2010 Acura TL SH-AWD 6MT First Drive - it beats S4 and 335 on track
The unceasing risk inherent to benchmarking your competition is that they have smart, creative folks all working just as hard to improve their products. The brass ring on the sport sedan ride is one of the most highly coveted in the world, and it's also the fastest-moving ride there is.

A Day of Reckoning

We are compelled to admit that this was an Acura event that took place at a facility owned by Honda (overseen by the Transportation Research Center) with all the test cars supplied and prepped by Acura R&D. It's not exactly our usual comparison format, in other words. This was our opportunity to drive a prototype of the 2010 Acura TL Super Handling All-Wheel Drive six-speed manual transmission (SH-AWD 6MT), so Acura arranged some track time at its test facility near its U.S. engineering facility in Ohio, and a competitive set of sport sedans.

The competitor cars each featured a manual transmission, the sportiest configuration currently available, and aftermarket brake pads that would stand up to an afternoon on the racetrack. The cars included a 2008 Audi S4 Quattro manual; 2008 BMW 335i Sport; 2008 BMW 335xi Sport and a 2008 Infiniti G35s.

We'd go out, run one lap, two hot laps and one cool-down in lap. Then we'd come in and switch cars with our press colleagues and repeat until all five cars were sufficiently flogged. We repeated the round robin twice and were given the opportunity to revisit any two or three cars we thought we hadn't had enough time in.

The 2010 Acura TL SH-AWD 6MT kicked serious butt. And we're not talking tenths of a second on a 1.6-mile racetrack, but instead 2 seconds (a light-year on a short racetrack like this) separated the TL from the next quickest sedan, the Audi S4 Quattro, on the challenging Dynamics Handling Course. This Alan Wilson-designed, 13-corner course is a laboratory instrument, and it dissected the strengths and weaknesses of these five cars with an array of fast/slow, compressed/unweighted, opening/closing corners.

too bad it compared it with the 'old' S4, because the new one already obsoletes it. The new A4 platform will have much better weight distribution, a more dynamic AWD system, a more responsive engine and improved suspension. I test drove the new model and it rocks.

Sorry, Ugly-ra, but you are already obsolete... at least compared to the Audi. It seems that BMW still has work to do - which I'm sure will quickly surpass the ugly TL.

Oh my god Acura absolutely destroyed the competition!

1st Place: Acura TL - not the most powerful in the group but carves corners like it's on rails. Beats everybody else by 2 seconds on a short track!

2nd Place: Audi S4 Quattro - most powerful but nose heavy, lots of understeer, bad weight distribution.

3rd Place: Feels surprisingly slow compared to TL and A4. The throttle response was snappy only in the rpm range, steering feels indirect and slow. Lazy reaction time.

4th Place: BMW 335xi - heavier and worse than the standard 335i. Even slower response to throttle input. Steering even less direct, more understeer.

5th Place: G35 - mediocre effort, tail happy and bit twitchy on the track, shifter should be improved to help put down better numbers.

If Acura is topping the 3 and G35 on the track, maybe its not dead yet (styling is a whole other story). But will buyers be looking at track reviews or the hideous grill?

I wish they had published full lap times and performance charts for the cars. I'm also a little skeptical that a FWD based AWD car with 58% of its weight over the front wheels could outhandle the near perfect 50/50 335i.

The car mags are getting better and better with their reviews(sarcasm).

I said it many times before, if you want the truth go and test drive the cars you are interested in yourself. The American car mags especially are the ultimate joke.

And this trend that completely leaves aside all the other characteristics of the cars compared, by only focusing on the numbers obtained on a track, is absurd.

Even if you buy a car with the intent to use it on the track(which very, very few people do), the actual lap time is less important then the amount of fun you have while driving a certain car.

This Acura TL is just another painfully boring sedan made by Honda that is over-hyped by some tools who write whatever they are told to in their reviews.
The commentary on each car are so vague that is hard to believe that something like this gets published.
Edmunds completely SUCKS!

