Audi ready to build the new R4 a.k.a. baby R8

Sports car enthusiasts are in for a big surprise! Audi is planning an arresting new mid-engined machine – the R4. The new vehicle will be patterned on a totally new platform and mounted above the TT in Audi’s series, providing buyers a driver-focused two-seater with a beginning price of £35,000 ($52,100 or €40,880).

It’s the product of a reported joint project with Porsche, so the venture will create a fresh platform to support the Coupe and Roadster versions of the R4, and also offer the foundation for the next Boxster and Cayman. It’s these basic sellers in the Porsche series that the R4 will target.

Diluting the market?

A car slotted between the TT and the R8 gives Audi 3 sports cars. If it share's platforms with the new Boxster/Caymen that's just more competition for the same company.

The R8 is a gorgeous car, why build a less expensive car that looks a lot like it? Yes the R4 would sell, but it would definitely just be taking sales away from the TT or the Boxster/Caymen.

Something tells me the TT would eventually be phased out if this was introduced.

I don't know why Porsche is going to collaborate with this one though, because it's a direct competitor to the Cayman/S.
