Chevy Volt production will cost GM $750 million
At the congressional hearings last week, GM, Chrysler and Ford made it a point to flaunt Detroit’s hybrids and electric cars. Again Ford, who is in the best shape out of the three, shined bright as CEO Alan Mulally drove up to D.C. in a Ford Escape Hybrid and talked up the company’s new 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid which the company says gets 6 mpg more in the city than its Japanese rival - the Toyota Camry Hybrid.

Chrysler’s Nardelli drove up to the congressional hearings in an Aspen Hybrid, an SUV that the company doesn’t even produce anymore. Wagoner, on the other hand, drove up in a prototype of the upcoming Chevrolet Volt - a plug-in hybrid car that GM says won’t be profitable for at least another decade.

Are you really a UAW member. If you are you should get an education in economic reality.

Why would a typical UAW member need an education in economics? They aren't working with finances, they are doing assembly and quality control.

I do give GM credit with the Volt. At least they are finally trying to make an effort.

Too bad they didn't use the new Camaro money and time for the Volt. If they had, the Volt would have already been in production for a year. Personally, I'd have loved to see 20,000 American-made electric cars driving around right now!

What a missed opportunity. Sad to say, but with GM, its always too little, too late.

The thing is the Volt is American branded not made. Its about as american as that ambrocombre and fitch t -shirt company that has their shirts made in india or china. You cant win as the best electric car maker when the competition can sell their car for half as much and get nearly or just as good mileage.

thstone the technology for the Volt is being developed as GM goes. The sum of money GM spent rebodying the Holden Zeta/VE chassis into the Camaro is tiny compared to what it would take to speed up the developments of the technology used in the Volt.

veyron, show me any form of proof that the Volt technology is anything but American made. Quit talking outta your butt like a 12 year old.