Let me state...no manufacturer has built or can build a rear wheel drive sedan or coupe that can outperform a 335 without having to rely on super-sophisticated electronics and all-wheel drive systems. While I give a high thumbs up for the sophistication in their Engineering, I'm still impressed on what many German cars can accomplish without resorting to such tactics. In the end there is nothing we can do however...that is simply the nature of the game. Soon there will be no arguments about who has the better handling car as it will be about who has the better software. When all that matters is seconds on a clock...then it really doesn't matter what you drive...as long as it gets you there first. R.I.P Auto Enthusiast...your days are numbered. Soon every car will be equipped with an R2D2 like device to do the driving for you so you can get that 1/10th of second advantage!...whoopee!

I don't remeber any RX-7 or stock Supra doing what the GT-R did to Porsche (et al) so lets not get ahead of ourselves. And, I might add that if BMW, Audi, Mercedes and Porsche were to apply "super-sophisticated" handling systems to their already great handling cars then there probably will be another bechmark set that will bring us closer to cars that take most of the driving away from the driver! One thing I've noticed about the Japanese is that they don't care about the connection between car and driver...they just care about winning. I guess in most people's eyes that's all that matters

Edmunds fails to mention that the BMW's were both fitted with the active steering option (which pretty much every review says to skip).

An interesting quote on this from C&D:
"Another revelation was that the BMWs, both equipped with optional active steering, have less than satisfactory steering feel. Perhaps Acura is using those cars for their benchmark, because the TL’s electric power steering has better weight but is notable for its distinct lack of communication with the driver.

Compared to the TL, the BMW is still the benchmark for balanced handling. At almost every point on the track, either 3-series is perfectly neutral and very responsive to driver inputs. But—surprise, surprise—the TL is quicker around the track than any of the other cars."

With the release of the AWD TL a month away, a 6 cyl TSX coming next year along with a 4 cyl deisel option, a big luxo cruiser for the RL, a new coupe (hopefully with conv. option), and a new X6 competitor, Acura seems ready to challenge a market they haven't really played in for a while (if ever). Most know that I sell Acuras for a comfortable living. With that said, I don't know what to think of this new grill design. Most of the clients I serve seem to have no issue with them. But I also know what MOST people are comparing my cars to and they are not the high end German products (once again,,, MOST people....not all). Camrys, Avalons, Maximas, and even Passats are what I hear the most. And with a Ford/LIncoln company right next door, even some of their products. Acura really has to step up the IMAGE of their brand, because as SOME of you who have seen and DRIVEN our products can attest, they do make some serious contenders in the market. With some dealers sending their BRAND NEW cars to their painters to paint the grill,,,,I think you have a serious design issue. The 6 speed has always been a hell of a driver's car (even with FWD) and has offered an exceptional value for the market. I just don't know if Acura has what it takes to take it to the next level what with that front end. I do have to admit that when I did see it in person, it was a lot less (what's the word I'm looking for....ah) overwhelming as in the picures. And seriously guys, get inside this thing because it has some state of the art features and one heck of a stereo.

sorry for the rant.....but when HONDA tries to pull a fast one as they did with this "TEST". Wow,,,,compare cars that won't even be knew when your car hits the streets....Cmon

It is not “a fast one”. There is not much lending of 2009 or 2010 model prototypes between car companies for testing going on in 2008, this prototype performance test can only be done against present or past comparable models. This practice is not exclusive to Honda; all car companies have done it and will continue to do it.

Of course it is. How dare I ever think any Audi could possibly do anything better than any BMW? Silly me.

True sports cars are NOT fwd and since I don't like torque steer I would never consider the Acura no matter what numbers they come up with in tests. I have a 335i (with the 6-MT) but would consider the Audi (or even a G8). It's the fun to drive quotient coupled with every day drivability and reliability that matters most to me. Not someone else's numbers and opinions.
