BMW Stumble In October Down 13.9%, Mini Skyrockets 56.4%
BMW Group US sales (BMW and MINI combined) down 5.0 percent in October. Woodcliff Lake, NJ - November 3, 2008... The BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) reported October sales of 25,475 vehicles, a decrease of 5.0 percent over the 26,821 vehicles sold in October 2007. The BMW Group also reported a year-to-date sales volume of 261,802 vehicles, down 4.8 percent, compared to 275,094 vehicles in the same period of 2007.

BMW Brand Sales
Sales of BMW brand vehicles decreased 13.9 percent in October for a total of 20,203 compared to 23,451 reported in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date BMW brand sales were down 10.0 percent, to 215,836 vehicles compared to 239,788 vehicles sold in the same period in 2007.

"October sales show there is still life in the market, but it will take some hard work to achieve results,” said Jim O’Donnell, President of BMW of North America, LLC. “At BMW, our attractive APR financing rates and BMW’s four year or 50,000 miles free maintenance program have been well received by customers. We believe these are major reasons why the year-to-date sales continue to track better than the overall premium market.”

BMW Automobile Sales
BMW’s automobile sales are down 15.1 percent in October to 16,195 versus 19,084 in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date sales also decreased 10.4 percent, to 169,183 automobiles compared to 188,844 in the same period of 2007.

BMW Sports Activity Vehicle Sales
Sales of BMW Sports Activity Vehicles decreased by 8.2 percent in October to 4,008 vehicles over the 4,367 sold last October. Year-to-date, sales of BMW Sports Activity Vehicles were down 8.4 percent, to 46,653 vehicles compared to the 50,944 sold in the first ten months of 2007.

MINI Brand Sales
MINI USA reported October sales of 5,272 automobiles, up 56.4 percent from the 3,370 cars sold in October 2007. Year-to-date, the division reported sales of 45,966 automobiles, an increase of 30.2 percent, compared to the 35,306 cars reported in the first ten months of 2007.

"We are looking at MINI’s continued sales success as a barometer of changing consumer habits," said Jim McDowell, Vice-President of MINI USA. "The frenzy of a couple of months ago of dumping a large amount of vehicles has abated, but our persistent and ongoing demand seems to be saying small is the new big."

BMW Certified Pre-Owned
Sales of BMW’s Certified Pre-Owned vehicles are down 0.8 percent, to 7,937 CPO vehicles versus 7,998 vehicles reported last October. Year-to-date, CPO sales are up 17.4 percent, to 85,081 over the 72,443 reported in the same period in 2007.

BMW used to have super detailed model by model figures. They listed every single 3/5/and so on series trim line separately. Then they quit doing that and just combined all 3/5/so on series together. Now they didn't even bother at all.

I guess less info is better for BMW in this case.

Sometimes those numbers are released later. This time those figures were just delayed I just posted the breakout.

Here is the breakdown of the figures

1-series .... 1,173
3-series .... 9,059
5-series .... 3,958
6-series .... 454
7-series .... 1,096
Z's .... 455
X3 .... 1,294
X5 .... 2,358
X6 .... 356

Basically, BMW sold more 3-series in the US, than Audi did in their entire line-up. Kind of puts things into perspective ..Good job BMW, even in a market that is down

Well statistically more people can afford BMWs and not Audi's, so it figures due to the number of poor people in the US buying BMW's.

From the 10 vehicles with the highest lease share, seven belong to German automakers with four of those being BMWs. The 7-Series tops the list with a lease share in 2008 of 85.3%, followed by BMW Z4 (70.7 %), BMW 6 (68.6 %), and BMW X3 (67.3 %).

4ever,

Since you brought Audi into this discussion, how do you explain the fact that Audi's sales are down 3% YTD while BMW is down 10%? The fact that BMW outsells Audi in the US does not mean that BMW makes better cars. Would you say Toyota makes a better car than BMW because they sell more?
I agree that BMW's brand image sells a lot of cars, and image seems to be the dominant deciding factor for many people buying BMW's - it's not the handling or steering precision (I know many such people). At the same time, BMW's image is the reason many people decide NOT to buy a BMW. It's a double edged sword.
The fact is, Audi's market share in the US is increasing in spite of the deteriorating market conditions. And that's being achieved with great products. Give credit where credit is due.

well the fact that Audi is only down 3 percent compared to BMW 10 percent dosent mean Audi makes better cars either. BMW's cars are considered the benchmarks in many of the segments that they are in, they make some of the best engines in the world. And the main reason Audi's sales are up in comparison to bmw is b/c Audi within the last year or so released a lot of new vehicles, A4, A5,and the TTs fairly new. while most of BMWs vehicles are nearing the end of there production lifes. except for the X5 and X6.

