Audi Launches Second "Meet the Beckers" Web Video - Entertaining? Yes. But Is It Effective Advertising? You Decide.

Audi Launches Second
Audi launched the second "Meet the Beckers" web video which chronicles a severely deranged family.  This episode shows two brothers out to purchase a turkey.  The Audi driving brother is smooth and intelligent while the brother who drives the BMW is made about out to be a complete idiot.

It is obvious why manufacturers are pursuing advertising of this nature.  For the most part it is less expensive than massive TV or print ad campaigns, and the ability to adapt to current events or topics makes the internet the perfect venue for such campaigns.

The Audi campaign is a little over the top with every stereotype thrown in for good measure, well except for the Audi driving folks, but is it effective?

Well here, watch the video and then decide...

I guess the question is this, after watching this video, are you grabbing your jacket and car keys with the intention of heading on over to your local Audi dealer to drive the new A4?  Sure you can try to argue that that is not the point of the video, but I would argue that it is exactly the point of the video.  Audi isn't investing money to not sell cars, it is all about selling cars.  And if you think the purpose is anything other than to sell cars, well lets just say for as big a tool as Audi has made the BMW driver out to be, the fact is if he walks through the showroom doors to buy an A4, they will sell him an A4.

Aside from a laugh or two at a bad joke, does this form of advertising work for you, and would you buy a car based on this kind of promotion?

A special thanks to reader tryme for the heads up on this video.

I think it is effective in that it attempts to develop an image for Audi drivers vs. drivers of the other brands. I also found myself laughing at least 4 times during each episode. Episode 1 is actually better than episode 2. Episode 1 will come up on the youtube link following episode 2.

It may be developing an image for Audi drivers, but is it an accurate image. I drive a BMW and my wife has an Audi, and trust me I don't fit either stereotype.

I guess the main question is, does this for of advertising compel one to purchase the car.

BMW did "The Hire" series of films several years back, but in almost all of them a focus on the performance of each car was wound around the story line. I just don't see that same level of immersion with these ads other than poking fun at drivers of other makes.

kthor - get overself! Audi doesn't want or need to be BMW because they are Audi. Obviouly once you see past your little propeller you too won't fit the stereotype either. The Hit was only brillant for little bimmer babies.

Jeremy Clarkson says that all the cocks now drive Audis.
Maybe Audi is trying to reinforce that perception?

The first "Meet the Beckers" video was very funny and in good taste. The second video was less so. The sexual banter between the two brothers while driving to the grocery store was "over the top" and crude.

"Elegant understatement" and "classy" are phrases commonly used by the automotive press to describe Audis. The same cannot be said of "Meet the Beckers - Part 2".

Sorry about that.

Actually Clarkson said some time ago that BMWs, not Audis, are all driven by cocks.

He might have changed his mind very recently, but I'm not aware of it.

It's also worth noting that Audis in the UK are like BMWs here. They're both ubiquitous there, but Audis sell even better than BMWs across the pond. It's a very different situation in the US.

True! I don't take these videos as advertising, but just as comedy. They're fun to watch, mostly the first one.

This form of advertising is difficult to gauge in terms of effectiveness. Nobody is going to say to their wife "Hey honey, I just saw this funny ad by Audi that really had very little to do with cars. Let's go get one." However, I think that somewhat subconsciously when you laugh at the Laguna Seca Blue joke Audi is putting their version of the BMW stereotype in your head.

Overall, probably not too effective. It is a nice break from the overly pompous ads by Audi, BMW, Porsche, Mercedes; it shows they have a sense of humor too.

Amazing...
You seem to have no problem stereotyping Audi owners as idiots, poor and uneducated. It must be quite unsettling for you to see how others perceive BMW owners!

Actually I think the creators of this crap are idiots. The BMW hire highlighted the performance and the maneuverability of BMW's, but this ad is just a bunch of cheap shots at other car makers (or the owners). I remember the ad for the E39 M5, it's one of the best ads ever - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plxNfU-PA2c

What is Laguna Seca? That is the best line. Guess BMW has forgotten how to race. Amazing moron keep on dreaming maybe someday you can afford an A3 considering you 7-Series is worthless by now.

AMAZINGBUMMER

I am deeply sadden by your multiple postings and I can not fathom that anybody could keep posting such blatantly ignorant comments.
I can see only a few possibilities to such postings;
1- you are between the age of 12 and 16 years old and you know absolutely nothing about cars.
2- you are playing the devil advocate and purposely post the most radical comments you can come up with in order to create flame wars and outrage.
3- you really believe in BMW superiority and in this case I am really sorry for you, because such ignorance and arrogance are beyond any comprehension.
4- you might suffer from some brain damage or genetic disorder and therefore I am, and we all will be sorry for you and forgive your constantly ridiculous comments.

I wish you well, I apologize if you had to refer to the dictionary while reading my comment, as I noticed quite often that grammar and vocabulary were not your forte.

I do respect BMW as a brand and as a product, they do seem to have lost their edge and it is clear that "accounting" and "marketing" have a lot to say in how the product is being built.
Life is about making the right compromises, and if you are knowledgeable, educated and with the means, which vehicle is going to fit those compromises is for each their own. But to pompously push your favorite brand like you do is a little to much for this site sometimes.

If it is a game to you, there is something disturbing to how you envision your social interaction with other through the internet.
Maybe therapy is something you might consider.

If you have half of an understanding of what you are doing when you post a comment and read the answers to it, you should have had your laugh a long time ago and give it a rest.

So no matter who you are, and what are your purposes, please get a life, get a grip, get a BMW, get a hobby, put please for the sake of this website, even if you are an agent in disguise, STOP, before all the real cars enthusiasts and connoisseur leave for good.

Be well.

I would NEVER buy a car based on any advertising I see. To me ads are used to put the brand in your mind, things to make it stand out. Someone who may not be in the market for say Febreze spray may later be shopping and realize, hey, I think I need that product. When I see this commercial I don't think, I am running out to get that car, instead, it kind of sets up in the back of your mind, so when I see an Audi on the street or the dealership I will think of it...so when the time comes for someone to make a car purchase, they may just remember to try the Audi as well on their list of vehicles to shop for.

I love it. You have amazinMoron, who is a teenager and the janitor at his local McDonald's commenting on how the Audi movie is a cheap shot.

Since when are janitors of McDonald's qualified to decide if a car enthusiast video is a cheap shot????!

We can't afford to have such illiterate and uneducated people trolling messageboards.

Hog Warts doesn't count. Wharton, I doubt you went there. And if youd did, you're not doing much for the reputation of the school. I guess the let in anyone including community college dropouts like yourself.

Oh, by the way here another win for Audi. Maybe BMW can google Laguna Seca and server as the pace car as Audi creates a new a-hole for it.

DTM: Timo Scheider is the new DTM champion!

Audi-driver Timo Scheider is the new champion of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, the DTM. The German won the last race at the Hockenheim, where is last remaining rival Paul di Resta finished in second.
"I cannot describe the feeling! There were so many things going around in my head in the last lap. To end the season with another win is just insane. I must thank all of my team members and Dr Wolfgang Ullrich who put me in this situation," said Scheider

Hahahha....Wharton B-school and I'm the pope!!!

AmazinMoron we all know your dream is to attend the MBA program of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylaniva.

Unfortunately, amazinMoron is just fantasizing about what he hopes to become.

Since amazinMoron is a middle school dropout who is the janitor at his local McDonald's he certainly won't be getting an MBA anytime soon let alone from Wharton.

High school comes before college amazinMoron! If you were educated you would know such things.
