Does the Nissan Versa Sedan 1.6 really cost $9,900
As we reported last week, Nissan will launch a Versa Sedan 1.6 go on Nov. 18th with pricing beginning at $9,900. That’s pretty good since it comes with six-airbags and active head restraints. Don’t get too excited just yet.

The folks at KickingTires did some digging and found out that at $9,900, the Nissan Versa Sedan 1.6 forgoes a stereo, automatic windows and door locks as well as an air conditioning system. You can also forget about steering wheel tilt, driver-seat height adjustment and cruise-control. Oh and if you don’t know how to drive a manual - get ready to cash out some extra green. Duh. What were they expecting? I think it's a no-brainer that the car was meant to be a stripper. But even after the options you're still well under 13K for a new car.

There are any number of consumers for which a 'stripped' version of the Versa would be ideal e.g. college students, those looking for a 2nd or 3rd vehicle for their (just learning to drive) teen to use etc.

The only option that I'd find necessary would be A/C, but then again, I do live in Vegas.

If you live in Vegas, you must have noticed the black tire marks on highway dividers every 100 feet or so where Vegas drivers scraped the divider or drove their car right over it into the opposite lanes -- do you really want to drive a death trap in that environment?

Nonetheless, the 107-hp gets 26/33 mpg (city/highway) when mated to a 4-speed automatic and 26/34 mpg with the 5-speed manual.

- ABS package (antilock brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist) adds $250
- Destination charge is $695

Total with A/C, automatic transmission and ABS: $12,935.

That $9900 price will get people to come check it out, but I think most people would add a few options(like A/C) before they actually bought one.

Glad that there are at least some auto makes not falling victim to the auto tranny only option as people in america are getting increasingly lazy.

Lazy, my ass! Automatic trannys are an essential safety feature and they are very efficient these days. I get really pissed when an idiot with a manual stopped on a hill in front of me slips back about 5 feet every time he tries to go. That makes me nervous. BTW, even my lowly Passat 2.0t has a 6-speed automatic now and I only used 7.3 litres/100km of fuel on a trip from Edmonton to Ottawa recently. Cars with manual trannys have poor resale value.

BAck in the day Toyota used to offer a stripper Tercel with no carpet and a 4-speed, vinyl interior and optional dealer installed A/C. Maybe we have come full-circle!

To answer EL34 the car is built in mexico. THe reason behind a base model vehicle is to get more people to look into buying a new car for around 10,000 rather than something they will have to repair daily. Keep In mind you still get all the standard feature that are required now a day which is 6 airbags, tire pressure monitor sysyem, and a 5 star safety rating.
