Ford Ka being reconsidered for the U.S.

FoMoCo showed the world its new Ford Ka minicar at the 2008 Paris Motor Show last week. At the time we were pretty sure that soon enough, we’ll hear news of Ford considering bringing the Ka to the U.S. Today, on a Detroit radio station WJR’s “Paul W. Smith Show” CEO Alan Mulally said that with the increase in demand for small cars, FoMoCo is revisiting its decision not to bring the Ka to the stateside.

The new Ford Ka will go on sale in Europe starting later this year. Two powertrain choices will be offered including a 1.2L Duratec petrol that produces 69-hp...

Why it takes Ford a calamity like the near end of their existence to figure out right from wrong still amazes me.

I've always thought that Ford should use their European models to recreate the Mercury brand. As it stands Mercury is dead in the water if they continue with this rebadging of already slow-selling North American Ford models. They need a fresh start, pretty much like what GM is doing with Saturn. Bring over four or five European models and badge them as Mercuries. The increased cost of the importation or tooling could be easily justified in Mercuries where they are expected to be a bit more expensive than Fords anyway. I say bring it over as a Mercury and start the revolution...with a diesel option too!

Bring offshore Fords to the motherland! (US/CAN). North America desperately needs the Mondeo. With the Mondeo in US/CANADA they will sell like hotcakes!
