Detroit 3 Now Asking For $50 Billion More! - $25 Biilion For UAW Healthcare Costs
General Motors Corp, Ford Motor Co and Chrysler LLC strapped for cash as sales plunge, are seeking $50 billion in federal loans to help them weather the worst auto market in 25 years, a person familiar with the matter said.

The package would be $25 billion for health-care spending and $25 billion for general liquidity that could be delivered in different ways, including short-term borrowing from the Federal Reserve, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the plan isn't public. In return, the companies would be willing to take steps such as granting stock warrants, the person said.

It's not the Detroit 3 you gotta thank. It's the UAW and all other unions for that matter.

The answer is universal government-run health care for all workers as is the case in most western democracies. That is not socialism -- it is a way of keeping the nation's industries competitive by limiting corporate health care costs to fair and reasonable employer share of premiums. At the same time, the government needs to implement policies that curb the counterproductive practice of frivolous and excessive medical malpractice litigation.

Bailouts should be done only with the financially distressed company putting up a substantial amount of equity in addition to a commitment to pay back any loans with interest.

This is absurd. You can't keep throwing taxpayer money at a company with a horrific business model.

Bush's legacy...

Nationalized banking, nationalized health-care, nationalized auto-industry, nationalized airlines, etc.

So long as there is a nation left.

Why should the hard working people in America have to spread their wealth around to the non-hardworking?

This is what GM should do. Sell all of their factories except around 1 or 2. Eliminate their entire line up. Build one "ONE" car that gets 70mpg and seats 4 or 5 people comfortable using TDI/electric motor. Then later on add more cars. GM seems like a preppy bitch that is milking money out of their parents. Gov. do not fall for it.

Why? so they continue making Ugly Au$$ that NO one want to buy like the Hummmer? yeah I pretty sure the Hummer is saling like hot cake right now?

Why can't they make a decent looking car or at least take the one that is already a hit and improve it more.

I don't own an American car. However not all of GM cars are ugly or bad.Certainly Cadillac makes a good product as well as Chevy.Pontiac makes a few.Saturn does not have bad products either. Since Buick sells so well in China I would keep it in the fold. The rest of the brands need to go GMC,Hummer,Saab. Regarding Pontiac unless GM is going to keep the RWD products there is no point in keeping it as there is nothing else to distinguish it from Chevy or Saturn. So GM needs to dramatically downsize. They need to forget about being #1.At this point it's about staying afloat.I would try to sell Saab,GMC,and Hummer and make a decision quick on Pontiac. But here's the thing. The economy will be terribly affected if GM and Ford go down. Chrysler I can't say much about as they are alot smaller. But the bottom line is the US auto industry must be saved. We will all be affected if they go down the tubes. It's in some ways like the sub prime mortgage crises. It has ended up by domino affecting everyone. Even if the Government needs to own a piece of them until things stabilize. Does this smack of socialism? Yes it does. Bottom line these are not normal times. I believe the government must do everything in it's power to stop a great depression.A US depression leads to a world depression. World depression lead to war and conflicts between countries including a potential World War.

American still have some really good looking cars like the Cadillac CTS, Lincoln MKS, Saturn Sky, and Pontaic Soltice.

American just make to much model, and many of them look very similar to each other. Why can't they bring all the good looking car from Europe here to the U.S. and sales it here?

Like the Ford Mondeo, or the Pontaic Holden or whatever they call it in Austrilia? Just make a more reliable, fuel efficience, and good looking car like the one in Europe, and Austrilia and they will sell like hot cake...!

You know what is wrong and why AMERICA IS IN Touble?? It is because of dumb people like you that do not even attemp to support your own Country's compnany's. Who the hell do you think you all are. You sure as hell are not fellow American's to me. You should be ashamed of yourselfs. I know Canandian's that supports our countrys company's. You make me sick!!!!!!!!!

The Goverment has to bail them out or our country will lose 2+ MILLION jobs the big three did not survive. Do you know how this would impact our country's economy?, if this the big three went out of business the other auto makers in other country's would soon fail as well because since stupid un loyal Americans that buy their JUNK wont have the money to buy. Crazy America is the only place in the World Lexus is even sold, every other place in the world there is not a Lexus name plate it is just Toyoto.
So are you really sure you want the big three to go under???

WAKE UP!!! THIS COUNTRY IS IN TROUBLE!! Which as you if you watch the news since our country has been in trouble it as affected the Worlds economy has well.

