BMW X5 xDrive35d: First production ready photos

Here are the first photos of the BMW X5 xDrive35d, the first diesel BMW SAV that will be launched on U.S soil. And who else other than our friend Palbay could have brought us the photos?! He spotted the X5d somewhere in Spartanburg and took the time to snap some all around photos of the car.

The X5 xDrive35d stands out as a sporty, high-torque Sports Activity Vehicle with excellent qualities for long-distance motoring. The BMW X5 xDrive35d achieves an EPA rating of 19/26 MPG (city/hwy) and accelerates from 0-60 in 6.9 seconds, probably one of the fastest diesel powered SUVs in the U.S.

We have also recently learned that the BMW X5 xDrive35d will be launched in January and be available immediately at U.S dealerships.

0 to 60mph in 6.9 seconds? It is faster than the stock X5 3.0 which, if memory serves, was tested at 7.9 seconds by Car & Driver a while back.

Correction... THE fastest. It's almost as quick as the 4.8i but still manages to get better mileage than the Mercedes ML320 CDI which is significantly slower.

No way! Looks just like gasoline version! But seriously, love that BMW are bringing over the diesels. Now if they can bring over some of those smaller ones for the 3 series, say the 1.8 or the 2.0. And maybe bring over the 5-door 1 series....then we'd have a revolution. I'd like to see the X5 35d with the sport kit and 21inchers.

Its just really funny when GM tries to make a fuel efficient suv that can not reach 20mpg with a hybrid and cvt but here comes BMW with just a diesel getting it easily. Now I am just worried that a good amount of dumb americans will put gas instead od diesel in it.

Oh, one more thing. Why such an emphasis on the Xdrive with the X5s? Why does it have to be officially an X5 xDrive 35d? Why couldn't it just be an X5 35d? Same goes for the 4.8 and 3.0, which are now also xDrive48i, xDrive30i? I hate the look of that badge on the front doors. It looks tacky. Are they trying to pull an Audi, like with the Quattro? I know I'm quibbling, but just thought I'd throw that out there.

Since the upcoming X1 will be available with RWD or Xdrive, I am sure they just want to make it clear when an SAV has it or not by labeling it clearly. It will very helpful when perusing the lot looking at them. A lot of cars have multi-syllabic names that are just as long, this one is just new to us. We will get used to it.

Your question is a great one and one that a lot of people don't know the answer too.

The Audi Quattro system is one of the most recognizable AWD systems in the world. 70% of people polled in the US can make the association between Audi and Quattro instantly, whereas only %17 can make the association between BMW and xDrive (xi). Until this year everything was an xi and most people can't or don't recognize the affiliation with BMW. Thus the idea behind xDrive. If BMW can convert people into understanding that xDrive is BMW's AWD platform, then they might be able to steal a huge part of Quattro's market share.

I might be bias because I work for BMW, but I think this is a very smart move on BMW AG's part.

Not the fastest diesel SUV. I'm not sure about strictly 0-60 numbers, but I'm sure, overall, the Volkswagen Touareg TDI (5.0 V-10) is faster, even as it will be phased out next year and replaced with an all-new, fifty-state certified, slower, 3.0 V-6 with SCR.
