Toyota iQ officially makes 67-hp and gets 55 mpg

Here it is - Toyota today showed the final production version of the much-anticipated Toyota iQ minicar. Not only that Toyota is taking orders now with delivers to begin as early as January 2009 in Europe where Toyota plans to sell 80,000 units annually.

Let’s get to the specs. Power comes from a 1.0L VVT-i 3-cylinder petrol engine capable of 67-hp with a maximum torque of 67 lb-ft. Don’t even ask us about the 0 to 60 mph on the iQ, however combined with a 5-speed manual transmission, the iQ returns an impressive 65.7 mpg (55 mpg in U.S. terms).

Pricing information has not yet been released.

ok, lets see. 55 mpg in the IQ with 67 hp. Or 59 mpg with 120 hp in the Audi A4 diesel... you decide.

The all Electric Smart car blows this out of the water. Neither are on sle yet but will be competing side by side very soon.

Personally I think the smart will be more reliable, these cars have already been tried and true and have been on sale in europe for years.

That's horrible.

The Smart gets awful mileage for what it does but with only 67hp this should still get better MPG.

Let's not forget higher insurance costs for the Audi, Audi's reliability record vs. Toyota's and the price tag.

You guys are unbelievable hypocrites. One second you bash hybrids for costing more money than their gasoline equivlaents then you try to compare a micro car to something that probably costs twice as much if not more?!

Small cars with small petrol engines never offer the kind of super MPG that people may expect - the aerodynamics don't give good highway MPG, which is why people use them as city cars. I have a 1.4, 75hp VW Lupo, and I would never see more than 50 mpg. I don't expect it though, as city MPG is comparitively good.

I can't see why people are complaining, this is a city car, not a cruiser. 55 MPG is great. It will be slow though, I'd guess around 14 seconds to 60.
