With its all-new A4, Audi has pulled off a rare hat trick -- producing a car that's bigger, faster, and more fuel efficient.

Powering the Brilliant Red 2009 Audi A4 2.0 T quattro Tiptronic through our battery of instrumented flogging was a heavily massaged version of Audi's 2.0L mill that's become a staple of the Volkswagen Group parts bin. The engine has undergone numerous incremental improvements, the biggest of which being the addition of Audi's valve-lift system.

Audi's powertrain brains developed the valve lift system in order to allow for variable control of the exhaust valves, improving the engine's charge cycle, according to the automaker.

Amping-up the charge cycle helped the engineers to increase torque and bring it on earlier, lifting the engine's lb-ft of torque to 258 @ 1500 rpm (vs. 207 @ 1800 rpm for the outgoing engine). Horsepower is also up (now 211 vs. 200). Interestingly, the 2.0L's torque figure is slightly greater than the 2009 A4's optional 3.2L V-6 engine (listed at 243 lb-ft and 265 hp). So why would we want the six again?

I just did spec out a 328i with similiar packaging (standard paint, sport, premium, nav, heated seats, Xenon, PDC,,etc.) and I didn't even find active steering yet before going over $47k. It looks like the days of cheap premium cars are over - I still remember when an M3/S4 started in the 46K range. With that said, manufacturers in that segment have new entry level cars like A3 or the 1 Series.

yeah thats crazy, especially for the 4 cyl from a 17,000 car.....at least the 328 uses the same inline six as other BMW cars, and at that price every other car would also have a 6 at 46 grand you could get alot more car, and alot better sports sedan, since from the review this still isnt a sports sedan.....

M35MT: Yeah, I completely forgot to compare it to a 328xi. But seriously, I would buy the Audi if I needed AWD and the BMW if I didn't. Oh, and about that cylinder count comment: It's the total package that counts including torque, bhp, drivability, quality & finish, etc. Following the bmwdrvr "logic", the Pontiac G8 would be better than the 328 because it has even more cylinders - but then again, you can't argue with someone who is biased to begin with, right?

bmwdrvr quit hating on Audi..it's not the same engine, who say it's "for" a $17,000 car...name the VW that is $17,000 with any 2.0T, I'll run down and buy one right now. The 2.0T in the new A4 is quite different in technology & output than the previous versions & current versions in transverse applications. Yeah every Audi borrows everything from the cheaper VW, grow up....

The BMW 2.0T in the A4 has almost as much hp & a lot more torque than the 3.0 in the BMW 328i. The argument that the 6 cylinder is better than the 4 just because it has more cylinders is ridiculous.

How un-biased of you....

BMW could have strapped a turbo on one of their "low end" four cylinders, or lexus could did have the same with the corollas engine, in the IS, its a feat that the A4 has the GTI's engine....hating on them....i just think its a waste of money. There isnt a 4 cylinder in this class at all.....and despite Audis sad commercial turbo 4 would put it a step below these 6 cylinder cars and with the base saab 9-3, S40, and TSX.....not more lofty 6 cylinder luxury sedans....I wonder everyone would say if Toyota gave us a turbo 4 in the IS from the corolla, and the G came with a turbo version of the sentras engine....lol....stop

its not the cylinders that matter...but the fact that for 46 grand you are stepping into pretty high numbers for an economy cars engine...people would scoff and taunt if Lexus took the corollas engine put a turbo on it and charged this much...same with nissan and the sentras engine, but your BIAS saids that it will be ok as long as its Audi...what a joke

yes, I've driven all versions of the car with the 2.0T, it's a great engine....

so I didn't see you explain what was wrong with a more powerful, more fuel efficient 4 cyl vs the base V6, besides "what would people say".

what economy car are you refering to? I know you like to try to tie every Audi product to the VW Rabbit, but I wouldn't call the GTI an economy car, and the A4 version of the 2.0T has around 10hp and 40 ft/lbs of torque more.

Did you get molested as a young boy by an Audi owner? that or your a typical 15yo fanboi, those can be the only expainations of you r attitude.

Anyways keep it coming, it's great...really. You're doing a fabulous job...

BMW and Mercedes offer 4 cylinder engines in Europe, the Audi 2.0T is no exception. There are even lower engines, like the 1.8T.

$47k is fully loaded

55/45% front to rear weight distribution quite good for fwd car.

quattro biased 40% front, 60% rear is also pretty good.

for me the deal breaker is "its not a sports sedan, but a sporty sedan".

Its still nice though--i would get it only with the s-line package though (don't think its available in the US).

I think the G35 redesign was more boring. I know it's an awesome car but the exterior doesn't do anything for me compared to the last gen.

The new A4 is a pretty big improvement, have you seen it in person? It only took minor revisions to make it one of the sexiest cars in its class.

Why? At this point the A4 is nearly as roomy inside and you would have a loaded A4 as opposed to a pretty basic A6 that is less fun to drive.

fear that the mainstream buyer will complain since it's not as smooth as a traditional automatic, Audi is working on improving their JD power ratings & theat could be a possible reported "problem". Maybe after the initial release in the S4, which I hope happens here, the S-tronic will catch on more.

Yeah... We will see the new seven-speed S-tronic in the US when the new S4 debuts. They're deluding themselves if they think it's not good for our market. Not everyone may want a performance car but it doesn't have to be driven like one. Not to mention, it improves fuel efficiency, which everyone DOES want these days.
