Obama praises Bush for auto loan, says automakers must end bad management practices
President-elect (you won’t be hearing that much longer) praised the Bush Administration to provide $17.4 billion in loans to bail out General Motors and Chrysler. However, he said there is still more work to do and that automakers must end “bad management practices.”
“With the short-term assistance provided by this package, the auto companies must bring all their stakeholders together — including labor, dealers, creditors and suppliers — to make the hard choices necessary to achieve long-term viability,” Obama said in a statement.
Under the term of the deal GM and Chrysler will have access to $4 billion on Dec. 29.

Great, now when Obama takes office we can start fixing this thing. Whatever it takes- we send 700 billion to middle east for oil every year. So even a couple trillion to develop and manufacture cars that would make us energy independent and keep our manufacturing sector going without losing jobs would be worth it. We'd get it back in a few years only once we stopped sending 700 billion a year to middle east.

Bush totally mismanaged our tax dollars. Think of what could have been done if all the money being spent in Iraq was spent here? We could sustain losses like this without "bailouts" to sink us further into the red. Bush is short sighted and bullheaded. Kind of like the guys running the Big 3. There is a part of me that says let them all go under and disappear. Just like the likes of Bush will be purged the Big 3 probably should too.

We should invite Mercedes to build an American people's car based on the concept vehicle shown in Paris called the ConceptFASCINATION. This would be a fairly large vehicle powered by a 201 hp turbodiesel of only 2,2L displacement.

Chuck37 I noticed you bring up the VQ engine in just about every post. I like the VQ just as much as anyone. Had one. But mention it so much??

We don't need no VQ engines. We don't need internal combustion engines period.

Electric cars and a green energy grid or bust.

good to say about Bush? oh please, I almost threw up in my mouth when I read that. Bush never ever should have been president, you're beyond ignorant if you don't see that

BimmerMike46,

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Clinton laid the groundwork for all the bullsh*t we're seeing now.

Bush & his cronies did nothing to fix it. They just milked it for what it was worth.

Bush did 3 good things in his presidency:

1) Opposed affirmative action (face it, its racist)
2) No new gun laws and no renewable of assault rifle ban
3) Loan to automakers

aside from that... well.... need I even talk about his presidency?

Clinton was a great president. If Al Gore had been our president the past 8 years none of this B.S. would be happening. You can take that to the bank.

This might be one of the few issues I agree more with Bush and less with Obama. I have the feeling Obama owes some people in the auto industry.

dude, Bush was in charge when the worst terrorist attack in history happened. And he was warned about it before hand. Only completely ignorant republicans who live in their own reality would brag about it that.

"DinamoR" have you ever considered the fact you may be blind towards your own ignorance at the hands of the liberal media? While I admit Bush hasn't been the best president, I still tend to come to his defense because I realize hollywood & the media's power to alter popular opinion about him to an all time low.

Also keep in mind that while Bush has had the lowest approval ratings since they started conducting the study, he's also had the highest ratings & was re-elected into office...To me that doesn't sound like the track record of a guy who shouldn't have been in office in the first place.

I think everyones going to be slightly disappointed when Obama enters office & doesn't produce the massive change everyones expecting.

#1 Bush is the worst president in history

#2 right wing media like rush and fox noise channel are the 'brainwashers'. that is very clear now.

#3 if Obama stood on one leg for 4 years and did nothing else he'd be a HUGE improvement

Munichob said "I think everyones going to be slightly disappointed when Obama enters office & doesn't produce the massive change everyones expecting."

Well that goes without saying. He is not going to step into office, wave a magic wand and change things instantaneously. It will take some time to undo years of irresponsibility by both democrats and republicans in congress. I think his critics are just waiting to tear him down when he is 6 months into his presidency and the DJI has not jumped 600 points. Rush Limbaugh has even blamed this recession on him...calling it Obama's recession, and the man hasn't even taken office.

Amazing how we all blame the line workers who go to work and fasten part A to Part B in a 20 Second time limit and lift heavy parts all day long.

How about poor management and Engineering?

OK, I have a question. What would be the long term benefit of bailing out the US automakers? To be profitable they will have to reduce their labor force substantially anyway, they are losing money therefor not paying much in income tax to the government (instead they will be taking from it), there has been a substantial reduction of demand for new cars so the market is shrinking anyway and it seems unfair to bail them out when Nissan, Toyota and Honda employs Americans and probably gets a lot of their supplies from the same vendors. People who owned stock in GM should have known better. Buy stock in Toyota or Nissan. You say that is bad to buy foreign stock but what is the difference? I lost a lot in the stock market but I was not crying about it because that is the risk you take. Finally, the union workers saw this coming for what, a decade? Haven't they heard of upgrading skills? If there is a demand for the cars they will sale, if not they wont. Why invest government money in private companies that sale products that no one wants?

Come on guys, look at the big picture for once. We've got give credit to whom it's due. Bush did the responsible thing and that was to save jobs, families, homes and help keep our economy going. Trust me, the greedy execs from GM, Ford and Chrysler got it coming. Furthermore, I think Obama is seeing and hearing for himself how great a president Bush really is. Let's hope and pray that Obamas eyes are opening. A wise man will hear and increase in learning(Proverbs 1:5

I hardly ever agree with Bush but after listening to his speech I think he has struck just the right balance and solution for this mess. The auto manufacturers have until March to straighten things out. Although Bush is giving them money it sounds like it has tuff conditions with it. I just hope Obama doesn't make things too easy for them which will encourage them to continue the status quo. Listen for yourself.

Yes let's hope it is not like the rest of that money which was simply given away... then used on nice fat bonuses ---> http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28337800/ Again I do think US car companies are well on the road to turning things around. The current execs have not been there that long (I think Wagonner is coming up on 4yrs.. and I agree with Lutz ... would be dumb to fire him now). One last note: Gota love the Clinton bashers... 100 yrs from now... Clinton set it all in motion.. that is why the Sun exploded!! Aliens invaded! Men are no longer required! Whatever it is... Clinton did it!
