The best nav system from Mercedes yet? A closer look-Part 1

The new R-class will sport the latest incarnation of the Mercedes DVD-based nav system.


Although still not at the level of Acura, Nissan and Infiniti, the upgrade encorporates a few new features and interface enhancements.

The new 'trail' feature is handy that drops electronic crumbs on the screen for when you are off road and need to find your way back.

I have the "old" version on my 2004 430S and this "new & improved" edition doesn't look much different to me! The Mercedes NAV system continues to be my greatest disappointment. It is so complicated and user un-friendly that is down right dangerous to use while driving.

How many more years before M-B can match the Japanese? Lexus had touch-screen controls in 1998 LS400 as an option. In Auto terms, nine model years is an incredibly long time to catch up - and M-B still hasn't.

Why did this article merit a place in Autospies newsletter if not as a promotional tool for M-B?

All automotive nav suppliers should take a look at the user interface and services that are offered by industry leaders, such as Garmin, to learn why the other guy leads and thy built-in nav is a distant second at best.
