Video: Audi R8 driver loses control in the rain

OH NO! It looks like it wasn't bad enough to have seriously injured the driver but it sure was heartbreaking to see one of my favorite cars smash-up like that.

All I got to say is OUCH...........for the car LOL.

Thats why Audi sold not well in U.S.

Some AWD owners think that just because they can fully out accelerate others straight in the rain, they can also hit turns in the same way and not loose control. WRONG!

AWD is sometimes overrated. Really!

Overrated perhaps, but a safety advantage in every case.

Relatively high speed interstate travel in icy/freezing rain conditions, FWD is typically much safer than AWD.

As an engineer by training, I can say that the above comments by 1995e34 and shredmo are rubbish.

I agree with SHOWTIME and johannas. AWD is safer than FWD or RWD when it is snowing or raining. That said, that traction advantage does not give drivers of AWD/4WD vehicles to drive like maniacs in bad weather. During snowstorms or rainstorms, I've seen plenty of SUVs lying on their side in a ditch.

In addition, in a situation where all 4 wheels are on glare ice, NO drive system is safe.

In my FWD coupe, I have never experienced oversteer at appropriate highway speeds while driving in a straight line on glare ice. In my AWD Subaru I have experienced oversteer at appropriate highway speeds under these same conditions. Even the slightest unexpected oversteer at speeds greater than 30mph can be a safety risk, IMO.

FYI, they are both fitted with the same size, age and model Bridgestone tire.

Deep snow and water, I'd agree, it is nearly always a safety asset, provided the driver doesn't drive beyond their abilities.

In summary, I believe AWD is often, but not always a safety advantage over FWD. Then again, as an engineering civilian, I tend to avoid words such as always and never.

Trashing his hot car serves the idiot right. This was not a freeway crash. There are all sorts of cars parked along the left side of the road, plus several businesses. He was obviously travelling WAY too fast for that area. No sympathy from me.

you could have an 18 wheeler with 18-wheel drive, but if its on Z-rated tyres, its as good as rubber on ice...

Why do all the other plain jane vehicles seem to be doing well in the rain and the all wheel drive Audi is all over the place,things that make you go, HMMMM!

It's the driver, not the car. Are you that stupid? He would've crashed at that speed, in that weather, in just about any car.

Didn't some idiot crash his GTR this week, oh well birds of a feather.... AWD will always be better than 2wd, but it still can't prove Newton wrong.

Rule #1 slow down when it's wet. # 2 get all seasons or tires that perform better in the wet, rather than super high performance low profile summer tires #3 you can hydroplane @ 56 kmh

I am deeply sadden by your multiple postings and I can not fathom that anybody could keep posting such blatantly ignorant comments.
I can see only a few possibilities to such postings;
1- you are between the age of 12 and 16 years old and you know absolutely nothing about cars.
2- you are playing the devil advocate and purposely post the most radical comments you can come up with in order to create flame wars and outrage.
3- you really believe in BMW superiority and in this case I am really sorry for you, because such ignorance and arrogance are beyond any comprehension.
4- you might suffer from some brain damage or genetic disorder and therefore I am, and we all will be sorry for you and forgive your constantly ridiculous comments.

I do respect BMW as a brand and as a product, they do seem to have lost their edge and it is clear that "accounting" and "marketing" have a lot to say in how the product is being built.
Life is about making the right compromises, and if you are knowledgeable, educated and with the means, which vehicle is going to fit those compromises is for each their own. But to pompously push your favorite brand like you do is a little to much for this site sometimes.

Audi's R8 is the pinnacle of Audi engineering. So great in fact is the R8, that numerous magazines have chosen it over Porsche's 911 Turbo, Lamborghini's Gallardo, Aston Martin's DB8, Jaguar's XKR, Corvette's ZR1 and a host of other performance cars.
