First look at the uncamoed Mercedes S63

The recent Road and Track issue has a conceptual drawing of what a future S series will look like. It is NICE. I always thought car manufacturers should look to some of the illustrators and make their cars look like they do in the car mags. This Merc looks "ok" as an S63 AMG but that's a lot of dough to throw at a car that looks "ok". Throwing massive torque that you can't even efficiently put down on the pavement only goes so far...

if only car companies followed through on their exotic designs and sketches then they would get alot further and make cars that look even more astonishing.

They may look good, but the quality is unproven and without a built in warrenty expect to pay more $$$ then a comparable car from one of the competitors.

I prefer this new one to the current "on-its-last-gasps" S class design. However my favorite S class was the one from the 1980s before the 1990s tank and the sportier one in the 2000s. The 1980s one was angular without being heavy. While its chrome probably weighed a ton, it still looks to me now 15-20 years later. I don't think this new S, or the current S will wear so well.

I wonder if MB decided to add the huge Mitsubishi Montero type wheel arches to the new S-classe because (a.) they decided to have wider wheels at the last minute (b.) they wanted to have a new design theme that they can run through the whole MB family of vehicles and that no other manufacturer would want to steal(c.) they wanted to make the car look wider without having to add the weight of extending the main car body to the edges, or (d.) without the arches the new S-class would look like the attrociously badly received Maybach sedan.

Personally I favor (d.) - what say you?
