Planned Attempt On World Land Speed Record HopesTo Better 1,000 MPH!

If it succeeds the Bloodhound SSC (super sonic car), unveiled at London's Science Museum Thursday, will travel at more than 1,000 mph -- or Mach 1.4 -- beating the existing low altitude record for aircraft of 994 mph.

The vehicle's driver will be wing commander Andy Green, a Royal Air Force fighter pilot, who set the current speed record of 763 mph with Thrust SSC in October 1997.

do people really care about this? Its a car u can't take on a track or street so what is the purpose to? to prove we can drive fast in a straight line in the middle of nowhere

Its not the who but the WHY. WHY in the hell would someone want to travel 1000+ MPH on "land" anyway??? It almost makes me nervous thinking about the top speed in a Bugatti!!! (well not really, that would be neat, but this is insane)

because its a challenge. Yeah, you might die in the process, but people have died doing considerably more pointless things, and if you make it though, you would be the only one on the planet that knows what it feels like to go 1000mph on land. To each their own.

It's all good fun and all, but at some point you'd just want to pull back on the stick.

I love cars, but planes > cars. Even the Ferrari P4 pales behind the SR-71 Blackbird.

I think Jeremy Clarkson said it best when talking about the Pagani Zonda and comparing it to an airplane. "In an F15, you dont get much sensation of speed, whereas in the Zonda, you do." Something about your butt being 3 inches from the ground makes speed so much more apparent.
