Funny how far ahead we were in the music space compared to the Apple's of the world
After seeing all the announcements of the GROUNDBREAKING music services from Apple, I had to chuckle for two reasons:
1. Because all the analysts are praising Apple for how far ahead their thinking is...
and
2. Because my boatload of Apple stock went over $50 today!
I thought you guys and gals might like a look back into 001's past and to see how far ahead we were in the music space at MP3.com back in the day.
Check out this MP3.com press release from November 2000 and see how much further Apple and the record companies have to go before our music collections can do this...
New Technology Provides Access to Music Collection From Multiple Devices
(7 Nov 2000)
SAN DIEGO, Nov. 7/PRNewswire/ -- Mobility is a vital component of new digital technology and consumers are increasingly demanding anytime/anywhere access to information and entertainment. In a move designed to facilitate this access, music lovers can now synchronize their digital music collection and event listings to all their web-enabled devices through the implementation of newly developed technology.
MP3.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:MPPP) today announced it will provide its millions of users access to fusionOne's 1-Click Sync(TM) technology, designed to enable the instant synchronization of MP3 audio files and event listings from MP3.com (http://www.mp3.com/) to a user's collection of online and offline devices to include PCs, PDAs and mobile phones. The service is made possible through a partnership between MP3.com and fusionOne.
"We believe that our partnership with fusionOne provides a groundbreaking service to our users," said Michael Robertson, chairman and chief executive officer of MP3.com (http://www.mp3.com/). "Now, not only will users have online access to their favorite songs on MP3.com, but they will also be able to enjoy them from other computing devices that support MP3 files. We look forward to working closely with fusionOne to broaden this service to even more devices, including automobiles and mobile phones."
Visitors to MP3.com can now select songs, files or events available for download from the web site and fusionOne's 1-Click Sync is designed to automatically sync the content to any fusionOne-enabled device that supports that class of content, whether it be a PC, handheld device, mobile phone, or web application. If the user is not a fusionOne subscriber, fusionOne software can be downloaded for free on the site.
"Our relationship with fusionOne demonstrates the way in which we are seeking to add optimum value for our strategic partners by making their service ubiquitous throughout the MP3.com environment," said Donald Buffamanti, senior vice president of business development at MP3.com. "By integrating innovative technology into the fabric of our site, we are able to provide millions of users with one-click access to new services. We invite forward-looking technology companies to contact us with their visions for growing and enhancing the online digital experience."
The fusionOne service is based on a unique technology architecture designed to rapidly synchronize information across both compatible and traditionally incompatible systems, providing synchronization for personal digital information such as calendar, contacts, email, bookmarks and files.
"Traditionally, file synchronization has been limited to device-to-device sync. Through this partnership with MP3.com, we are revolutionizing the industry's approach to sync by expanding the application to online files and content," said Rick Onyon, president and CEO of fusionOne. "Now, when MP3.com users download a selection, their song will appear on all of their personal devices, without the need to duplicate the downloading process."
Technology companies interested in more information on integrating their services with MP3.com should contact the company's business development division.
