and a huge trunks compared to the X6, that kind of place it nowhere. I just dont see the any reason of purchasing this over a 535xi wagon. Its much faster, much more econmical, cheaper and is 1300 lbs lighter.

komododavekomododave - 9/19/2008 1:25:02 PM

I'd like to point out that your "huge trunks compared to the X6" are as follows in cubic feet:
Car = seats up/seats down
X6 = 25.6/59.7
FX = 24.8/62.0
Cayanne = 19.1/62.5

The X6 has the most room when the seats are up!!! Fancy that. Plus there is less than 3 cubic foot difference maximum when the seats are down. That is not much for seats down operation.
Lets look at the speed argument:
535xi wagon: 5.7 sec 0-60
X6 xdrive3.5: 5.9 sec 0-60
Wow....that's just so much faster!!

All numbers pulled from Motortrend and manufacturers web sites.

Wait...What about the price??
Glad you asked.

Base price of an X6 xdrive3.5 is $52,500. The 535xi? $54,400. It's MORE expensive. There goes your entire argument.

oh Komodo, you have much to learn my friend. First cubic feet is a dynamic measurement. I have seen the trunk in the x6 and it is completely useless becuase the top gets cut off by the sloping roofline although it is a bit longer, thats why when you look at the cubic feet, it seems ok, then you try to fit 2 suitcases and see what happens. You mention 0-60, lets make it simple for you. An xdrive35 weighs in at over 5100 lbs. The 535xi weighs in around 3800. Thats a difference of 1300lbs and the same engine. Are you really trying to imply that 1300lbs of extra weight, exactly the same engine and almost identical gear ratios gives a difference of .2 seconds??? smoking much? ive driven both and the x35drive feels lethargic compared to the 535 wagon. I will make an easier comparison for you. the old 330i with the 3.0 265hp engine weighed 3500lbs, the old x5 with the same engine weighed in at 4700. The 3 series did 0-60 in 5.7seconds, the same engined x5 did it in 9 seconds. Starting to see the difference??

You're wrong Agent004. The number you offer is for the 535xi SEDAN not the wagon.

And to Commonsense....All I offer is the facts from both reputable publications and manufacturers websites. I have driven both vehicles as well and "perception" is a personal issue while facts are another. Yes the cargo area is a different shape, but as you said it is dynamic. What if I had duffle bags? They fit anywhere. The shape of packages is also dynamic meaning that any "dynamic benefit" the others might have is rendered null and void once you add in the fact that they are not being judged by one size cargo, but ANY size or shape cargo. And the 0-60 I cannot account for in terms of weight and perception, but these are the numbers from motortrend and manufacturers websites. Motortrend got faster numbers than BMW did. Whine all you want about what you feel, but facts are facts.

What I find funny is that BMW fans will buy anything with a contradictory name. For some of us that are not blinded by their marketing we do not fall for unintelligent gimmicks. P-lease.

Besides why would anyone buy an SUV that looks like a Timberland work boot when you can get a Cayenne, FX50 or Q7 (the MB is more luxury styling than sport,IMO) that are sporty and nice to look and better to drive.

Clearly the individual writing this article is as uneducated as it gets. First of all this SAC we brought to the market is more fuel efficient than SUV's such as our very own X5, the Infiniti FX model line, the Porsche Cayenne (all models), and even the Mercedes ML and GL classes. As for sales, well just go to your local BMW dealer US or Canada and try to buy one, and get told you have to wait until Decemeber; Then tell me that BMW released the product at the wrong time. Sounds like BusinessWeek should start editing their stories for accuracy before publishing them. This writer's opinion is completely subjective and not factual.

I'm not a fan of SUVs, especially big ones like the X6. However, BMW has turned out plenty of products over the years that were dissed by the automotive press and petrolheads like us, yet they still sold.

For instance, the current BMW 7-series was lambasted for its "Bangle Butt" when it was introduced in 2002. However, the car sold. In addition, Lord Darth Bangle restyled the other BMW models in a similar manner, and it didn't seem to hurt their sales either.

And let's not forget iDrive, which NO ONE seemed to like, yet BMW sales didn't seem to be affected by it.

Give the BMW marketing devils their due.

Here we go again!!!!! I have been browsing this site for many months just observing the constant bashing of the BMW product. Granted everybody is entitled to their own opinion, and kudos to you who believe in other products and stick by them. I think Mercedes is the best at Luxury, I think Audi makes a great product, and truth be told I think Lexus is a joke (sorry to the fans who like to overpay for a Toyota). BMW is mindset is to provide the ultimate drive, not to offer you the most luxurious and softest, and the plushest vehicle on the road. Rather their goal is to give you a machine that makes everyday driving a little bit more fun. I bet all the guys and gals on here bashing the X6 have never even driven one and are forming their opinions based on some loser at Businessweek who decided lets write an article without researching a damn thing.

Facts are Facts!!!

The X6 is faster than any car its meant to challenge; All of which include the Range Rover Sport Supercharged, The Mercedes ML 63AMG, the Porsche Cayenne (all of them other than the Turbo S), and the Infiniti FX series, while being far more efficient when it comes to fuel consumption. Not to mention a much superior all wheel drive system than that of the competition, and you want to question the vehicle's purpose.

Then the Lexus fanboys come out and start running their mouths about a vehicle they don't even have a competitor for. Am I the only one that see's a problem with that.

At the end of the day we are ALL entitled to our own opinions on a variety of things, but you need to show appreciation and respect to things that you may not particularly think the world of, wether it be a Merc, an Audi, a BMW or even a Lexus.

Can't wait to get ripped up for my comments.

PS. This isn't Agent 009's article, this article belongs to some douchebag from BusinessWeek who clearly just gradutated from college and made his first major mistake of writing an article that should not have been published.

I ran all over town, and NONE of the local Pontiac dealers have any Aztec's left! As a matter of fact, they've been "sold out" for years. I guess those were good attractive cars, too, based on your thought process. lol

Alright so I am back for one more rant because in reality there are some people that post on here who absolutely destroy their credibility with stupid comments.

Someone made the comment about the vehicle being a SAV that only seats for and how that its utility is junk. WELL, the problem is the X6 SAC (Sports Activity COUPE) wasn't designed to move your family around, that's what BMW has an X5 for; GENIUS!!! The car has it's own purpose and its trying share it with the willing buyers.

I get it you don't like the design, you think it's an Aztec (your BLIND!!!!), you think it's to many $$$$$$ (only cause you don't got it). Facts are facts, it doesn't matter that because you love Audi, Lexus, Mercedes, hell even Infiniti who somehow are now considering themselves a PREMIUM LUXURY VEHICLE?!?!?! Truth be told, there are WAY MORE BIMMER LOVERS in this world and that's why the X6 SELLS!!!

Do yourselves a favour, go drive one. Then come back and tell me that's not a great vehicle. Don't really need to explain, the car will do it!!!

P.S. Check your gas consumptions friends, far ahead of your Range Rover, Porsche, and Infiniti. Efficient Dynamics, committed to compromise fuel consumption; but not power. Go back to your drawing boards.

Failure? Sad how those who say it live in a box. There are so many of them on the road. what does that mean you ask? Simple. People are buying them!
