I've had bad experience with Lincoln rental cars. Poor interior finishing especially. The doors don't seem to close solidly.

Are you nuts, Agent63? We have a 2001 Lincoln Navigator at 93,000 miles and it runs like new. I prefer Lincoln to Cadillac due to practicality, comfort, and price. I've been in a 2001 and 2005 Lincoln Navigator, a Lincoln LS, and a Town Car. I've also been in a Cadillac Escalade, Cadillac DTS, and Cadillac SRX. I find that Lincoln tranmissions seem to know when to shift and the Cadillac tranmissions don't shift as well. You may think Cadillac is better, but Lincoln has got a lot of potential.

I think I've counted about 15 MKS's in one day. Suddenly every other car is an MKS here in Detroit. Over the last 5 years It went from Cadillacs everywhere, to Mercedes E350s, and finally Lincoln MKSs. All these had one thing in common when I would see a bunch on the roads. Cheap leases. I'm not saying it's a bad thing though. I guess it's a good way to bring back customers that were once lost. Hopefully they will like the car enough to keep coming back.

Carboy, I had a Lincoln LS V8 back in 2000. It was a nice looking car, but the transmission gave up at about 50k miles and one window motor died three times. I haven't had a Ford since then. This new MKS looks like it will do a lot better though. Ford has really changed within the last 5 years. It started with the Fusion and since then they have been making better quality cars and finally more appealing cars like the MKS. The only thing missing is RWD. However, it looks like it is so well crafted that I would not mind the AWD. As for the Cadillac transmissions, my CTSs transmission is very smooth and it responds really nicely. Try one of the newer Cadillacs with a 6 speed.

I was actually talking about the 2008 Cadillac Escalade, but is that new enough for you? I have to admit the power of the car is impressive, but it seems to downshift and upshift for no reason at least twice during our rental period of five days. It was also a bargin to rent because Hertz apparently made a computer error and it was only $90 a week! I've also been an Escalade Platium in GM's Auto Show in Motion in Foxboro, MA sometime in 2005. I found the tranmission was good, but it was the hard sporsts suspension. I never really liked Cadillac's idea of no Captains chairs aka no center console for second row unlike Navigator, and the fact it doesn't use a independent rear suspension, thus no leg room. One thing I have to say though, is that it wins in Pop Culture. Don't take it the wrong way, I wouldn't mind a Cadillac, but somehow, I'm a Lincoln man.

I agree with you on the captain seats with no floor console in the rear. I had a 2007 Yukon and I swear whoever sat back there needed to buckle up. If I'd make a turn a little fast the person in the back seat, with no seat belt, would fall off the seat. As for the transmission in that it was really smooth, but that was the 4 speed. Never really had any problems with that. Maybe I should try one of the new Lincolns.

However, 001, I think your take on it is incorrect.

I read the same article (think it was in the WSJ but I don't remember) but I don't think it listed the hottest sellers (the Audi R8 is a 'hottest' seller?) but instead listed the cars with the lowest days in inventory (so either low volume cars that are artificially hard to get [i.e. the Audi R8 or the BMW X6] or truly popular cars [i.e the Prius or the Fit]) but perhaps not the ones that sold the most.

They are the cars moving off dealer lots the fastest...not the volume leaders.

It read "R8***", meaning small sample size. That went for the X6 as well.

the X6 is one stand-out car. you will sense its presence if its near by. no one can walk by without looking at it twice or starring at it.

Sailor is referring to the BMW X6... not the Jaguar XF.

It is fcuking awesome that BMW has the cojones to do something different and in my opinion extraordinarily special. If you want a tall wagon there are hundreds if not thousands of variations. If you want a very focused part of the SUV experience and incredible driving dynamics and distinctively sporty design now you at least have a CHOICE.

Want me to go ask the guy that parks his outside my office, its in white. The X6 that is.

the new MKS is a nice looking car and the appointments are very nice as well. Just looks good all around and the front and rear are very clean yet distinctly lincoln.

Yep the Lincoln MKS is a real winner despite people’s predictions.
To be honest, the concept disappointed me, but when I saw the production model, I was blown away. The car has very tight tolerances and looks like Mercedes Level for Fit, finish and craftsmanship.
This car would have much better as a rear drive platform. Lincoln should have used the small 4.4L V8 from The Lincoln LS and Thunderbird platform.

Front drive does not make for good Luxury or performance attributes. This car is extremely nice, but certainly not of Flagship status. Ford V8s are very quite, smooth and powerful and perhaps would have been much more suitable. Diesel might have also been a good thought.

Cadillac is planning to go rear drive to compete with BMW and the Euros. Ford seems to be playing it safe by marketing sophisticated soccer moms these days. Yes, I know 70% MKS sales went to men, but Diesel Rear-drive is more of a business man's car.

As much as I like Ford, I think the Seville STS with Northstar V8 would be a better choice, even though the Seville is front-drive. The Seville is a sturdy car that is well respected and gained quite a loyal following.

the current generation STS is rear wheel drive. the only fwd left is the Deville aka DTS and the srx.

I still plan to wait for the MKt instead.

I don't really price a car by the monthly payment, I try to get the best deal on the total purchase price.

Surprising to see the X6 up there. I just got an FX35 and love it. In Montreal, the FX35/50 is sold out until March.

I have seen all of 1 new FX on the road.

The EX is also a flop. Probably because it trades gas mileage for speed, but it's also ridiculously cramped, with zero rear legroom and a tiny trunk.

I find it so strange that the A5/S5 is outselling the A6. I guess people really buy off looks. If Audi allocated more to the US it would improve their bottom line dramatically.

I'm also really surprised at the MKS... not about the R8, though. I would be surprised if a dealer could keep one in stock for more than a day.

The A5/S5 and Passat were the winners at the 2008 Detroit show in my book. Probably highest on my list in the 8 years I've attended the show. I liked the Q Big Wagon as well.

Seemed like the A5 was a ton of car for $50 Grand. A large 2-door with a real back seat.

The Bentleys were also nice.
