2009 Volkswagen Golf GTI comes to Paris with 5-doors

When we saw the reveal of the 2009 Volkswagen Golf GTI earlier week it only had 3-doors and the word ‘concept’ attached to it. Now at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, Volkswagen has dropped the word ‘concept’ and attached two extra doors.

The 2009 Volkswagen Golf GTI will come to the U.S. in October 2009 and will be only offered as a 3-door since we’re not special enough here on the stateside to have an extra set of doors. Nonetheless, we still get to push the 207-hp 2.0L 4-cylinder TSI engine - and we still got to go from 0 to 62 mph in 7.2 seconds. Oh, and we still get to average a fuel-economy of 31 mpg.

Pricing for the new Golf GTI will be announced closer to launch.

Too much disparity between the GTI and R32.

7.2 sec to 60 ho-hum quickness vs. the very quick, awd and expensive R32.

VW is, as usual, underrating its time. The GTI will get from 0-60mph in the mid six second range.

Also, you have to keep in mind that this car isn't all about straight line speed. It will be probably be the best-handling GTI yet. Nobody really complains that the MINI Cooper S isn't super-fast because it has amazing handling; this car will be the same way.

0-100kpm 0-62 is different than 0-60 !!! Also DGS is fair bit quicker than stick shift.

As S$ said VW figures are very conservative, DSG cars are in mid 6's 0-60.

I have had 2 GTI's (2006/08) both DSG, I cannot remember doing proper 0-60 time. BUT I can tell you the GTI is plenty fast enough to have a lot of fun and get into serious trouble with your licence if you are not careful. (I have had fun but no law problems!)

As a GTI fan I sure hope that this new generation sets new standards for handling because on horsepower and acceleration I don't think it's as impressive/competitive as it could be.
