Chrysler Plans to Cut 25% Of Salaried Jobs by End Of The Year

The cuts will be completed by year's end, the Auburn Hills, Michigan-based company said today in an e-mailed statement. Chrysler, with 17,332 salaried employees as of Sept. 30, also said it plans more ``organizational and restructuring'' changes.

Today's retrenchment plan came a day after Chrysler said it would end 1,825 jobs by closing a sport-utility vehicle plant in Newark, Delaware, and chopping a shift at a Jeep plant in Toledo, Ohio. Chrysler is fighting a 25 percent decline in U.S. sales this year, the most of any major automaker.

``These are truly unimaginable times for our industry,'' Chief Executive Officer Robert Nardelli said in the statement. He said ``additional organizational and restructuring announcements'' are planned ``in the near future,'' without giving details.

If the govt wants to help our economy by helping the american car makers, they should start by filling the many open positions with the US gov't with these displaced employees. There giving these companies billions of dollars. It would be nice if they could use those billions to redeply these ppl in the american auto industry's pursuit of being a leader in fuel efficient and alternative fuel sourced vehicles

Even though this may save money for Chrysler in the short term with the the cash savings but will hurt them in the long run as there will be a good chance that the workers will boycott Chrysler brand vehicles. I know I would if a company did that to me.
