Does This Video Prove Auto Spies Agent 001 Should Have Bob Lutz's Job?
The way the media is portraying the current situation with the Detroit auto companies, you would think the problems they have today just snuck up on them and they are a victim of poor circumstances.

And when the executives speak they try to reaffirm that they were caught off guard.

But the video I'm about to show you illustrates the most glaring problem that has plagued Detroit for over 30 years.

DENIAL.

Let's take a look back at the 2007 NY Auto Show (4/07) just before gas prices were ready to blast off and listen to their insight just before all hell broke loose with gas prices.

Dagen McDowell of Fox News 'Your World With Neil Cavuto' 'interviews Donald Buffamanti, Founder of AutoSpies.com and compares his comments to GM's Bob Lutz when they discuss the question "Do US automakers have the right product mix if gas prices go through the roof?"

Watch the video and see who was right. Agent 001 or industry legend Bob Lutz.

The answer may surprise you!

Maybe 001 should be getting the big CEO contract?

You be the judge.

*When Dagan refers to a writer telling her the Cobalt was not in the same league against the Honda Civic, she was referring to my comments I made to her before the interview.

Bob Lutz would fix the Autospies home page to stop the stories bouncing up and down in the column because of the top story box. It's annoying. You go to click an article and it jumps up or down the page and you click on a different story.

Fix it 001 and put spell check in for 009.

Some words of wisdom 001! Chev is now making an efficient Cobalt equivalent to the Civic's fuel mileage in there UFE version, although not as safe as the Civic! No where close! Honda is still number one in safety and economy for small cars. I would like to see Agent001 in charge of Chev instead of Luts, he has almost sunk chev with his bad moves!

Lutz isn't in charge of GM.

Stevenv1999,

You are right. Bob Lutz is not the head of GM. Rick Wagoner is the CEO. (Wagoner is a native of Richmond, Virginia. He is almost exactly my age and attended a high school about 2 miles away from mine. But I digress.)

That said, Wagoner is the "money man" (finance, accounting) at GM, while Lutz is the "car man" (engineering, design, product planning) extraordinaire. Lutz has been at GM for only a few years, but he has also worked at Ford and Chrysler for many years. His reputation in the industry is mythic. The only other product-oriented auto executive of similar stature in modern times would be Ferdinand Piech at Porsche/Volkswagen/Audi.

Before any other bloggers eviscerate me for not including Lee Iacocca in this select company, let me remind you that Iacocca is retired while the other guys are still active.

Iacocca deserves credit for developing the Mustang while at Ford and the modern minivan while at Chrysler. However, his forte was primarily marketing and sales, while Lutz and Piech are more product-and-engineering-oriented.

They only thing i hate is that my countries' economy is going down the toilet because incompetent executives can't think their way out of a paper bag.

And if you think a Cobalt or an Aveo is an answer to a Civic, you've drank the Kool-Aid yourself.

Just because you HAVE a small car doesn't mean it will sell.

It has to be a GOOD small car.

And the strategy that you can fix everything with marketing and advertising is flawed in today's society.

And I'm not implying that Lutz is bad here, i like him a lot and I wish GM and the others had more guys like him.

BUT, he isn't in charge and has to pump what they got whether he likes it or not.

And a guy with HIS knowledge KNOWS the Aveo and Cobalt aren't Civic killers.

i always find it hilarious when people that know nothing about cars, think GM is the only one making gas guzzlers lol. Perception has to be one of the US Auto makers worst enemies, talk to any random person about them and you would swear everything has a V8 and gets 14mpg
