Chrysler And GM Revive Merger Talks

Chrysler And GM Revive Merger Talks
General Motors and Chrysler have reopened merger talks, with Chrysler's private owners signaling a willingness to give away part of its stake in the automaker, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday, citing people familiar with the discussions.

GM spokesman Tony Cervone said GM's stance on the merger talks has not changed, however, since the automaker suspended them when it announced third-quarter earnings in November.

With cash running low at both companies, Chrysler majority owner Cerberus Capital Management took the initiative to restart discussions that sputtered just weeks ago, the paper said.

Viper, Corvette, Challenger, Camaro should form a new American Car Compnay under 1 Dealership, 1-roof for American Sports Cars.

Too bad the Studabaker Avanti didn't survive to join these cars. The Big 3 killed that nice car when they drove Studabaker out of town.

I really hope this doesn't happen, but if it does I hope Chrysler controls GM. But I highly doubt that will happen. I like some of Gm's brands, but I think most are not worth keeping. Japanese cars are reliable and are at reasonable prices(mostly) and that's why the Japanese brands are doing better than the American car companies. GM has so many cars where the base price on the car is the most bare-boned car you'll ever buy. Even some Chrysler cars are like that but not as bare-boned as the GM cars. They need to learn from the Japanese and German auto makers. That's the only way they'll succeed.

GM really aren't in a position to merge with anyone right now, and certainly not another weak auto maker.

Well I don't think it'll happen, and I don't think it'd be a good thing anyway. GM is already bloated with brands, so the only reason they'd want to get hold of Chrysler is for production capacity, which isn't really an issue right now......

I fully agree with you about Jeep (and perhaps Dodge trucks) though, it's about the only Chrysler brand worh saving, and I think that even if the worst comes to the wost Jeep will live on elsewhere.

Let's face it....Chrysler is an antiquated brand that makes ugly, unreliable, horribly fuel-inefficient cars that, aside from the Viper, Challenger, and minivans, aren't worth saving. Dodge trucks, though good, have never achieved the popularity or status of Ford and GM models. Jeep's only current redeeming virtue is the Wrangler as the Cherokee had become bloated and expensive. The brand simply needs to die, guys. GM has a much more promising product portfolio and is in a better position to bounce back financially if they make the right decisions. Even at GM, some brands need to die...namely Buick, Pontiac, Hummer, and GMC truck. Chevy, Cadillac, and Saturn are their strongest divisions right now. They definitely should keep Opel and Holden, and strongly consider keeping Saab around. The better models from the jettisoned divisions can be rebadged in the short term as necessary just like they do outside the US, and getting rid of the rest will reduce redundancy in the product line (we really dont need a GMC Acadia, Saturn Outlook, Buick, and Chevy crossover, even if they each have their own look and features...enough said

The talks went something like this...

"Hey Chrysler, our company is all F'd up - and since yours is to, lets merge. Two negatives maike a positive right?"

Or maybe this...

"Hey GM, we're about to go bankrupt... you too? That's too bad. Hey, maybe if we merge, the government will realize we are too big to fail like those stinkin banks... and then they'll start pumping billions in here for a change. Oh! You agree? Great!
