BMW 7 Series and its amazing Headlights System
It is widely known by now that the new BMW 7 Series excels mostly with its latest technology. BMW wanted to emphasize the fact that the new 7 Series will stand out, not only with its new design, but especially with the latest and more advanced technology that could be seen in vehicle.

Several videos and articles on the BMW 7 Series Technology have been posted in the last several months, but to me it seems like each time there is something new to learn about the new 7er.

One of the feature that really stands out is the new Adaptive Headlight Control System. While the adaptive headlights are nothing new really in a BMW, the latest technology in the 7 series is a whole another story.

The Adaptive Headlights use swiveling headlights that always point in the direction the vehicle is steering so therefore the road ahead is better illuminated and obstacles become visible sooner.

This car is absolutely amazing. The more I see it, the more I like it. I've seen my second one yesterday, and wow, it has so much road presence! Even the S class doesn't have that much road presence imo.

Lexus LS 460 has had this from 2007 and the LS 600 as added LED Headlamps. Why is this High Tech ? BMW is still behind Lexus..

Yeah duh, must luxury brand companies have had adaptive headlights on a few of their cars for the past few years. Look closer, it isn't saying that the adaptive headlights are new to the 7, it is talking about the further evolution of the headlights and how their adaptive abilities have been taken to the next level.

Also, the whole LED factor has nothing to do with adaptive headlights as the LEDs on the LS600h are not adaptive they are fixed.

Adaptive headlights have been around for awhile and if anything BMW is ahead of Lexus in that area of technology because they have brought it to all of their cars and, as this article shows, are coming out with further ways of enhancing their product.

actually the LEDs are not fixed, they are also adapative

Not really, I never noticed the adaptive lighting when we had an RX330.

LED Low-Beam Headlamps

The LS 600h is equipped with the world’s first application of low-beam LED headlight technology, offering excellent illumination and significantly improved durability over conventional lighting systems. Based on multiple LED lamp design principles explored in the LF-X concept car, the new system employs a 5-lamp low-beam configuration. Three upward oriented LED lamps focus high intensity illumination directly ahead via an overlapping horizontal array of three projector lenses.

The remaining two, downward oriented LED lamps employ a shielded parabolic cylinder to create wide angle light projection the three projector lenses are fitted with a transparent blue ring, giving the Lexus hybridflagship a unique, readily identifiable headlamp signature.

The LS 600h’s low-beam LED lamps boast instantaneous lighting, in approximately 0.1 seconds, emit a white-light colour closest to that of natural daylight and have an lifespan longer than conventional lighting systems, with minimal degradation in light intensity. The combination of a three lamp projector array and twin lamp parabolic reflector optimises illumination across the full width of the road ahead, significantly improving visibility of the opposite side of the road with no increase in glare to oncoming traffic.

If you want to read more this is a pretty good limk to Lex Tech....

old Honda Legend also has something like this but simpler a bit.

I'm sure it is great, but hope that it doesn't affect drivers in other cars.

I'm astounded that you choose to compare the advances mentioned in this article to a old "Honda" Legend. If you care to respond to this I challenge you to list each feature point by point and how it applies to the technology in an old "Honda" Legend

Hey, don't get too touchy.

Here you go, read some techno details from 2005 Honda:
http://world.honda.com/Tokyo2005/safety/

Honda calls it: Adaptive Front Lighting System. Developed in 2003

Also please take a look in the following Patent by Honda: http://www.patents.com/Operation-checking-adaptive-front-lighting-system/US7440828/en-US/

Well.. Once again, Honda license patents to BMW.

Did you know that every BMW owner payed indirectly to Honda due to VTEC patent?

Be well

I don't see what the big deal is. My Passat has had this available since 2006 and most Audis have had it for quite some time now too.

I agree that its a cool feature but don't understand what the fuss is about.

Please point me in the direction of any evidence you have that says your Passat has the same system or capabilities as the one on this vehicle.

I own one car. I turn the wheel to the left and wow, look at that, the beam does the same. While moving of course. In a stationary position only the cornering lamps come on.

Search this on youtube for a cool vid showing the car going through it's self check upon start up. Much like how most Xenon do the up/down the Passat does the side to side motion as well.

Enjoy

this adaptive lighting is really nothing new.. Jesus, you can have it on a 4 cylinder Camry. and in fact, in asia market, it is the standard equipment on all 4 cylinder Camry.

and before you say this light not only turn left right, it also does up and down, well.. welcome to 2006. check out Acura MDX.

however, i do give credit to BMW for combining those two features into one.

"Optimum light for every situation
New Opel Insignia is available with an adaptive headlamp system - light distribution automatically adapts to speed and road profile
Article of 02.10.2008
Lippstadt / Rüsselsheim, October 2008. The new Opel Insignia is the first mid-class vehicle in the world to be available with an adaptive headlamp system. This adapts automatically to the respective road profile and the visibility conditions, thus providing a significant increase in active safety.
The so-called AFL system (Adaptive Forward Lighting) was developed jointly by Hella and Opel. It is based on powerful bi-xenon headlamps and has nine different lighting functions: Town light, pedestrian area light, country light, motorway light, adverse weather light, static cornering light, dynamic bend lighting and high beam, as well as a camera-based assistance function for automatic high beam switching.
At speeds below 50 km/h, town light provides a wider light distribution at reduced range, helping drivers to see pedestrians on the edge of the road better.
The pedestrian area light, which is activated at speeds between 5 and 30 km/h has been designed for zones where drivers must exercise extreme caution. The light cone of both headlamps is swiveled by eight degrees towards each side of the road, allowing even earlier detection of children at play.

The country light illuminates the left and right-hand edges of the road more brightly and widely than the conventional low beam. It is activated at speeds between 50 and 100 km/h." ...............

Pay attention people, because I am going to try to explain this concept to you. Previous adaptive headlights were simply motorized and able to direct light in the direction that the car was traveling. This article is talking about the next level in the evolution of this technology. In addition to directing the light in the optimal direction, the car automatically senses speed and alters the intensity of the light to fit the driving conditions. In other words, BMW is providing you with the optimum lighting in every situation and is doing it automatically. It is a great feature.

Toyo, Nissan, & Honda if you here me start making this standard in all your bread and butter cars, the middle class are the most important demographic of people right now

Wow, so many people who don't actually read...

I'm really excited for the new 7. Can't wait to see it in person. Not only is it a technological tour de force, but it can go toe-to-toe with the S550 and A8 as having one of the nicest interiors in this class, it looks great and the performance will be phenomenal.
