Volkswagen Jetta Diesel Wins 2009 Green Car of the Year

This is an important time for ‘green cars,’ even amid some of the most challenging times the auto industry has ever seen. The reasons are clear. In many ways, ‘green’ cars represent the future of the auto industry and the products that will enable our mobility in the years to come.

It’s no longer an option for automakers to address the efficiency and environmental impact of new models, but rather an imperative. It will become even more so as environmental performance, in all its forms, becomes a greater touchstone for new car buyers.

In fact, environmental performance already is viewed as an important measure of a new car. While not yet on par with more traditional touchstones such as safety or quality, environmental performance – especially when it includes higher fuel economy and lower carbon emissions – has taken on greater meaning in this era of high and unstable fuel costs.

This car in a wagon version was my first choice, unfortunately in 2007 you couldn't buy the diesel version. This would have been my family car to haul everyone around in.

So an SUV wins for 2006 (Mariner), again for 2007 (Tahoe), and now we have a diesel.

Perfect car for a short commute if you are buying and concerned about resale values. When I bought my '98 New Beetle TDI back in 1998, it took over 2 years before the resale dropped to the purchase price!
After 10 years its still worth over 40% of the new price.

Our '09 Jetta TDI wagon is being built (I believe in Germany, not Mexico) right now, and should arrive the first week of January. I'd like to figure out how to add the paddle shifters to the DSG like on the Audi A3 or VW GTI...
