I agree that Porsche's racing history is irrelevant. We are not discussing heritage, we are discussing an alleged technical achievement by Nissan. Without a doubt Nissan's racing achievements are NOTHING compared to Porsche's and will likely NEVER match it (Porsche has an insurmountable lead).

Sure the GT-R is legendary, but only in Japan and other Asian events were they did not compete against Porsches, Ferraris and the like.

The GT-R's Nurburgring lap time, IMO, is still clouded by the fact that Nissan has not been able to provide consistent numbers of HP. Have they been clever enough to provide souped up GT-Rs for comparison purposes and bland GT-Rs for production? I have not been convinced of this fact.

Porsche needs to be very careful in pushing this issue because if a neutral party tests Porsche's best against the GT-R and the times are proven correct their reputation will be destroyed. If Porsche is proven right, you can expect the pricing of the GT-R to drop like a brick overnight.

STAR - the 300zx sold more in '91 that 968 sold in it's entire lifecycle!
As for the Z being out of production for 20 years, it was actually still produced in Japan until August 2000, making it out of production for only 2 years.... know your facts before making statements.

Porche 911 Turbo 0-60 is 3.4s w/o launch control.
Nissan GT-R 0-60 is 4.0s w/o launch control.
Nissan GT-R 0-60 is 3.3s w/ launch control.

So basically the most obvious improvement for the 911 is launch control seeing that the Nissan needs it to match 0-60

Second Porsche improvement is enhanced stability control and proper weight management. They probably can't do much with Cd numbers w/o drastically altering the look of the car. The 911 by virtue of its rear weight bias is the car's only disadvantage when it comes to handling...so do more to negate that weakness.

Third Porsche improvement...just make the car lighter!

That's it not much homework for Porsche to do considering the time and effort that was put into the GT-R in the first place.

TurboSpyder - you are a crybaby and missed the whole point. Porsche has racing blood since its inception. Nissan was built for the mass, people like us. If you want good comparison between Nissan and German car, pick Volkswagen (auto for folks?). Porsche is pissed because with its racing blood, it is losing to Nissan in track and in technology (i.e. dual-clutch, turbo lag, etc.) If we pit Nissan GT-R all modified and put in touring events, we will know who is the winner.

The worse part is the even when Porsche apologizes / acknowledges results, Star will not shut up.

What you don't understand is that outside the performance figures the GT-R has nothing in common with a Porsche. Porsche doesn't offer you only specs like the GT-R, Porsche offers you the TOTAL package.

It is obvious that Nissan overrated(as usual)their performance figures but even if they were real, that doesn't make up for all the shortcomings related to the GT-R. This is not the first attempt by an econo brand to try to compare their cars with the real thing but eventually the hype died and cars like Honda/Acura NSX, Nissan 300 ZX, Toyota Supra are remembered only as failed attempts to challenged the European car engineering. The hype around the GT-R will eventually die off too because there is nothing substantial about this car. It looks cheap, it sounds cheap and is almost as boring to drive as a Camry when driven around town. Just remember that I was the one telling you that.

No one here can prove the GT-R did not have a non-production setup. Nissan's "offering" of proof is a JOKE although it has made Porsche look stupid. This kind of proof, after-the-fact and without any independent authority that can verify it would NEVER stand in any court of law and will only convince fanboys that don't think with their heads.

I'm not close minded to think a GT-R could never beat a Porsche regardless of heritage, but there are too many questions unanswered to make any intelligent conclusions. The bottom line is, the comparo GT-Rs need to be validated against true production models by an INDEPENDENT authority that tests both 911s and GT-R with the best drivers available for each car.

I've always liked GT-Rs and if they turn out to be a better car, then so be it. Porsche DOES need to refresh their styling anyway, I've always had that criticism about them. With that said I do think the 911 styling is still much nicer than the GT-R.

