Vw’s next roadster to debut in January at Detroit Auto Show

Volkswagen is allegedly working on a reasonably priced mid-engine sports car which it plans to make public sometime early in the next decade. A concept model of the vehicle was initially scheduled for debut at this month’s Los Angeles Auto Show, however a company insider has lately revealed that the concept’s released has been delayed to the Detroit Auto Show in January of 2009.

The insider also informed Automotive News Europe that VW plans to open the production version in 2011 as a halo version for the brand, and that it would be on top of an improved version of the Audi R8 platform.

I think it will hit the market at a good time ... if they configure it right.
Imagine, a fun car with paddle-shifters that gets > 50 MPG!
It will pay for itself in gas savings for many folks.
What more could you want in a commuter?
With the economy down, about the only thing that will sell quickly is a vehicle with high ROI (return on investment) and a 1.6-litre turbo-diesel is just the ticket.

Will this be the lower-friction "dry-clutch" DSG?
With that and the small TDI this could hit 70 MPG on the highway in "normal driving", opening up a new market high-mileage drivers who want to minimize fuel expenses.
