BMW and Mercedes Benz Reach Deal To Pool Purchasing Of Common Parts
BMW the world's largest premium carmaker, has reached a deal with arch rival Daimler  to pool their purchase of some car parts, BMW development chief Klaus Draeger told a German magazine.

"The use of economies of scale is successively being implemented. We do not need to wait for a model change or official announcements," he said in comments published by auto motor und sport.

generally, having standards is a good thing when it increases quality, allows for interchangability and lowers the price. We already know Bosch's diesel injection is used in just about everyone's engine, etc.

The only down side (and you all would expect me to see that part) would be, using of a common part now increases the commonality of a recall affecting multiple brands

No , we have three main suppliers of diesel injection ( common-rail ) systems - Denso ( pioneer , in 1995 first common-rail ) , Bosch and Delphi .

I think this could be a very good move for BMW, hopefully they can retain the sportiness aspect and gain some luxury or styling from this. Hopefully this will help eliminate some famous Mercedes lemons without hurting Mercedes appeal.
