Buick And Tiger Woods Part Ways After 9 Years

Tiger Woods should do it for free. GM has paid him a ton of money over the years. If I were Tiger, as a sign of gratitude/solidarity, I would do it, it would be good for Tiger and GM. Showing class during difficult times.

If I had Tiger Woods' money, fame, and fanbase, I definately would. GM makes great cars, and GM is getting so much bad press b/c it's trendy in the Media to scapegoat Detroit.

If Tiger Woods got on SportsCenter or something like that, and announced that he would continue his Buick contract for free while explaining that he's doing so because he believes in GM and GM products, it would do wonders.

But let's be reasonable here, why would any overpaid athlete or celebrity do that? How dare I suggest that any athletes or celebrities are overpaid. Time to get back to bashing the big3!! we're wasting time here!!

Tiger supports Buick becuase he is the spokesman for them. Now the true test of loyalty will be if he buys a Buick with his own money.

There is only one job I would do for free and that is to be the CEO of an amalgamated North American car group made up of all the big auto industry firms facing insolvency. My only condition would be legislated dictatorial powers over the industry.

Audiphile, the Cobalt SS has won several high-performance compact comparisons. It and the regular Cobalt are worlds apart--amazing engine and it's supposed to have decent handling too.

It's all about perception, which isn't good regarding GM. And it's not all about product either. When GM announces that they will go out of business without a bailout, do you think share prices go up? Use your head man.

All I knew about the Chevy Cobalt was that the base model was very unimpressive. I didn't know anything about the Cobalt SS. That's why I put that caveat in my earlier post.

Maaaaan F%#K GM let tiger woods live....GM needs a bail out not tiger woods he is good....the hell with working for free at the end of the day its all about how much you made. Im sorry I dont work for free unless your my family thats it everyone else is getting charged...GM is still going to make the same shit if the get bailed out the....the cars and trucks (except Caddy) will still depreciate %50 or more its first year weve made these F*%KERS rich for years now what about the working men and women. what will they benefit from the big 3 bailout. I say lets bail them out but every working class person in the USA should get %40 off any and every GM car. am i wrong for saying that?

Well, you have a point,

Domestics do depreciate faster than most others. Reason being... public perception is bad. This IS changing though, just look at the 2008 CTS vs the 2007 CTS. Resale values have JUMPED, which sucks for me b/c I wanted to buy a 1 or 2 yr used 2008 CTS for beans!! Now I have to pay more.... can't ever win I tell ya.

Either way, if the gov. really was serious about helping the big3, they would have to realize that a good market would eliminate the need for any Loans to the Big3.

My suggestions (and by all means please chime in):
1) Stop non-crude users from speculating on oil futures. Only people who can buy energy contracts should be oil refineries, power plants, etc. Stop the Wall St. Criminals from hyper-inflating demand.

2) Tax Gasoline to $2.60-$3.00/gallon to control demand, limit GHG emissions, but not hurt families with minivans or businesses that rely on Trucks. Also, for us auto enthusiasts - we can still run our sports cars and muscle cars (hell we are a minority, lets be honest. Let us have our fun)

3) Provide a $2000 Rebate on all Big3 new-car sales, a $4000 rebate on all high-mileage Big3 new-car sales , and $1000 rebate on all imports built in USA. Do so on a year-at-a-time basis, until the markets pick back up.

4) Prevent California and the other whimsidaisical green idiot states from imposing their own emissions/mileage standards. These are Federal territory, keep the crazies in California in check.

5) Make CAFE rules reasonable (30mpg cars, 21mpg trucks). Use the variable gas tax posted above to control fuel economy and CO2 emissions. Use this gas tax to invest in green-petroleum, hybrids, hydrogen and the whole range of new technologies to improve efficiency, economy and costs.

6) Institute higher CAFE regulations when the industry has fully achieved the 30/21mpg suggested above (let the industry make some profits first though). Only do so if really needed, if we develope green-petroleum that is carbon-neutral (from algae), then we should try to regulate economy through fuel taxing like in Europe.

7) Stop killing the automakers with the diesel emissions regulations, they're absurd!!!!! In 2006, your average diesel engine put out something like 1/100th of a diesel engine in 1990, with no particulate filter!! Then in 2007, new regulations came into effect that required DPF (particulate filters). This has a whole slew of issues associated with it. Come 2010, the regulations get even more ridiculous!!

I say leave the 2007-2009 regulations in place until, lets say 2015. Let the automakers get a grip on the DPF technology first. The Big3 would LOVE to offer small diesels, but the business case is very weak thanks to the extra development costs, hardware costs, warranty costs (both dollars and public perception), and the fact that gas is so much cheaper than diesel!!

It's a shame that GM is so hard up that they have to severe a long-standing, well-known relationship with someone like Tiger Woods.

But frankly I always wondered why they used Tiger Woods so long as a spokesman for Buick. I know why they would want to hire someone like Woods in the first place - they wanted to give the Buick brand a younger, more glamourous image. Unfortunately, Buick still has one of the oldest, least "cool" demographic franchises in the business.

It's analagous to the situation CBS News is in. I know WHY they hired Katie Couric, but their ratings are even lower than they were during the Dan Rather regime. Why CBS doesn't buy out Katie's contract and try something else is beyond me.
