Stud or Dud? 2010 BMW Z4 sDrive35i Roadster

Stud or Dud? 2010 BMW Z4 sDrive35i Roadster
Flame surfacing is evolving and this new Z4 is proof of that fact.

Harshly criticized  initially, the former Z4 certainly doesn't turn heads the way it did when it was new, but the design elements incorporated into the outgoing Z4 have made their way into not only other BMW vehicles, but other makes as well.

AutoSpies.com showed you the first official photos of the newest Z4, the 2010 Z4 sDrive35i is certainly evolutionary as opposed to revolutionary like the first Z4.  But that is not a bad thing in this Agents' opinion.

But you don't read AutoSpies.com to read our opinion, you come here to share your opinion.

So we ask you, do you think the new Z4 is a STUD, or is it a DUD?

Brand New BMW Z4

Stud, except from this angle:

2009 BMW Z4

It's going to take a while for the front to grow on me; very different from what they've released recently.

I really hope they have a coupe too and not just the convertible.

Not everyone thinks it is a Stud, hence the name. If we told you from the onset what to think, where would be the fun in that?

Yeah man definitely it is a STUD but do you think that people might opt to go for the 1-series because it is almost as good as a roadster and it's only0.5 secconds slower to sixty and has a limited speed of 155mph where as this goes up to 150mph.....

A tremendous improvement!

A far more sophisticated and balanced design in every way, thankfully devoid of almost all the frivolously whimsical flourishes that made the 1st gen so polarizing.

Solid B effort

Stud for sure!

Question for all though. What chance you think this car would have ended up with this stitched dash if it weren't for the new Cadillac CTS? Who sets the trends now? To bad they are just getting back into the trend setting mode right before going under???

Are you serious? BMW has had stitched leather dashes available on higher-end models for years. The CTS's dash isn't even leather, it's vinyl.

jasaerojasaero - 12/14/2008 4:14:10 PM

Well no crap? I am talking sub-$40,000 price point stitched dash's in general. This was unseen before the CTS and now is quite common.

jasaerojasaero - 12/14/2008 4:17:05 PM

Not to mention even my uncles 745Li has very little stitched leather or vinyl while being pretty loaded and the stitched dash on the CTS is standard issue.

Since when has a Porsche existed in the $30-50K range?? I am speaking specifically to cars in this lower price segment that the CTS, Z4, and even new Jag XF are in. Even cars priced along the lines of the XF had no stitched dashes until the CTS came along.

BMW has a had extend leather option (leather dash, sunvisors,etc..) since 1997 on the Z cars. jasaero I would do 10 seconds of research before commenting.

a small, low, two-passenger convertible appeals to a different market than a larger, more upright, four-passenger coupe or convertible.

it won't cannibalize sales from the 3 series. the last generation didn't either.

I also don't get why it needs the whole sDrive bit. It's like making a new badge on all BMW models that are cars as opposed to motorcycles. This is the "BMW Z4 s4-TractionDrive35i".... might as well make a badge for the sake of the windshield being present also.

STUD...... I had the Z3 when it first came out and it was my favorite car ever, but just not practical as my daily vehicle. The next version, the first Z4, was too ugly as compared to the Z3. BUT now BMW found a way to combine the retro elegance of the Z3 with a modern twist of the Z4. THIS CAR WILL SELL!

I like this version equally - except for the convertible hardtop. That's a deal killer for me as I'me sure you can't fit 2 sets of golf clubs in 'er with the top down..

That will really be unnecessary. The 135i and 335i already achieve sub-5 sec 0-60 times with the N54 engine. This car, which is significantly lighter than either, should be in the high 4s at worst.

"i don't like that the coupe is gone."

I would have to agree, the availability of a soft top vert and fixed roof coupe is superior. The coupe was not only a less compromised performer but also strikingly beautiful, like a piece of art. But I think this car will improve in so many other areas as to cancel it out.

I also agree that, technically, it isn't "better" looking... just different. But there's something I like about it more overall. It looks higher end, more like a less-expensive SL than an SLK competitor.

Agree about sDrive. LOL.

Stud.
A dramatic improvement from the current gen. Looks like they did take some cues from the CS concept. Like the first key line from the kidney grill to the door handle and then the second key line over the rear wheel.
The interior is sporty yet elegant and geared more towards the driver which how it should be.
I think they could have found a more aesthetic way to place the buttons on the center console for the following; selecting the drivetrain and the hand brake control.

sensuous curves and yet more masculine than the previous generation. some of the character lines (particularly the rear wheel arches) remind me of maserati.
