MotiveMagazine Nissan 370z VS. Porsche Cayman S

MotiveMagazine Nissan 370z VS. Porsche Cayman S
You didn't used to be like this, Nissan. Up until the GT-R arrived this year, and with the exception of the 370Z's predecessor, you've spent the last decade building modest SUVs, trucks, and sedans for the masses. Sure, there have been a few hot compacts in there, but your latest Sentra SE-Rs haven't exactly set the enthusiast world ablaze. Now it's all Porsche this, Nürburgring that. It's like we don't even know you anymore. Then, just when it seems like GT-R-a-palooza is dying down, here comes the new Z. First, in spy photos, being trailed by a Porsche Cayman. Then, with Nissan's own staff calling Porsche's baby coupe out as a benchmark. All right, we'll bite.

Disregard the fact that the Cayman S you see here is a 2008. The revised 2009 model wasn't available for our day of testing, but the dynamic changes are minimal and I drove the new car last week. My impressions of the new car are factored into the words, if not the pictures, below.

As similar as the intentions of the Nissan and the Porsche are, you'd never mistake one for the other. Their design commonalities include two headlights, two doors, four tires, and a sloping rear hatch. Actually, they also share polarization. Both are drop-dead gorgeous to some, but each has plenty of enemies. Cayman supporters will say the small Porsche has simple, classic curves that will remain timeless. The hood is shorter and the butt is longer than the Nissan's, a visual reminder that the Porsche's flat-six engine sits behind the driver. Speaking of butts, the 370Z has a huge one, and the verticality of the taillights only makes it seem more ridiculous when the two cars are parked side-by-side. From any angle that isn't straight on from the rear, the new Z has a dynamic flow to it, looking like it's in the business of one thing: going fast. I'd give it the edge on design, just because I'm used to the Cayman and its design seems more static. And small too, despite the fact that the Porsche is actually four inches longer and only a half-inch lower overall than the Z.

" The Cayman is a slightly better sports car, but the 370Z is a slightly better everyday car. And I don't have to tell you it's one hell of a bargain. "

people who cant afford a porsche will buy a nissan. its half the price and will attract the younger buyers. thats why you see more 350z out there than a cayman but hes right about the social status. no one will give you the light of day in a fancy social gathering when you roll up in a nissan. i think the the z and the gtr are the only nissans worth mentioning but i think quality , prestige and image hands down go to cayman.

fortunately at half the price you dont get half the car but a porsche buyer does not go to a nissan salesman after they step out of a porsche dealership just dont happen.

i use to own a 350z and my older bro had a 2006 techart cayman s. with the new z and the guy saying its a better everyday car i want the z and the new cayman s....i accept donations via paypal starting this second hehe.

The 370z is a better platform for modification.

that is so true but i think that the drivers of the new z and the porsche will be pleasantly surprised. i had doubts about the lack of power of the stock porsche when i was in my brothers prior to him techart-ing his cayman and it was still very thrilling just to ride in. i havent driven it before so i cant compare it to my 350z. i guess its the z for the young and the cayman for the more mature. i wish i had both this christmas

btw happy holidays people!

screw the 370 it still cant pull as hard as my 300zx. the best z in the history of nissan PERIOD.

the porsche is just a wannabee of the zx and porsche is garbage production made by adolf and the folks for when they flee from russians. i wrapped my seats with the finest nappa leather and wrapped the dash with leather as well. why spend the premium for a porsche when you can have world class engineering of the 300zx and luxury at its finest. i've also added sat nav that came with my indash dvd player and screen.

the 370z is the ugliest z to come out. i thought the last one was fugly man look at the new one. the devil z is the best old z ever made. that's my new project car. expect it to run 700hp from the crank.

long live pre 2003 nissan z's!

As much as I hate to admit, I do think the 90's models of the Z were the best looking cars of the Z lineup.

I don't mind the new ones, but they just don't give me the same "wow" factor as the TT ones of years past. They are almost too flashy and boy racer. Still a bargain for the price though.

Good job, Nissan. I don't see people cross shopping the two cars that much, but it's good to see that the 370Z came right where the Cayman is for so much less money. Essentially, Nissan is catching up to Porsche's design that's been out for several years. Even though Nissan has possibly matched the Cayman very well, Porsche should still be honored as they are the benchmark. That alone says a book full.

What does preaching the love of your 90ZXTT have to do with this? Yes, it can create a ton of power just like the new ones can with aftermarket turbos (like the 90 needs for massive power). Your car is also a tail happy beast trying to control that power.

With that said, it would be nice if Nissan would get back to a 3.0TT like then for the extra torque. Seems to be doing well for BMW. I actually wouldn't be surprised to see that in the future.

I'll take the Cayman just for the lower hoodline alone!

Wow, good job Nissan. You all have created quite a machine with the 370Z!! Both cars are nice, but in the end, I would choose the Z. Not sure how much they will be cross shopped, as I think they target different age groups. If I were in my 50's or 60's and looking for a status symbol type car, I might be drawn to the Porsche, until then, the Z has my pick as it is on par with performance and in my opinion looks better.

The Z rocks and kicks the Cayman's ass anywhere and anytime. Great job Nissan!! I wish Toyota would start getting jealous and bring back the Supra now.

I don't know about that. From my experience, most Zs tend to slow down when my Cayman S is around. I like the Z though, I catch myself checking them out on the road.

Right a chick that makes twice as much as Z owners.

Absolutely LOVE both cars, but Nissan is going to sell a ton of the new Z's. C'mon, if most of us had the choice with money being no object, of course we would pick the Porsche.

I can't speak for everyone, but money is definitely an object for me. It's just nice to know I can pick up a Z without going into crazy debt, and almost match the Cayman! Thanks Nissan!

001,

You gotta kill those video advertising modules that pop-up in this site. If you by-accident click on one they stick around until you go to another page. Even clicking the "x" does NOTHING! All that is accessible is moving the ad, but that does nothing to ease the annoyance. They are ridiculously annoying and may turn away new customers. Me? I will stick around but, they may tick off the "next" guy. You gotta find an alternative to this for the advertising companies.

Mike.

Like Firefox? Have it.

Those ad modules pop up if your cursor goes over those "keywords" that are underlined and hyperlinked.

Your point?

They are benchmarking what they regard as the best sports car out there and then delivering a product in a more practical and affordable package.

Guess what Gordon Murray, the developer of the legendary McLaren F1 benchmarked?

"...the moment I drove the “little” NSX, all the benchmark cars–Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini–I had been using as references in the development of my car vanished from my mind. Of course the car we would create, the McLaren F1, needed to be faster than the NSX, but the NSX’s ride quality and handling would become our new design target."

Mr. KKX has spoken again.

They're not benchmarking a German car, they're already did the benchmark car:

"The 2009 Nissan 370Z has the whole benchmark package wrapped up with a bow: price, exterior design, interior packaging, performance, features and that X-factor that makes you just want to go out and drive one, and drive it hard. Thinking of the Z-car as a sports car is one thing, but we can honestly say that there's not another sport coupe that can touch the new Z."
