Audi brings back the five-door sedan-hatch. And we like the idea.

In the 1970s, many European carmakers offered four-door cars with a sloped roofline and a large hatch for accessing the cargo hold. Beyond the simple ‘hatchback’ descriptor, designations such as fastback or aeroback were used in cases where the trunk opening remained small. The style even became fashionable in the U.S.—think Buick Century, Oldsmobile Cutlass, or Chevrolet Citation—but the fad was over by the mid-’80s. Only niche vehicles, such as the Saab 9000 or the Mazda 6 hatchback, carried on, as the typical sedan reclaimed its territory.

Today, though, we’re seeing a resurgence of four-doors with wide hatchbacks, led by the German premium brands. The movement is being spearheaded by the styling leaders at Audi, as well as by the somewhat less elegant Porsche Panamera. The shape brings more practicality than a notchback sedan, and it makes for a beautiful, sleek roofline. Plus, they’re kind of ‘70s retro. What’s not to like?

Audi is so confident that customers will go for this style that two models are in the wings: the A5 Sportback, based on the A5 coupe, and the A7—see our spy shots here—which will be positioned between the A6 and A8 sedans. Both vehicles will rely on the same modular architecture, but the A7 is large enough to be positioned comfortably above the A5 Sportback.

With the A5 Sportback comes a new definition of the "Sportback" moniker, which heretofore was applied only to the practical five-door A3. Audi's chief designer, Stefan Sielaff, tells us that now the Sportback designation will stand for these types of slope-back sedans. “You have to look beyond the A3 Sportback. The A5 Sportback is clearly what we have in mind (for the name).”

The upcoming A7 would fit that bill, too, but since there is no notchback,

WHY BOTHER WITH THE A7?????????????????????

Because it's a bigger car that is priced differently. I think the A5 might be a European only car, but we'll see.

who knows what anyone comes out with. I like the 5 door hatch. You get more use out of it. But I would probably be more of a avant guy anyway

The A7 is a CLS competitor. The A5 SB is some sort of new class. It's an A4 hatch basically.

I love 5 door hatches. In the midsized market, everyone sems to have given up on them in the US...Camry once had one, Mazda6 more recently, Malibu Maxx (yech). It's one of the reasons why the Prius is so successful. Bring back the hatches, people!!!

The A7 has been "rumored" for like three years. It doesn't have much to do with the Panamera as Porsche wasn't associated with Audi when they first started developing it. They're not going to be on the same platform or anything so don't start that. Audi has its MLP. Porsche has... whatever it is that Porsche has.

huh? Porsche and Audi have been together for over 50 years. I have a VW 1-ton truck, and every part for it comes in a bag labelled "VW/Porsche/Audi"
Porsche out-sources about 70% of everything they build.
And VW gets most of those contracts.
Porsche isn't an automaker. They are a design and marketing company. VW is all the muscle behind Porsche's brains.
I'd be surprised if the Panamera and A7 looked different from the bottom if you put them both on hoists!

mazda did this with the former and current 6, as did ford with the mondeo lol, people are acting as if they just created some new segment, or brought back something from decades ago, not tomention the long list of european cars that have this style...........its like reinventing the wheel

Sort of like how the X6 isn't a new segment either right?

another idiotic comment from S4, "IS THIS BLOG ABOUT THE X6 NO....IF YOU WANT TO DISCUSS THE X6 CREATE A POST ABOUT ONE AND THAN COMMENT, OTHERWISE STAY OFF A NON X6 RELATED POST.....COMMENTING ON THE X6....." sorry for not praising the Audi god, or for that matter having my own opinion a 5 door hatch is far from original and far from a desighn that hasnt been done in recently......... go away.

Sorry drvr but you just seem very bitter. You can't ever give Audi an ounce of credit. Right now I'm the one who has both an Audi and a BMW. Honestly, I love them both equally and would probably buy a BMW over an Audi right now. A8 > current 7 Series and R8 > everything else but I don't think any other Audi beats any other BMW.

Anyway. It's not Audi saying they're inventing a new segment. Heck, the article doesn't even say that. It says "Audi BRINGS BACK the sedan-hatch," as in it happened before. Hopefully, the A7 will be the best sedan-hatch yet.

you cant bring back something that is still in production. they have never stopped producing a 5 door hatch...so bring back it no....but im sure S4 and his flawed logic wouldnt be able to understand......let me guess they brought back the coupe when the a5 came out also

The A5 SB looks very good, will be a groundbreaker.
Theres an increased demand now for the larger 5 door luxury car. I think it may steal a few sales from the A6 now.
And FYI the A7 is due 2011.

You may be right about that, but I assume the A5 SB will be significantly more tossable. We need a car that is roomier than an a5 (Rode in one last year in Europe: 4 adults to the movies? Hardly!), not as sensible as an A4 (I love mine but the 2009 edition looks like a Civic on steroids to me), not as dorky as a variant (good family man car, but what if you're past the 2.1 rugrats?), sportier than an A6 (drove one yesterday and though a fine straight-line cruiser it's got too much derriere for any fast-footing), more practical than a sedan and more luxurious than a VW-CC. I cannot _wait_ for the A5 Sportback to arrive!

agree, this 5 door hatch thing is not new, many carmakers are doing them. Like Mazda, Ford, also French car makers.

btw Audi designs are already very round, i hope this new 5 door hatch doesn't end up looking like an egg-shape.
