Spy Photos: BMW X6 M

The 2010 BMW X6 M seems to be in the final testing stages and it has been spotted once again near the BMW Plant in Spartanburg, SC. Our friend Palbay was there once again snapping photos of this controversial BMW //M model.

The X6 M has never been confirmed by BMW and all the hints that we received over the last months were about “the new performance twins”. The BMW X6 M rumors have been received with skepticism by the bimmer fans, majority of them disagreeing with BMW’s intention of adding more M performance models to the SAV/SAC market.

The BMW X5 M is another model that was spotted several times near Spartanburg, but it is expected to make its debut after the X6 M.

The BMW X6 M will compete for the market with Porsche’s Cayenne Turbo and Mercedes-Benz’s ML63 AMG.

Pricing? Unknown at the time, but do expect a premium price that will make the X6 M one of the most expensive BMWs.

Since BMW has not announced anything exciting for the Detroit Show, I’m wondering if we will see the X6 M displayed there.

X6 is the best looking SUV in production!

Is it really an SUV?...Really?

It's more of a cross-over. I was thinking the X6 is more in competition against the FX. The only reason why its said to be going against the Cayenne Turbo and ML63 is because of the performance factor.

i agree, it doesnt make any sense given the current economic climate, not to mention to have an X5, and X6 M is just pointless, who needs to high powered gas guzzling low volume suvs in their lineup....not sure who sighned off onthat idea

I agree... BUT what's getting lost in all the "doesn't make sense" talk that comes up every time to X6 is mentioned is the fact that I don't think it's "supposed" to make sense, or that it even has to. Not to us anyway. Does anyone "need" a 500hp Cayenne Turbo or ML63 AMG? A supercharged Range Rover? No, no, and no. But they make them. And people buy them. So why shouldn't BMW come out with a competitor that trumps all of them in driving dynamics (which the X6 does handily) and looks unique instead of like a box that happens to have a massively powerful engine?

Am I going to buy an X6? No, I'm not blowing $100k on a racecar SUV. But would I buy one over those other vehicles? In that case, since more than likely if I had that kind of money I'd also have other vehicles, yes, I absolutely would. If I won the Mega Millions, I'd roll an X6, and people looking at these vehicles should and would consider an X6. They have the money so a vehicle like these actually can make sense, because they make a statement. The rest of us "normal" people can complain all we want that they don't make sense, but at the end of the day, we're not the target demographic for these things anyway. They don't have to make sense to us, just like an Accord probably wouldn't appeal to most of the obscenely wealthy.

yeah but Jrob if thats the case than there was no need to shelve the lightweight M3 variant, or the 8 series......the X6M justdoesnt make sense....as either of those 2 cars make more sense, and why does BMW need both the X5 and X6 M to be M vehicles, the X6 is the performance variant of the X5(suppose to be), so why do an X5 M it will be a hard sale against the X6 as the X5 is way more pratical...not to mention BMW will have 2 competitors for only 2 a niche as small as 2 vehicles the Ml63amg(which doesnt sell well) and the Cayenne turbo, there is no other competition in that segment other than those 2 cars.....again whats the point lol, half the segment willbe BMW cars huh.....again who sighned off that one

bmwdrvr, that part I agree with you on, I don't see the point of making both an X5 M and X6 M. I haven't heard 100% that BMW is actually coming out with an X5 M though. If they do, maybe BMW figures enough people want a 7 passenger version of their race SUV for it to be worthwhile. Personally I'd rather see them make an M7, or come out with the 8-Series.

But all that is beside the point, the fact is the X6 M on its own is every bit as justifiable as an ML63 AMG, Cayenne Turbo, and other vehicles in that price and performance stratosphere.

An "M" SUV is an oxymoron.

Agree with JRobUSC. Let the market decide if "this vehicle makes sense."

The market has already "decided". The X6 sold out for 2008.

You have to realize that there is a big market of people who prefer an SUV-type vehicle over a sedan and they are willing to pay for a sport version.

Take for example, the several million current X5 owners. As soon as their kids are grown, many of them will prefer to move up to an X6 instead of a 5-series sedan. Why push SUV owners back into a sedan? Its pretty logical marketing.

Great looking car but no utlity to it. I understand why it is sold out, but it now off road capabilities, no trunk space, and only children fit in the back. If you have small kids, don't need the SUV factor but want something cool looking with some performance, great car. There are a lot of those buyers out there, I'm just not one of them. That's why I have a Jeep SRT8. Best of all worlds.

Well I sat in the backseat of the X6 at the LA Auto Show and I'm about 5'9.....my head was centimeters away from brushing the headliner!

I'm 5'11" and fit back there with a hat on. Perhaps you're built like Michael Phelps -- all torso, proportionately small legs. To each his/her own.

"The engine is rumored to output 580 horsepower making the X6 M a true performance model."

High horsepower does not a performance model make.

this thing should be called the "Ultimate Driving Beast" if that thing gets the V10 with the twin turbos. then audi would have to put the RS6 engine in a smaller competing truck....:)
