BMW working on green supercar for 2012

According to a senior company official that spoke with AutoCar, BMW is planning “a breakthrough green supercar” by the end of 2012. Now we’re not sure if this different from the production CS Concept that we’ve been hearing about but the car is said to rival the Audi R8 and upcoming Mercedes-Benz Gullwing SLC.

BMW’s Efficient Dynamics division will enable fuel-saving technology with direct-injection, brake energy regeneration and stop-start. Insiders say the car is a “puristic two-seater that draws on all the latest BMW technology and lightweight build processes.”

thats going to be something being that there ar already green car companies out there that have supercars I know Telsa is one of them so they trying to get in on that bandwagon......but I know if if BMW and their MOTORSPORT crew will make something sweet

Should be "BMW working on a greener (more green?) supercar for 2012". By their own research, it better perform too. They just released results of a study confirming that consumers aren't interested in underperforming green vehicles. It was more related to passenger vehicles, but I'd imagine that sentiment would be amplified many times in regard to a sports car.

what's the point, here? To try to settle some decades old peeing contest? BMW already has mechanically great vehicles, even if some of them are not as attractive as their predecessors, why not work harder on what they already have instead of expanding into smaller and smaller niche segments...too much research dollars going in the wrong direction.

BMW is a big player in Formula 1 racing and next year there will be big changes. Beginning in 2009, the Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) will be integrated into the transmissions of F1 cars. BMW has always used racing to improve and advance its production cars so it only makes sense that their next supercar will have highly advanced, green technology. When Formula 1 cars used V10 engines the M5 and M6 came out with V10's. Now Formula 1 uses V8 engines and the M3 now has a high revving V8. See the connection?
