Nighttime journeys by car are about to become safer in future. Mercedes-Benz has developed an innovative system that automatically adapts headlamp range to the distance of vehicles ahead or to oncoming vehicles. This means car drivers will at all times benefit from optimum headlamp range to recognise other road users, pedestrians or danger spots more easily and more quickly. The adaptive high-beam assistant will be available from spring 2009.

Unlike conventional systems, which simply switch between dipped and main beam, the new Mercedes technology is adaptive, adjusting light yield in accordance with prevailing traffic situations. Dipped beam range can therefore be increased from around 65 meters to as much as 300 meters – without dazzling other road users. Should the system recognise oncoming traffic or vehicles ahead, it continuously adjusts headlamp range so that the headlamp cone falls in front of other road users. The high-beam assistant also takes steering angle into account, so that headlamps are dipped appropriately on tight corners. On empty and open roads, the system gently switches to high beam.

Practical tests have shown that the adaptive high-beam assistant significantly enhances the safety of motorists when driving in the dark. Despite oncoming traffic, pedestrian dummies positioned at the edge of the road were recognized at a distance of around 260 meters — approximately 150 meters earlier than with conventional dipped beam lighting. The new Mercedes assistant therefore offers a more than two-fold safety bonus.

In addition, the system helps relieve the burden on car drivers: since it is no longer necessary to operate the lever on the steering column, full concentration can be given to driving. Once activated, the adaptive high-beam assistant will always automatically provide the optimum headlamp range.

According to the latest studies, the main beam is switched on for approximately just eight percent of journeys at night on average.

I can see this being beneficial in many ways, especially to oncoming motorists. But what would the effects be for the driver who is constantly seeing the headlight pattern in front of him change.

I agree, it may be something to get used to. But one of my biggest pet peeves is when other motorists have their high beams on without even knowing it, leaving me blinded and po'd. It's too bad it's always people in really old or economy cars, so it won't actually fix my problem.

Nevertheless, it's a pretty neat idea.

Yeah, pushing the stalk forward or backward is such a burden when driving at night.

Every manufacturer is trying to bake safety into their products. Things don't get better if you never change... even if you have some hiccups along the way. I don't understand how that can be confused with "trying to be cool". This isn't high-school.

Good idea, but it only computerizes something we can already do on our own, while adaptive lighting that turns around corners actually does something that we cant do on our own.

I have adaptive front lighting but i have yet to be on a back road at night to really 'test' its advantages...

I didn't realize the Speed3 had adaptive lighting.

Drive on some backroads in Vermont with your high beams on and you will see how well the technology works.

No... this system apparently has a continuous adaptive system that allows the light to changed variably between normal low and high beams. It isn't merely high-beam on and off.

I got mine Mercedes E-class with Xenon-ILS for 20 months ago, been driving 175000 km als an taxi (mostly country) until today. Many gadgets in the system that I don`t used, ex: fogmode when the left lowbeam pointed more left. Following curvelights are most helpful when you drive on and of the motorvay. But the lowbeam in motorvay mode are very good, you hardly se when i shifts, you just noticed that is a remakably good lowbeam, stretching far forward. So good that when you switched to highbeam you hardly noticed any better lights. Therefore have I replaced the halogen bulbs in the highbeamlamps to xenon too. Goosh! Now truckers flashes with their lights before they meet me. I think Mercedes are on the right way!
