Hyundai introduces its new R-Diesel powerplant

After the high-performance V6 Lambda RS engine, another powerplant was revealed today by Hyundai Motor: the R-Diesel engine! The new 2.2-liter diesel powerplant is capable to deliver an impressive 184 hp and 390 Nm of torque, surpassing its German and French competitors. According to the manufacturer the engine will be available on the 2010 Hyundai Tucson and Sonata models which are due be launched.

Diesel engine doesn`t make much torque , less than the same capacity petrol , TURBOCHARGED diesel makes much more torque than NOT turbocharged petrol engine . And this is the whole "tickler" . Put turbocharger to petrol and it makes similar torque . Diesels have also advantage that they`re using variable geometry turbocharger and becouse of that they may have less turbo lag .

Thats not exactly true. Diesels make more torque because of higher cyl compression and a longer stroke.

I think you`re wrong Spectator . Show me a N/A diesel engine that is doing at least the same torque as a N/A petrol engine , of course with a similar displacement .

Tuners can easily get out more than 184 hp and 390 Nm from 2.2 turbocharged diesel engine . Horsepower per liter ratio isn`t decisive factor to judge turbocharged engine as better than competitors .

and Mercedes still has more torque. And just a few horse power less. Plus, what about Laguna engine?:
The diesel version of Laguna GT is powered by a new 2.0 dCi engine, offering performance, driveability and acoustics. In the GT, it provides peak power of 180hp at 3,750rpm. Peak torque of 400Nm is available from 2,000rpm. Yes, its a bit smaller, but already on pair with this space age hyundai machine.

this beats putting a duramax v8 diesel in a passenger car. Who would have thought Hyundai would be a contender in this space? those specs will move any mid sized car quickly.

Evaryone seems to forget about the 2.0 Diesel from BMW, the one that apears on the 123D, that one has 204HP and 400Nm of torque and less 200cc of capacity, so can anyone tell me why is it surpassing germans and French??? In capacity, yes, in power there are better choices!!!
