Vw updates its Phaeton range
Volkswagen has provided the Phaeton a gentle refresh. The slow-selling luxury saloon gets a fresh front grille and alloy designs, and additional new metallic paint shades. The inside has a modified center console with an updated instrument cluster and a new touch screen satnav system.

Volkswagen has also cut the series to only two models: the 3.0-liter V6 TDI and the top of the range 6.0 W12. Sticker prices have increased slightly, the 3.0-litre V6 TDI now sells for £44,235 ($69,000 or €54,100) and the W12 listing for £75,395 ($117,625 or €92,171).

Why did they even bother updating this marketing disaster? Nobody in his or her right mind is going to pay this kind of money for a Volkswagen, especially in this kind of economy. There must be some very stubbonr, very stupid executives at VW.

The Audi A8/A8L and the Bentley Continental series, which use much of the Phaeton platform and technology, are much more successful from a sales standpoint than the Phaeton. One big reason (but not the only reason) for their success is that people are willing to shell out big bucks for an Audi or Bentley.

The VW Group has a mass-market marque (Volkswagen), a luxury marque (Audi), and a super-luxury marque (Bentley). They are all part of the same company. The VW marque should stop wasting time and money by trying to be all things to all people.

Somebody drive a stake into the heart of the Phaeton! It was a marketing mistake! Get over it!

This is a mistake. If you want disaster look at the whole Chrysler line up.

It's a nice car but the only problem is the stupid dashboard and the interior layout and they seem to recognize that so lets wait and see.

It's not a mistake of a car unless they stop producing and stop making efforts it's not a failure. You only fail when you stop battling.

Best production car I sat in at the detroit Show years ago. Everything was perfect for a Business Sedan.

Currently there are no affordable Diesel Business sedans in the US.

You would think the big 3 would aggressively pursuit this new untapped market.

You would think.

I like Bentley, but seriously, who is going to buy one and use it as a company car for business. At 25 cents per mile reimbursement? I don't think so. Bentleys are great, but have a limited market.

If VW can price the Phateon well below an A8L, they might have a market. They would need to produce a volume similar to the Town Car or Deville to make it mainstream an affordable.

Perhaps the New VW plant in the US can crank these Diesel Babies out, then we can see more of them within reach.

VW should just make a Phaeton Line, and Build 1 Car with its own logo.

Although the though of a Phateon Diesel Wagon is somewhat intriguing as well.
