Your Pain At The Pump Pays Off For Exxon By Posting A Record $14.8 BILLION Profit For Quarter
Exxon Mobil Corp posted the highest ever U.S. quarterly operating profit and Royal Dutch Shell Plc beat market forecasts on Thursday, helped by high oil prices and fatter refinery margins.

Exxon's earnings reached $14.8 billion, shattering the company's previous profit record and rising 58 percent from the year-ago quarter.

Now how much of this profit will be used for exploration?

the oil companies actually only get a small percentage of what we pay ($2.05 a gal. or something)

And we want to give them a tax break yet???? $14.8 billion dollars not enough.....hmmmmmmm. Something is wrong with this!

I agree, but i can see something in it.

With those past few record profits they seemed to have invested some of it into making a better refining process thereby yielding more profit.

But then again when federal funds are given to you to invest in exploration, why spend your own money.

Just pass the price on to the little guy.

They'll do better once McCain gives them the additional tax break..

Giving them tax break will also include us in that, but tax them more, we'll get taxed and also the product price will go up. So what's hard in understanding this, and how are Barack Husain Obama’s supporters so stupid to not get this?

Plus, the rich will always be rich, and believe me the democrats didn't descend from heavens to save the poor man, look at what they did with the banking system.

So vote for what makes sense and not what sounds good you idiots.

Before the lynch mob gets going, let's put XOM's profit into a little perspective. This number is from Q3 (7/1/08 through 9/30/08). Don't forget, this was when oil was hitting record highs almost everyday. A barrel of crude hit $147.90 back in July. Currently, oil is trading around $65 per barrel. XOM's Q4 will be drastically lower due to this huge drop in price. It is basic economics.

I agree everyone wants to look at how much profit that they make but look at the profit margin. They pulled in 137 billion in revenue but net income was 14.8 for a profit margin of 10%. In comparison Microsofts profit marging is 36%. How come we are not in an uproar over microsofts profits? Because Exxon deals in a business where every person in the world needs there product. If you want to do something about the profit margin invest in alternative fueled cars.

according to the mainstream media companies like Exxon who are a part of BIG OIL are bad bad bad.

Nolimt735 puts this into perspective. Nobody balks at Microsoft or Apple or Google and there MUCH BIGGER PERCENTAGE profits, however let it be oil and everyone is on it.

Imagine how dangerous a country we would be if everyone was truly educated on facts instead of fed a steady diet of propaganda by the media.

I get pissed when I see how much Microsoft software is too!!! So overrated! And ipods should be cheaper but I think apple is taking a plunge. You can choose to live without their items moreso than gas.

Plus gas prices has forced many companies like airlines to struggle and/or go out of business. So seeing them rake in profits while our jobs are being loss due to it is tough to swallow. Thats why we hate ono these companies. But I somewhat agree with you and nolimit

Its because they are indirectly connected to the consumer for their income as the average person just buys a whole computer from the shop/store. The Gas companies are heavily dependent on the consumer to directly buy their gas.

agreed..but most american don't bother to find the truth, they don't read either, they get snippits from tv and internet and then repeat like parrots....well see what the profits are with $60/barrel oil in a slow economy globally....oh yeah, we all own stocks in oil companies, don't forget the mutual funds, managed accounts and stocks millions of people all over the world own, why not own stocks in the companies that actually make profits in years like this, if you complain about the price of gas/or profits, just buy shares in XOM or whatever....in fact if you had invested only a small amount in any of the oil companies a year or two ago, you would have more $$ for gas than you would know....

They will pass the prices directly to us if that happens. What we need is a revolution against the gas companies but that will never happen as too many people are self centered.

Hey Slappy, who you think funds the American economy? That's right, large U.S. corporations. These large corporations are feeding most of the banks and make the economy turn. So if we tax the heck out of them, then the government makes more money to use on worthless social programs and less goes into the banks and overall economy. Then the banks can't lend your poor A$$ any money.

You know what, I have one question for all you people who complain about a business (any business) making a profit:

What have you done to reduce your consumption of their product?

Your answer is directly correlated to your right to bitch and moan.

If you don't like it, don't buy it. Does your business or employer make a profit? Well screw them (and you) too, they should cahrge the poor publoc less for their product.

Here's an idea for those who complain that a business makes a profit in our capitalist society: go move to a communist society, change your consumption, or STFU.

Or, and here's any easy one regarding oil companies;
cut their "windfall" profits in half by carpooling with one coworker. Cut it in quarters by filling the carpool with 4 people.

Nah. You wouldn't want to do that. That might inconvenience you or cramp your style.

I wont even mention using public transportation.