Just car . Audi hasnt really increased much market share. It amazes me to the denial of the Audi contigent on this site as to think Audi actually has s shot in the next 10 years to best BMW in the US. BMW sets the Benchmark for the Performance sedan categories. Yes, BMW's lease well. The people that actually leased a car in the last 2 years are the smart ones. Have you seen what the market has deteriorated to on the pre-owned side of things? The pre-owned market is falling and falling. What is more amazing is the BMW has sold more Certified Pre-Owned cars in the US, than Audi sold in New Cars.

Audi has done well, I am not taking anything away from their accomplishments. They are just not quite on the same playing field as BMW. They are getting better and the New Audi A4 is a definite step in the right direction.

4ever,

When Audi only goes down 3% while the market is shrinking by double digits and the competition is losing sales in the double digits, yes Audi is gaining market share. Do the math.

And who said anything about "Audi actually having a shot in the next 10 years to best BMW in the US"? I think you are the one who brought Audi into this discussion. What was your point? Why did you feel the need to compare Audi's sales volume to BMW's?

If you're counting the TT, then you may as well count the 3 Series coupe/vert. The TT also came out at the same time as the X5. That gives you three new BMWs and three new Audis over the past year and a half.

So I made up my own conclusion, well, 3 of them actually;

1- he is child (pre-teen) probably
2- he is an agent just fueling flame wars (shame on autospies)
3- he is a bit slow, as in challenged (therefore forgiven)

An interesting thing about market share since Audi was brought into the discussion by some insecure beenie fanboy (4evr). The market share at the end of the day does not determine which car is better. That is an ignorant stance that an automotive enthusiast would not use. The goal is global marketshare growth and Audi is on a tear while BMW and Mercedes-Benz try to hang on to what they have. It will be interesting to see Audi's global growth in October. Probably won't be near the 12.2% of September, but is easily gaining marketshare on a global level not matched by its competitors at this time.

Why are you surprised at the fall in Mercedes sales? Don't you think posers buy Mercedes? The brand image that BMW and Mercedes have in the US attracts posers when the economy is good. Those buyers disappear when the economy falters. The fact that Audi has not enjoyed the same brand image as its rivals in the US keeps most posers away. You know the old argument of: "Why should I buy and Audi when I can have a BMW or Mercedes for the same money", that's how posers think.

I thought that posers think like, " maybe I will get the second best or the one that is closest, to the real thing ." people that buy a replica Rolex and try to show it off as the real thing. Someone that buys a Japanesse touring motorcycle and then customizes it to look as close to a Harley as possible. There is a big difference as the way an Audi drives and a BMW drives. The only Audi's that were or are even close to the balance and feel of a BMW is the RS4 ( lifecycle has ended ) and the R8, and the TT. Other than that, Audi passenger cars and their FWD based AWD drivetrains are for the birds so to speak. There is no feel or numbness thru the steering wheel, the engines lack flexibility thru the RPM range, and the suspensions have too much give in them. For what they are, Audi builds a good car. I like the A5/S5 from a style point but in regards to driving them, I wouldnt waste my time. There is such a lack of poise in the car. The way the S5 handles and deals with weight transfer is embarrassing. This is supposed to be their rival to the 335i. It is not even a contest.

BMW sells more 3 series than Audis entire lineup, there demand is low in the first place as a company, and the 3 seriesdoesnt just rule its category either but others. When Audi can stop parading as someone low volume yet mainstream seller due to their non existant demand, and you Audi "crazed" will creep out of the closet andinto reality, oh and im sure everyon misses the 399 leases on the A4, not to mention all the other deals they have as their dealers beg for sales, ill respect them otherwise, keep your common comments to yourself

yeah Audi's bread and butter A4(whos starting price is in the low 30's) has recently been released thats the main reason they are flat. X6 and X5 are not huge sellers(starting prices 45k and up), but they do sell steady over a longer period then cars.

and bmw sold about 3000 less cars this month then last year at this time, Audi sold 20 to 50 cars more... lol i don't think they are getting many of bmw's customers. The reality is people are not buying as many cars right now b/c of the economy. Audi has stayed flat b/c they have a very small market share, and they just released there bread and butter sedan.period.
