Vw developing 2-liter city car
Volkswagen announced more than a year ago that it was laboring on a venture to bring its 1-Liter 2002 concept to production reality. The 3-wheeled low-lying totally sleek design still seems a little unrealistic, but now VW is said to be making a slightly larger, more practical city car that’s aiming for the 2L/100km (117.6mpg) fuel economy rating.
The fresh ‘2-Liter’ vehicle is anticipated to be patterned on a breifer version of the up! that will is set to go into production in 2009 as reported by Auto Motor & Sport.

We all know that VW has the technology to do this (last stats I saw indicated that VW spends the most money on research of all auto-makers).
But why don't they bring their already-good cars to the US?
The Fit and Versa are practically knock-offs of VW's mini-Golf lines (Polo and Lupo)... VW has been the leader in cars that are small on the outside and big on the inside for decades.
But they're giving that up (in North America) to the competition.

I know the most common answer is high European wages and low US prices. But they build these in Mexico too, I believe.....

Nonsence. The Fit is a small car with higher roofline and a tiny bit of more wheelbase in order to gain as much interior space as possible. Versa is just the same only worse and uglier. Polo and Lupo on the other hand are just small cars with nothing special or innovative in them. By no means were they any inspiration for tall cars like Fit.

Well, I can't recall any their car who offered anything special in this category. The leader was in fact.... the Mercedes with its A-class, one of my favourite cars because it was smart - the wheelbase was maximised (by putting wheels as close the bumpers as possible) and the height increased to provide generous interior space in an extremely short car. The double floor and an engine submerging during a crash allowed for shorter crumple zone. That was the true leader.

Simply because people won't buy it. You don't want to drive close to the huge SUVs and pick-up's (50% of passanger vehicles in the U.S) in a small, tiny and not very safe European econobox.

What VW needs to do is to revive the Audi A1 3L TDI, a tiny lightweight aluminium car truly built for fuel economy with very little power but real life fully achievable combined mileage of 67,2 (diesel). And the Audi A2 was actually conceptually similar to the Mercedes A-class.

I wouldn't drive a three wheeled car! I would be scared of it tipping over. I would like this with 4 tires. Impressive mileage!