And has for Bush the housing market and banking problems where not caused by him, it was all the liberals at Freddie and Fannie Mae that made this happen. Lenders where giving loans like money was water, then they tighten up so much that they have made it so diffecult to get a loan for Homes, to cars to small business loans. Infact even since the Goverment gave them the 700 Billion they still have not losened up and the banks are hording the money and some of these bigger banks are buying other banks with the money that is our tax money. The white House has come out many times telling the Banks losen up we did not give the money to have the banks keep under lock and key.

And as for the UAW the big Three need to break them since the UAW is killing the big three.

The UAW needs to be GONE!!!! and GM, Ford, And Chrysler would be profitable again.

SO WAKE UP!! IF YOU DON'T MEXICO WILL BE THE PLACE TO LIVE AND AMERICAN'S WILL BE FIGHTING TO GET INTO THEIR COUNTRY VS THEM TRYING TO GET INTO OURS!!!!!!!!

bestofallcad,

what you get against Toyota/Lexus? Honda/Acura, Nissan/Infiniti, BMW, Audi, MB, Hyudai saling their car in the U.S. too, how come you don't bitch about them?

Stop being stop and blame Toyota/Lexus for their success in the U.S. For your information Toyota and other Japanese are providing a stable for many American.

And don't talk to me about me an American I was in the Freaking U.S. Arm Force service so I know what it like to be an American. I have own a Dodge in the early 90s, and the good 1976 Ford Crown Victoria.

You get GREEDY and unqualify CEO, designer, and engineer running the big to the ground. Stop paying them hundred of million of dollar a years and only reward for sales success than maybe were see some change.

The only cars that the I can think of buying from the Big 3 are the Cadillac CTS, Saturn Sky, Soltice, MKZ, and MKS.

And I understand the millions of job that is going to be lost, and how it will affect not only the U.S. but the worlds as well.

I support the government to loan them the money they need, but they need to clean their act.

One of the major problems hurting the Big 3 are the UAW's health insurance cost. This puts the Big 3 at a severe disadvantage on the price per car right out of the starting gates. Having family that work for Ford, GM (and Audi/VW in Auburn Hill, MI), my brother who retired in August from Ford's after 32 years was limited in what his job function allows on the factory floor. Reason: these stupid UAW workers are so specialized that if he wanted to get a bin of parts or gizmos in the factory, he had to ask another UAW worker to fetch them. The greed of the UAW, poor management decisions and poor quality in the late 70's, early 80's got these auto companies in a huge mess. I couldn't believe what my brother got paid per hour just for putting nuts and bolts on. And the perks & benefits were just as ridiculous. Initially Ford would pay 100% college tuition for any child in the family; pay 100% for all dental work; pay 100% on everyone's eyeglasses up to 2 pair per year; $5 deductiable on any prescriptions and office visits. You talk about greedy. Then any holiday you worked, you got paid double time.

Now these chumps what you and me to bail them out. It doesn't look like we have much of a choice. If we say forget you, many jobs will be lost. The auto industry employs so many people from the Big 3 to the parts suppliers. I think if we "loan" them the money, we should have more input or a stake in these companies. Too many times these auto companies are just wrong about their designs or product. Look at Ford's they just kept building more gas guzzler SUVs and trucks; same with Chrysler. I grew up in the muscle car era. GM has showed us the new Camero for several years now, but it just takes them to long to get their product to the streets. We're still waiting for the new Camero. I think we need to lend them the money to save jobs, but we should have some sort of stake in these companies so we don't have them back at the table again.

Win Win Rescue Plan:

Japan's National Healthcare = Lower Cost manufacturing
American cannot compete with such a model.
Rescue plan:

1.Government Health Care for UAW.

2.Replace Pensions. Insted, Triple IRA contributions and enact Inflation-Adjusted Social Security.

3. Income Tax Deduction for Purchase of a Ford, GM or Chrysler car or truck.

4.Deduction for Loan Interest like we had in the 70s.

5. Eliminate State and County Tax on New American Car purchases. In my state that will save each person $3,000-$5,000 instantly at point of sale.

6. Suspend State Tax on Diesel and FlexFuels.

7. Tax credit for Diesel, FlexFuel or Hybrid vehicle.

8. Depreciation allowance for Automobile every year as many people use their car for work these days.

Well then State Unions with Pensions and Healthcare liabilites need to also go down.

We can't have worker's rights and benefits for the chosen few.

Where I live, Governmnet Unions have mandated that Health Insurnce pay for face-lifts and breast augmentation for government workers.

And we want to attack the auto workers benefits? The auto-workers don't design cheap cars, they just put the cars together and do what they are told.
