Cadillac Gives Us 556 Reasons to Drive The CTS-V Over the BMW M5, Audi S6 or Mercedes E63 – But Will You Buy The Argument?

When will the horsepower war end?

Perhaps the better question is how much horsepower, is too much horsepower?

I don’t know about you but for me I would answer those questions as follows…

Hopefully the horsepower war will not end, each and every generation has brought more power that I see as a good thing.  As far as too much horsepower, is it really possible to have too much horsepower, I think not.

Cadillac has set sights on the BMW M5, Audi S6 and Mercedes-Benz E63 in their quest to own the crown, if only for a season in the super sedan segment.

Yeah, I know that the CTS-V is priced closer to the M3, C63 and IS-f than the bigger sedans, but in terms of size, the Cadillac is better compared to the larger offerings from the Germans.

And saving a ton of money in the process just serves as further incentive to choose the Cadillac.

But is it enough?  Has Cadillac produced a car capable of running with the best from Germany?

More importantly, we know the CTS-V is capable of running with the big boys, but are you willing to give it a chance and consider purchasing the Cadillac over the more expensive Germans?

I’ll be perfectly honest with you; I am rooting for the CTS-V.  It would be nice to have the hometown team win a contest or two.

Perhaps with all the economic news that inundates us daily as the stock market swings up and down, we could call the Cadillac the Recession Busting Super Car.  If cash is king, the CTS-V sure does leave a lot of it in your pocket when cross-shopped against the M5, S6 and E63.

So tell us if you think Cadillac has what it takes to run with the Germans, and while you are making your arguments be sure to tell us which car would get your hard earned dollars.

As a current AMG owner, I would seriously consider this vehicle as my next purchase.

My hesitation would stem from this car's tremendous appetite for fuel (I've often thought about trading down to something more efficient) and the resale value. Previous generation CTS-V's are selling for a song.

That being said, this car represents a fantastic performance value.

i would take the cadillac over those mentioned above but if you throw the rs6 into the equation instead of the s6 that's a whole different ball game.

I think it's a huge credit to Cadillac to even be in the running much less being seriously considered as the top of the heap. It wasn't too long a go that Cadillac, like Lincoln, was wallowing in over sized, softly sprung land yachts.

I hope GM does well with these serious efforts to refine their product (Corvette, Malibu, G*, et al) and bring them up again to world class standards. I'd buy a CTS V in the wink of an eye.

The horsepower bubble will go the way of the stock market and housing bubble, watch this space. The number of people able to buy these cars is dropping fast, couple the +/- 15 mpg real world economy, and it will not be too long before this bubble comes to an end.

You can see why Audi is "downsizing" the next S4 to a V6 it will appeal to a wider market with a good performance/economy mix.

The cts-v i think attempt at fighting these cars, and from reviews Ive read it sounds pretty good. I think that it will certainly takesales away from some people, its refined, powerful, good looking, and very fast. On a side note I really dont think the S6 should even be mentioned here, performance power wise its no where near this crowd, in fact the 550i, and E550 have performance that would match or beat in some cases the V10 powered S6, while the V8 they offer is slower than the 535i, and not that good. no logic

You are right in regards to the Audi S6. In a comment on an earlier thread, I had mentioned the RS6, along with the M5 and E63 AMG, as one of the vehicles the CTS-V was targeting. However, I had MEANT to type "RS6" but ACTUALLY typed "S6" - a typo. LOL.

However, in hindsight the RS6 is not going to be imported to the U.S., unless Audi changes its mind. If the RS6 is not coming here, the S6, is definintely underpowered in comparison with the other cars.

That said, if class-leading acceleration is not your only priority, the S6 would definitely be worth checking out.

P.S. - I'm curious about your statement that the 535i can outaccelerate the S6. Can you give me the URl of the site that compared these two cars?

you may want to re read my post as I said the 535i, and many other 6 cylinder cars come to think of it are faster than the poorly performing V8 powered A6 I said the 550i and E550 are as fast and in some cases faster than the V10 powered S6

Please prove that, because that is an all out lie.....recent test have proved the M5 will outpace the RS6 on the track, and many tests have proven the S6 is far underpowered, and alot slower than the e63 and M5 nice try and just throwing random facts, you guys clutch on to anything that puts the underdog brandin the same league

If you're going to compare last model CTS-V's, then look at what happened to the last model (insert your favorite car here) when the newere, better model car was released. DROP!

It sold for 52% depreciation in 2+ years. Fact. Deal with it. M's drop in value like any other normal car. Here is your current "market" then, 14 of 35 (40% listed) current model M5's going for less than 50% of sticker available, and not ONE bid/buyer for more than $52,000 on any M5 including 2008 models. I excluded the Hamann which has an offer for $67,000, which has got to be a huge loss of investment in and of itself.
