Only one has a low range. What a sad state for SUVs. I am one of the .05% that actually have a SUV for off-road use I'm find it harder and harder to find acapable 4WD vehcile.

All this segment is now is station wagons on stilts.

I am amongst the 10% that actually go off road too! Very sad list if you want to go off road. Nice (cars) suv's though. And I am a Honda owner and the CRV is the last vehicle I would want to own because it only carries 5 barely and the Ford Escape is better on gas! I like the Rav -4 much better or the chev's Buick Enclave sounds better.

and have any of you ever tried taking a CRV offroad?
I have... trust me, you wouldn't wanna do that! It's one of the worst offroading cars out there.. even a 2WD vehicle will be better offroad. The main reason is the torque-less engine. The moment you get stuck, all the car does is produce a crying sound. The wheels dont even spin!!!

The Ford Escape is better on gas than the CRV, I am not a huge fan of the CRV because it is too small and inefficient and it also lacks torque.

I really like the CRV as a compact utility vehicle. A long time ago I drove the first generation, and really hated it. I thought it was unrefined and slow, but I test drove the new generation CRV and came away really impressed. Build quality seemed excellent, the engine and drive train operated smoothly, the ride was comfortable and quiet, and the fuel economy was decent (averaged 24 mpg). The interior was quite nicely done too. I think for the purpose it was designed for, Honda did an excellent job.

Another compact utility vehicle I like is the Subaru Forester. I rented one by chance for an entire week, and now understand why so many people love their Foresters. It's not flashy, but has a comfortable car-like ride, refined manners, is well built and practical, and also features one of the best all wheel drive systems.
