New 2013 Baby Porsche

Rumours are rife that VW is currently developing a new small rear wheel drive roadster to compete with the Mazda MX-5 and if it is given the production go ahead; both Audi and Porsche could end up with their own version.

The replacement to today’s second generation Audi TT, due in 2013 could well adopt this platform. By moving the TT to rear wheel drive, it would join the BMW Z4, Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class and the Porsche Boxster which are all powered through the rear wheels.

Now UK based Car magazine are speculating that Porsche may also choose to use the platform to create a spiritual successor to the classic 356 or the 914 which was manufactured between 1969 and 1976...

The new 370Z will be able to beat Cayman, as demonstrated by GT-R, so it's in totally different performance level.

a VW Miata is possible, but I don't believe there will be a baby Porsche, as there won't be enough differentiation from Cayman regarding performance and price.

No Porsche is in direct competition with a Nissan. The Cayman competes with the BMW Z4 M Coupe, Lotus Europa and Mercedes SLK, in other words premium brands.

I love Porsche to death but they must create another model that is in between the 911 and the Carrera GT because the Carrera GT was fabulous piece of engineering. Porsche has so much potential in creating a car that can run with the V8 Vanage, F430, and Gallardo market and I hope one day they make that choice to do so. They shouldn't waste time on a baby Porsche. My two cents.

Porsche doesn't think its in direct competition with Nissan. But clearly, Nissan has its sights set on Porsche performance as its benchmark.

Keep beating them at their game for half the price and all of a sudden why pay more.....

The key will be to see how the GT-R's hold up over 3 years and 50k miles.

porsche are classics.. gt-r's will be another tin in the bin. its crazy performance though i love the car!!! its only awesome now. in 20 years the gt-r will not be in any museums and thats the truth believe that.

So Porsche is making a roadster to compete with mainstream ones. So you will have the MX-5, SKY / Solstice, Porsche???

I personally never put the MX-5 in line with the TT, Z4, those are luxury sport roadsters that are cheaper in most respects than a Boxster. So if Porsche is making a cheaper Boxter to compete with those, or going after the mainstream market, that needs to be cleared up first.

IF Porsche were smart they won't jump into a "mainstream" market. It will always be a premium brand no matter what.

The baby Porsche would not compete with the 370Z because it would have a 4 cylinder engine. Because of economies of scale the baby Porsche would have to priced just above Audi who should be price just above VW. So if VW has a starting price of say 23 grand,Audi should be at 28 grand and Porsche should be at 31 grand. The new 370Z I'm guessing will start at about 36 grand.Further to keep rices in check the options should be limited. For this platform to sell I think it needs to be in this price range. I also think VW should build this at their plant in the US.

Porsche nickels and dimes the customer to death by charging extra for everything including some paint colors. They can't get away with that in the lower segment or these target customers will simply buy a Mazda 3 or Ford Focus which will be fancier by the time the baby Porsche arrives.
