2010 Bmw X1 to receive both AWD and RWD transmission

After revealing the X1 Concept at the Paris Motor Show, Bmw will release the new model to the markets in 2010 in two versions: four-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive. The rear drive version will be powered with four-cylinder 2.0-liter petrol or diesel engines, at choice.

To make a differentiation between the two versions, the rear drive model will get a new “sDrive” badge. This will also be remarked in the name of the model, which will be the Bmw X1 18isDrive. The four wheel drive version will receive turbocharged four or six cylinder engines with an upgraded version of Bmw’s 2.0-liter turbo common rail diesel which is capable of 220 hp. The X1 is based on the same platform like 3-Series and will be produced in the Bmw’s Leipzig plant in Germany.

This just makes it extremely stupid. Anyone who buys a RWD X1 should be slapped across the face for not getting a RWD 3 Series wagon.

I understand, but something tells me this car won't be very high off the road.

BTW, that's a very dumb reason to sacrifice drivability, fuel efficiency and ease of ingress/egress.

It will barely sacrifice anything. And it also gives you extra things with the hieght such as not worrying too much about touching the ground etc in different driving conditions.