I would find that incredibly hard to believe.If in fact that was the case then you would have to make the same case against "all" car makers. I don't have a problem with the GT-R. In fact, I am glad that Nissan built it for all the boy racers out there. Like I said before the GT-R is in the $70K range what EVO and STI use to be in $30K range.

Nissan gives you the fastest car you can buy for 70K and even if the shortcomings are obvious they can certainly be overlooked by a certain type of buyer.

The GT-R is no doubt a fast car for the money, but is in no way a Porsche competitor.

Nissan never claimed that it wants GT-R to be Porsche its direct competitor. Nissan used Porsche as the automaker to beat in terms of performance. If Nissan is to compete with Porsche directly, Nissan would have priced its GT-R at $130K range with all kinds of bells and whistle.

Just a couple of things: I’ve said this before but I no longer consider Porsche to be a car manufacturer with “pure” aspirations. In fact, I wouldn’t doubt that Porsche has a GT-R in their Stuttgart chop-shop reverse engineering the thing as I write this. Make no mistake, with the acquisition of VW, Porsche will eventually become another car company. In some ways Porsche is already there with the Panamera and Cayenne. Merc went down this path back in the early nineties when they started building modular engines. Soon afterwards, Merc adopted this philosophy for manufacturing or their entire line up. Porsche has a celebrated past but let’s remember that it took a couple of ex-Toyota consultants to save Porsche from extinction back in the early 90’s. Porsche adopted Japanese “lean” practices that put them back in the black. When talking about Porsche, I wouldn’t make racial remarks about the Japanese when Japanese manufacturing practices are what saved Porsche.

Porsche's GT-R had something over 3,000 miles on the odometer. Its tires were in tatters. The brakes were terminally toasted. None of the fluids had been changed. Mizuno inquired whether the transmission had been recalibrated following the recommended 1,200-mile break-in procedure as specified in the owner's manual. It had not. Mizuno provided new tires and new brakes, changed the fluids and recalibrated the transmission. And then he carefully explained the driving techniques that are required to help the GT-R do its best (as a former race engineer in charge of Nissan's effort at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, he knows his stuff) and sent them on their way.

The point is while Porsche is an excellent company and excellent engineering firm if they are going to make an accusation like this and consider it vitally important then they have to submit to an independent test for both cars. This has never been done before but perhaps then this has to become the norm so 1 company cannot make unsubtantiated claims over another. The problem is that any company making claims about setting records at the ring will then have to pay for this independent test to validate what they say. What will probably end up happening is that companies will stop disclosing lap times as to not be enbroiled up in having to proove it.So ultimately this can hurt companies like Porsche,Nissan etc. that are touting the performance envelope.

This is a silly debate and has been for the longest time. Porsche is one of the most respectable brands in the world. Nissan is first and foremost and econo-company. GT-R is the best Nissan will ever have to offer, nothing in its lineup is even worth mentioning, not even the upcoming 370z. GT-R is stealing the show for Nissan.

The only fair solution (which most of you must of thought of already), is to have Top Gear's Stig's parents go back in time, and produce twins instead of just the one Stig.

Fast forward to this week and the twin Stigs (raised to maturity with equal driving opportunities) are unleashed on the Nurburgring: Stig-1 in a GTR and Stig-2 in the 911 Turbo.

There! An easy, logical way to prove which car's better.

Correction: which car is...FASTER. We already know Porsche is the better car.

The BTTF De Lorean could be repurposed for Stig's folks.

Seems to me that whenever this happens it can only be good for all (enthusiasts) concerned. People like the cars they like, and drive what they like and can afford. But whatever happens to improve the lap times of some cars generally works to improve them all. Dont think that the other japanese makes dont have a couple of GTR's apart on the floor right now, Italians too.

The 911 is an icon. The GTR will become another Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 or Toyota Supra. Not saying that's all bad, just saying it ain't the same. Sorry.

Porsche is likely disassembling the GT-R right now, which is fine Nissan likely did the same on the Porsche 911 as part of GT-R research and development. This however will not solve Porsche problems since a new engine 550 hp is being developed for the 2010 GT-R.
